If I hit a Word Bearer Obliterator with a lascannon, is his controlling player allowed to wait to see what the damage is or does it have to be played right after a failed save?

Would help if you posted the text of the strat.

Looking at it, it's when an attack is ALLOCATED to a model, which happens after the wound roll, but before damage is dealt, if I recall correctly.

Clocks for the clockmaker! Cogs for the cog throne!

As above, it is when the attack is allocated which is before random damage rolls are made.
