Ancient Venerable Dark Angels Dreadnought

Completely new to HH, and just have starter set, a rhino and a pack of special weapons. I’m down to choosing between DA and BA but torn on which way to go. Was leaning BA just for a variety of painting for me (already have 3 black space marine armies) but also love the lore of the DA.
With the starter set in mind, plus possibly adding a leviathan and sicaran, which of the 2 would work better with these minis?
I’m not super excited about buying a ton of resin models, so not sure if this changes much.

You could play both and ally them together?

They'll both work fine for the starter set. Although with DA they're more all-round and less melee focussed so the large amount of tacticals will play right out of the box to the DAs,you could even look at playing the storm of war rite and going all in on the infantry heavy aspect

I think it depends what your choice of play style is also a factor to think about. A melee leviathan would fit in nicely with a BA army, but a long ranged, artillery leviathan would work nicely with DA.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Always boils down to what you want to paint. Another factor is the current lack of assault marines so you would be stuck to rely on tacticals with your Blood Angels.

Lack of assault and despoiler squads have been a deal breaker for me as far as collecting Blood Angels is concerned.

Which one do you like painting? Red with black, blue, yellow, gold, and green? Or Black with red, green, silver, and gold?

The Blood Angels are great in close combat. They prefer to charge and get a bonus when rolling to wound when they charge. Their motif is finely detailed armor and weapons. The Sanguinary Guard would be awesome models with a head swap since they wouldn't be wearing Deathmasks until after their primarch dies at the end of the Siege of Terra.

The Dark Angels are amazing generalists but aren't masters at it. They can be bolter shooty and get +1 to hit, can be HTH oriented and get +1 to hit (swords only), can be resilient and get modifiers vs volkite, flamers, melta, and plasma, vehicle oriented getting +1 to hit vehicles, can have bonuses to movement, or +1 to hit characters or key tanks. They can act like other legions but those other legions can do it better. You just need to mix and match to make your force better. Their look is robes and swords. Their characters can get terranic great swords which is arguably the best hth weapon. You can buy the 40k vet squad which has various weapons, robes, heads and swords.
