Warhammer 40,000 have seen a lot of vehicles come and go over the years. Some have left a strong impression on me and remain in my mind, even after models and rules have gone OOP. Today I'm honoring the memory of one such model, the Ork Gobsmasha.

I think the Epic-version was the first, but could be wrong. 40k didn't have to wait long for the Epicast/Armorcast-model though. The one pictured was painted by Dakka-poster Gitsplitta.

The Gobsmasha started it's life as a battlewagon-conversion and in WD136 we where given an inspiring article on how to scratch-build one of our own: https://www.belloflostsouls.net/2020/04/warhammer-40k-retro-challenge-build-your-own-gobsmasha.html

To stay true to the origins of this lovely old Ork tank I feel that my own Gobsmasha will have to be a scratch-build too...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Having never scratch-built an Ork tank before I will be building two. One to try things out on and a second, hopefully better looking, one as the main event. I started by drawing some rough sketches and making cardboard cut-outs to use a templates.

As you can see my style is a little different from the originals. A bit taller and with smaller wheels.

So here are the pieces so far. The hull is plasticard upgraded with mostly battlewagon bitz. The wheels are Lego tractor tires with hubcaps from a 1/35 Tamiya panther tank. I went with a battle cannon as main armament but skipped the plasma sponsons. I'm hoping I'll learn enough from this first build to make the second one more detailed and true tor the original.

Next step will be painting.

Looks like you're off to a good start there, chief, with plenty of rivets on the hull.

Are there any other old Epic vehicles you might want to remake?

Looks like a fun project. The original gun looks more like a Sturm-tiger-ish rocket launcher than a battlecannon, yours look more realistic while still being clear 40k

Primed grey all of the imperfections, scratches and building errors really show. There is also a bit of "visual inconsistency" between the highly detailed GW-parts and the scratchbuilt and very flat armour-panels.

I was about to go even further with the rivets actually but held back a little! And yes, plenty of things on the remake-list. Lots of Ork things of course, like the Bowelburna. Will have to learn more about how to make rounded shapes before I tackle that one. The Capitol Imperialis is an old favorite and it will also be interesting to see if they've managed to capture the feeling of the old Land Raider in the upcoming HH Proteus-kit. Otherwise I might have to salvage an old one or make one myself.

Yeah, the Battlewagon comes with a battlecannon so it seemed the obvious choice. Might be a little too small I think? The gun mantlet was also a real struggle, still not pleased with my compromise in the form a "bellows". Something that will probably change with the final version. I think a round "ball-manlet" like on the Sturmtiger might look more orky. I'm terrible at making round things out of platicard though.

Nicely done. You've really hit that balance between comical and dangerous. Reminds me of the hetzer tank destroyer, but with monster truck tires. It might be too late, but with a bigger gun you could run it as a kannonwagon. As for domes and circles, you might want to rummage around your garbage bin. I find that much easier. Maybe some plastic Easter eggs from the dollar store?

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

It's a beautiful tank, but it looks like an imperial tank. To clean for an Ork tank.

I think it looks fantastic. The armour panels can be given a lot of interest with battle damage, rust, streaking etc. Or you could add glyphs and additional bolted on armour to up the "ork" feel.

For a ball mount, I would find something already ball-like, and add detailing elements to that, instead of trying to build a ball from plasticcard, which sounds impossible.

Capitol imperialis is a lofty future goal, looking forwards to the other builds, the bowelburna is a fun looking vehicle.

I went with red (Vallejo Blood Red Spray), would probably have been a better idea to undercoat it white or black to getter a nicer base red.

Thak you! I will be building a second one with the lessons learned. I will definitely look around for some plastic shapes, cheap knick knack is a great tip!

Have at it! There aren't that many Gobsmashas out there when you google for images so I encourage everone to have a go.

Jehan-reznor wrote:It's a beautiful tank, but it looks like an imperial tank. To clean for an Ork tank.

It does look a bit to symmetric and "normal". You where thinking it should look more like this?

I like that look and might go for something like that for the final build. It does create a little conflict with the ambition of honoring the orginal though, the old Ork vehicles aren't nearly as scrappy as newer models.

The old stuff is great to dive into when there is nothing new out that grabs your attention.

I'm not a great painter so I will go for a very basic paint job for the first one. I will do some experimenting on scrap plastic to see I'm ready for anything fancy.

You don't have to go overboard with the slap on stuff, even the old ork vehicles in the past looked slapped together, and not as clean and neatly as your tank.

It must have been made by mechanicus slaves and not a mekboy

It looks great

This is a brilliant project. I would compromise simply by adding a little extra to some of the panels. You don't need to do the whole lot but by adding even a couple of mm to some of the panels will break up the lines and make it look a little more haphazard.

A made a quick mock-up of a more orky armour panel. Building the hull with similar panels could be a way to improve the overall look.

Point taken. I was seeing something similar in the disconnect between the highly detailed battlecannon and the plane armour.

This is a great idea! Making everything a little off-set will probably do wonders. I'm already working on the second hull while finishing the first model.

I love the old ORK vehicles and there’s a guy who recreates (not recasts) the old armour cast ones. They are ace. I made a data sheet up for my gobsmasha I got of him. Here it is. It needs an update to current codex and format. Keep making those old ORK tanks, you have enviable plasticard skills.

I would say don’t go too heavy on the slap dash junk nailed together look, the old vehicles were actually very well put together. The scrap piles is very much a 3rd edition on kind of look.

I have started to experiment with some colors and seem to have an unintentional christmas-theme going. Not to pleased actually, the only thing that works is the yellow-red-black-part of the gun barell!

Meanwhile I'm starting to put together the second hull. These are the pieces for the "frame" all layed out. Once this is assembled I'll build the tank around it by adding all the details as a second layer.

I have been trying some other paint schemes. The one on the left was a sort of ww1 german camouflage attempt that didn't turn out so well. The one on the right is more of a bright GW-style perhaps more appropiate for a tribute to an old epic tank.

Great to see a fellow enthusiast is keeping to the old orky ways! Haven't thought about rules yet but I might follow your example and make up my own data sheet.

I never got round to sharing the final Gobsmasha build but here it is finally. The main weapon is a bit if of a departure from the original but I'm pleased with the overal look. I think it captures the old Gobsmasha wibe without looking to out of place in a modern Ork army.

Awesome. Looks great mate! Good job.
I remember when I was a kid, an older guy at my club built one for me, since I played orks. He just gave it to me, along with a hair brush bonebreaker. Wish I still had those models.
Looking forward to seeing what you do next

The tractor tires are an interesting choice, you might want to see what they look like with the ork tank tracks (forget which kit) on them instead...

Thanks guys! I was watching a lot of Nightshift videos during the build: https://www.youtube.com/@NightShiftScaleModels I think he's a great inspiration even though he doesn't build 40k models.

I honestly think I could build 4 or 5 more of these and not get bored. So much stuff you could do differently!

It's also not a very difficult build, very straight forward. I encourage everyone to give it a go, write here if you want to try it and don't know where to start!

Nicely built! The good thing about orks and their vehicles is that anything goes. If you were to build 4 or 5 more I'd be happy to see your progress.

Was this the second Gobsmasha you were talking about building, Ohman? Or did you completely repaint (and rearm) the red one, as I don't think you ever posted final shots of that one.

The yellow one is the second one. Never really finished the first red one, it was more of a prototype. I did steal the axles from it to use with the new one but I might see about painting it up and finishing it somehow.

Edit: I did find some pictures of it in it's current state!

People on CMON seem to prefer the red one even though I think the yellow one is far superior:
