My dad had a stroke 2 years back and, among many other things, it's been a good reminder that disasters can befall us any time.

I know that I should have all my passwords and bank account numbers somewhere my loved ones can get to them if needed. But I am hesitant to just leave a sealed envelope around 'in case of emergency'.

I wonder, is there a way to, for example, have an email go out if I don't log in for a week/month/whatever?

Or some other high tech solution to how to send out the keys to the kingdom when needed but not leave them lying around?

TBH I wouldn't do that though. A safe deposit box at the bank will be way more secure, putting everything in an email is just begging for identity theft and/or accidentally missing a login and having all your stuff broadcast to the world.

Sounds like a bad idea to me, if someone hacks your account or something happens that stops you logging in but it's not a disaster that makes you want to send out the bomb or God forbid just some tech issue.

Someone I know had their account hacked and it was a nightmare, I can only imagine it'd be a worse nightmare if they found a draft email with all those details.

I have a password manager on my home PC. It means my wife only has to have a single password - if I pop my clogs, she can easily get access to anything relevant digitally.

For things like bank accounts and such you could likely set something up with a legal firm under your will and such. You can also set such things up to also give power of attorney in case of things like mental disability etc...

Such things can be very good to setup, esp as you get much older, since it can streamline certain processes if they have to happen. Which means they can happen faster and more smoothly.

For things like your email passwords and such a safe deposit box linked to a will or other legal framework would be good. If you were really worried about theft you could encrypt the content in the safe deposit box with the key in the legal documents so that they are always kept separate.

Emails that get sent out automatically when X happens can work, but I think they are better as short term solutions to issues rather than long term. The last thing you want is to end up without internet for a week and suddenly your super-email is pinging your loved ones with all your personal details and such. Which might not seem like it could happen now, but in a few years you could be on holiday in some remote region having a great time and then you get back from your big holiday to find that email went out because you forgot that you didn't log in for a week.
