Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

UK

Welcome all to the 91st round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month, the theme is 'That's not a gun... THIS is a gun': Cannon to rocket launcher, catapult to orbital bombardment, sometimes bigger guns are just better. Your entry should feature miniatures bringing maximum firepower to the tabletop.

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of Sebptember and will end at midnight BST on 30th September. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Going to try to get all these guys done, choose who looks best. Autarch with a reaper launcher (and/or fusion gun) 2 deathwatch frag cannons, and a pair of scouts, one with a HB, the other a sniper rifle bigger then he is.

Pretty impressive pile of guns.

Now I have to decide... some SM Devastators, an Ork cannon thingy, a Mars Alpha Leman Russ, or an SM Vindicator.
Or something else, if I get struck by inspiration between now and the weekend!

Man, I got nuthin' for this round.

The best I can do is an OOP Commissar converted with a hellgun but that's hardly a "That's not a gun... THIS is a gun!" contender...

To be fair, the quote would still work if the gun is gold plated.

Golden Walther PPK is just as impressive as a desert eagle in .50AE to me anyway

We don’t gun shame here.

It’s all relative anyway. On a guardsman scale, a hellgun is pretty impressive. It’s not level cities in one volley impressive, and if we are lucky, we might get something on that scale this month. But still better then what the rank and file get.

The topic is a guideline to inspire, not a straightjacket.

I'm still game. Dual wielding assault rifles is definitely in line with the gun theme.

Some combination of these loud noise enthusiasts:

L-R: second generation Obliterator; the first Havoc to hand when I wondered whether you could dual-wield heavy bolters (and then stuck another on his backpack for good measure); a first generation Obliterator; a Terminator with heavy flamer and v1 Cyclone launcher; and a Havoc who's too haughty to carry his/her/their own weapons and turned one of the Dark Acolyte's minions into a mobile missile platform so they could rain death on the enemy hands-free. So that's six miniatures in total (I assume it still counts as two even if they're on the same base), if I do finish painting all of them I'll just ditch one from the contest lineup. (Probably one of the Obliterators - let's be honest they look awful, I got them just for nostalgia and to have the 'history' lineup alongside the modern ones, and I haven't even got a great idea for how I'm going to paint them yet.)

This is the biggest gun I could find:

The Jotunn Heavy Weapon Platform. It's too big for Deadzone, but gets an entry in the Forge Fathers list for Firefight.

Now showing more Samurai Marines, Bad Squiddo Amazons, and an Oldhammer Chaos Thug!

Painting total as of 3/28/2024: 21 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

@Daia - I love the guy toting 3 heavy bolters

Can you find a servo-skull somewhere with the wee bolt-pistol mouth? That would be the perfect finale

Blister packs yearn to be free! I’ve got a bunch of old ones in my PoS, been a while since I cracked one open.

I feel both sides there, got a couple havocs and some warmaster blisters like that. Its cool packaging and they aren't making more, but they're cool models and I'd like to paint them up...

That said, going to try to do up a a fire support lance for battletech:

Firgure assault mechs with lots of large lasers and ACs probably count.

Thanks! Sadly no - I don't think I've got any servo-skulls come to think of it. The third heavy bolter was kind of a fluke, I'd intended to do just the two, but when I was looking through my bits box for random parts to add a bit of decoration I noticed it (it's been sitting around all this time since I decided to go with the multi-melta on the 3rd edition box's Land Speeder) and thought, actually...

 SirDonlad wrote:

I haven't yet - may not this month, since I've already got five minis, but eventually yeah. I get the nostalgia feels from it, but I'm more of an opener than collect-in-package (apart from the Tara action figure signed by Amber Benson, obviously. And the other one she signed. And the other one, and the other one), and ultimately I want that 'Obliterators throughout the ages' lineup on my shelf. I'll do it carefully though, and save the blister pack afterwards.

A Protoss colony world

Redemptor Dreadnoughts carry big guns, so that'll be my entry for this month. I'll be painting it up in Space Wolves markings. Proof:

It's the Easy to Build model that was around a few years back; I took advantage of that model's lack of a rocket pod on top to add the Wulfen Dreadnought top piece from the SW Venerable Dread kit. I put a couple of other little decorative bits from that kit on as well just to give the otherwise fairly bland model some character. I'll have to accomplish the rest with paint and decals. Good luck to all in this month's challenge; it's a cool theme so let's get painting!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

This should come as no surprise to anyone who’s been playing along at home; my entry will be the snipa boy from the new Octarius Kommandos kit. I figure he’s a good fit for the theme given that his gun is longer than he is tall and you have to either kick up his front foot on a bit of scenery or let the barrel hang over the edge of the base to keep it from dragging on the ground. At one point I was saving all the blister backers I had. Chucked them out a couple moves back.

Blister packs are great hobby assets. I feel sorry for people these days who don’t have a stockpile of old ones.

When I clip and build squads I line up 5 blisters and cut 5 at a time and make sure all the parts are separate, kept that way with everyone in their own blister. This way I can make sure extra bits and the like are spread evenly across the squad. When it comes time to remove mold lines, I dump the pile of parts onto the workbench, and once clean put them back in the blister. Sure, I could use a set of little bowls, but these were free with purchase for a long lime.

I use them to mix paints, and hold drops of water to thin paints. I used to use them to mix flock paste and hold loose flock to swish bases through (but actually bought better options)

I’ve cut up those foam backers to try a sponge camo technique. I have one I soak when working with decals to get them off their backers. I use them when I need to pack minis in larger compartments of my case. Before I got my KR, they were almost ALL I used when transporting minis. Plastic/cardboard card boxes, everything separated by backer foam.

I was considering giving this month a miss and painting up more of my Warhammer Quest project... but I think I'm actually going to have a go at painting my fire dragon wraithlord as it has a really long fusion gun/lance thingy. Might paint up a melta marine to contrast gun sizes, or maybe some actual fire dragons. We'll see.

I got a little paint on the Commissar...

I tried to paint him like the original 'eavy Metal scheme from an old WD, but replacing the red with purple, as that's his Inquisitor's accent color.

For reference, here are two other models from the same retinue:

Commissar Copplestone won't look as garish when he's in the finished squad.

Right, hear me out here.. I'm an idiot. My health sucks and I've had a project on my desk waiting to be painted. A 3d printed, 10 inch tall Master chief.. And it's all ready to go even though I stand no chance in Hell of getting it fully weathered and done.. Well he has a big gun right? About as big as a dreadnought last time I saw one of those. Might be the biggest gun on the table.

Oh did you miss the 6mm dwarf with the massive axe? Yea.. you did. He's tiny! Well he's the dwarf of shame. I refuse to not submit anything this month. If I can't finish Chief I will paint that dwarf. He is the dwarf of shame, a 10 minute paint job of disgrace for failing to submit a model. May he stay unpainted.. but I'd bet on him..
