Hi. I am playing my friend who plays Tau shortly and he is a little confused over the new codex Tau Drone Rules (we dont play that much and he isnt sure over the new rules).

I have a few questions to try cover it all and help us both in our coming game-

1- In the old Codex Rules, you had to roll a dice to see if you could 'take a hit' on a drone didnt you?

2- In the new codex, do you just nominate a drone and take the hit (based on the drones stats), without rolls to see if you can take it on the drone?

3- Can drones still deplo next to a unit it comes with (lets say a broadside) and they leave the BS and go elsewhere?

4- Can drones take hits for units they are not 'attached' to...say if they are next to a commander by chance (but didnt actually come with the commander datasheet).

Thanks for any info for clearing it up for us. I did get some help on FB but I think some replies got deleted for some reason.

1 I think they did, but if you are playing with the current Tau rules, then it does not matter.

2) You allocate the wound as normal, if your tau player allocates the wound to a drone, then the drone takes any available save etc.

3) I do not see any rules saying that drones can leave and go elsewhere. They seem to be fully within the unit that added them.

4) Yes, but I think only with the "SAVIOUR PROTOCOLS" Stratagem.

Thanks for that. Very helpful

Just an add-on to point 3, Drones can leave the unit they're attached to, but only with the Designated Tasking stratagem.

Just had one thought-

When does this happen. Lets say my Falcon opens fire on a Riptide with shield drones....everything targets the Riptide (Shuriken cannon/brightlance and pulse laser). If everything hits...if 2 drones available, do you declare then which of the 2 hits you are going to roll on the drones? Is it just 2....surely you cant just nominate the drone each attack and keep rolling till drone is dead?

Thanks again

1) you said "everything targets the Riptide" it should read everything targets the Riptide's unit.

2)When does this happen? (in response to me saying "You allocate the wound as normal").

It happens at the normal time for allocating wounds. At the "Allocate Attack" step (#3) in the making attacks sequence.

In the case of "Lets say my Falcon opens fire on a Riptide with shield drones"

The player with the Falcon would make a "hit roll" for one shot at the designated target with a weapon that the Falcon has declared as shooting (As per step 1 in the "Making attacks sequence")

Then, if that attack hits, you make a "Wound roll", but only if that attack was a hit. (As per step 2 in the "Making attacks sequence")

Then if that attack successfully wounds, the opponent allocates that attack to a model in the unit. (As per step 3 in the "Making attacks sequence")

But now that I re-read your post, it seems like you were trying to fast roll several different weapons on the Falcon, and that is not technically allowed per the RAW so that can not happen.

To clarify, for units which are a mix of drones and not-drones like a Riptide with shield drones the Riptide’s toughness is used (drone toughness is ignored for units with a mix of drones and not-drones). After wound rolls, attacks are allocated to the unit as normal (presumably to the drones in the unit rather than the riptide) and then saving throws are made as normal.

And per the normal rules for allocating wounds from an attack, once you allocate the first wound to a Drone you must continue to allocate all wounds from that unit's attacks to the Drone until you either run out of wounds or the Drone dies.

So start with your lesser attacks in hopes that you kill the Drone before the high damage ones get allocated to it.
