Hi,

TLDR: How are people building their tactical squad sergeants and why?

I am tentatively dipping a toe in to the Horus Heresy, to see how things go I’ve bought a single box of the MKVI Legion Tactical Squad and the Legion Astartes book.

I am intending to do Imperial Fists, probably only 1,000 points, and I am wondering how to go about building my Sergeants.

As it’s a small army list I am thinking two 10 man squads and just giving the sergeants bolters. What about in larger games? Power fists, plasma pistols?

I appreciate it’s hard with so many variables but any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you got the points, the big brain play is to give him power fist, and artificer armor. That way he can still stand in a challenge

Are there any non-unwieldy CC weapons that are ap2 you have to worry about for the artificer armor?

Legantine Axs on Ultramarine ICs and Invictus Suzerians. Great Frost Blades on Space Wolves ICs.


Mostly its all stuff youd encounter on independent characters if you're trying to lock them in a slog. But dont forget Power Swords and Lightning Claws have Rending, Night Lords have Breaching on all of their special Weapons.

As mentioned outside of legion specific items no, you are pretty much crit fishing with Power Swords.

To many unpainted models to count.

I am going the slow but tough routine with my Iron Hands:

- Artificer Armour
- Power Fist (or Thunder Hammer if this is an option as I have a few still unused in my 40K bitz box)
- Melta bomb

However I won´t equip him with a plasma pistol. A chaos champion from my 40K Legion of the Damned army (only 1W) had the habit of killing himself with plasma on multiple occasions. Sometimes dice hate particular models...

Bearing in mind I've not played heresy before so this is theoryhammer...

I'm planning on fielding some of my tactical squads as 10 man with no upgrades, but I'm considering a minor combi-weapon grenade launcher on the sergeant. At 5 points it keeps the squad cheap, has the same range as the rest of the units weapons and isn't one-shot and is a cheap way of getting a little extra firepower and the possibility of pinning.

I'm also considering some 20 man units with chain bayonnets, vexilla and a more tooled up sergeant (probably power fist and artificer armour as Backspacehacker suggested).

I'm doing Raven Guard, so each of mine gets Artificer Armor, a Melta Bomb, and Raven’s Talon.
