Hello DakkaDakka-ers

So as many of you may recall, last November GW issued a community survey with a range of questions. Since that time, I've been (a) really curious about the results and (b) wanting to ask even more questions, particularly in regards to older editions. The timing of issuing a community-made survey seems apt given the rumors about a 10th edition in the not so distant future. Closer to home (here on DakkaDakka) we've had a lot of discussions about older editions as well, and this might be a nice way to collect some quantifiable data.

The survey uses google forms can be accessed at the link below.

Warhammer 40K Community X-Edition Survey

Please feel free to share elsewhere (social media, reddits, etc). I plan to leave the survey running till the end of September(ish) and then share all of the result summaries and raw data for anyone who wants to check it out.

If you see any typos, glaring omissions, or other issues I'll try to fix that ASAP (so long as it won't break the response collection).

Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words! Typos and formatting aside - I do occasionally get called upon to write survey questions for my job. It was fun making this one as I had a much easier time getting into the head of a potential respondent and figuring out what they might want to respond to

Filled in, with one caveat, in the rules section I should have ticked "did not play an edition with these rules" but I did play OTHER non-40k (some GW) games with similar rules and based my answers on them. Also you spelled Black Templars wrong I think.
Good survey though, interested in seeing the results.

Thanks all for your responses so far!! I've posted it around Reddit in few spots as well and on Twitter (though I don't have many followers in the 40K community there).

So far I have about 70 responses (which is good considering the length and depth of the survey).

Would be nice to get about 200 responses in total before the end of September. If I could get closer to 1,000 (tall order) we could actually run some statistical tests. So if anyone has friends/groups that play, please share a link if they might be interested. If anyone has any connections with 40K influencers or bigger websites, if you could ping them it would be super helpful for spreading the word.

Thanks!!

We're cranking along. ~170 responses now.

DakkaDakka was about 70% of the responses earlier today. I posted it on r/competitivewarhammer and it now it's like 66% Reddit responses.

The survey is well done as a whole, I put some minor suggestions for improving it inside.

I'd actually would love seeing an edition mocked up from what is most popular.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Filled out and shared it in my group. Made me realize that despite its flaws overall I like 9th edition.
I would have liked a differentiation between Codex rules and unit options, I think it's one bullet point in your survey. And while the first is okay in 9th the latter is terrible and a problem that never occured before on that scale (I know Orks, IG and De keep losing stuff since 5th edition but since 8th everyone starts to suffer.)

your clearly interested in the gaming side of things,

but for future surveys (?) it would be interesting to dig out some info on people who only collect/paint/enjoy the background, novels etc and have either stopped playing or never played but are still involved in Warhammer the IP

It's a lucrative market for GW over and above active players and they want to cater to them too, and anything you suggest to them based on your survey findings will have more impact if your considering them too

Sure sure could've asked more questions about the hobby side of things. This was definitely a gameplay focused survey. Although there was a bit in there about narratives, painting, non-matched style missions etc.

The written comments are really interesting as well. Going to take a while to assess all of those.

Ah, one thing I noticed is that you didn't distinguish painting from modelling. Especially in the long painting related threads here on dakka many people voice that they enjoy one or the other, and see the other part as necessary evil.

Nearing 300 responses so far, but it's definitely slowing down (as expected).

I'm starting to think about how to process the data and what interesting intersectional analyses might be worth looking into.

I will say I did a quick look at people that said they got to the survey from dakkadakka versus Reddit (where most of the responses seemed to be after I posted to r/warhammercompetitive). It's interesting looking at the histograms "how competitive" and "how narrative" driven are you between the two groups. Dakkadakka is, unsurprisingly, clearly more aligned with narrative while reddit leans much heavier towards the competitive side. But we already knew that!

One line of investigation I wanted to do was to look how people's mechanical rule likes/dislikes are influenced by whether or not they played earlier additions in any significant capacity.

I pulled a sample of the data set when it had 256 responses. There are 50 people who have played 9th edition but didn't play 1st - 7th edition at all. So are their responses much different than people who have played across many editions?

One of my processing tasks (looking for group thoughts here) is to combine the respondents in a few different nested cohorts based on the range of editions they've played.

For instances:

"Old Timers" - people who played 1st or 2nd edition

"Early Classic Players" - those who played some combination of 3rd-5th edition moderately

"Dark Age Players" - those who played some combination of 6th-7th edition moderately

"Renaissance Players" - those who played 8th/9th moderately.

Some of these could then be combined further. We could identify the "long haulers" that have a played games across every era. There could be the "Revivalists" who played in the early classic period (3rd-5th) but skipped the dark ages (6th-7th) and came back into the game for 8th/9th (this is a fairly frequent pattern by the way). Probably a few other ways to categorize it as well.

But these cohorts could be used alongside the level of competitiveness vs. narrative-interest to assess the kinds of mechanical rules people like or don't like.

One of the more arduous tasks will be splitting out the data for any of the multiple-check box responses, since the way google collects it puts all the checks into a single cell. I need to write a little formula to recode the responses into their own columns for each edition (won't be too bad). I also need to go through the summary tables and convert most of the responses to a %-percentage basis of affirmative responses. Lots more people report playing newer editions than older ones, so it skews the charts when you look at it from an absolute value standpoint.

completed, enjoyed. would have liked to see more about the hobby/painting side of things mixed in. would be interesting to see how many people care if an army is painted and to what degree of enjoyment that brings. personally i prefer seeing two fully painted armies and loathe fighting a field of grey.

Also would be interesting to have a few questions on 3d printing how often peopel see models used that are 3d printed or if they will refuse to play/ recent them not using official GW
