I'm trying to lean into an alien allies theme with my Tau army. The GW vespid models just don't sing to me. Any suggestions for good third-party options or possibly good starting points for a kitbash? Plenty of things have wings, but not as many things also look like they could arm wrestle a marine and come in a variety of poses. Note that I'm open to non-insectoid "vespid." I could see a squad of bat/dragon/jetpack guys working just fine.

I'm also looking for alternatives to breachers. I like the GW models just fine, but they behave so differently from the tau norm (wanting to get in close) that they seem like a good place to squeeze in yet another alien species.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Quick WiP of my Vespid stand-ins

Used the standard Breacher set and the Rotor Packs from Puppetswar

https://puppetswar.eu/rotor-wing-packs.html

Model was built as standard with an extra pauldron to bulk them out a bit. The helmet is a standard Fire Warrior one shaved smooth and painted with Alclads. The cork base is to give them a bit of extra height.

They look great! Unfortunately, I'm looking for something a bit more alien (read: non-tau) in appearance.

I’m planning to pick up a squad for Vespid standins and general skirmish work.

Wargames Exclusive has a range of not Tau models in their greater good line.

One Page Rules has two ranges that might interest you. Eternal Dynasty is a much more Japanese spin on Tau and their Jackals range is a different take on Kroot, some of whom have mechanical wings as a stand in for vespid kinda sorta. These are all available as STLs straight from OPR or as models via Only-games.co.

If you're looking to do some kitbashing, I always liked the idea of Gue'la humans as breachers. Give the humans the shotguns and send them into the fray. Some imperial guard bodies with the pulse blaster arms would be a simple conversion.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

I've had the same thought. It's a good idea, but I'm weirdly reluctant to buy the necessary box of guardsmen. It's a solid suggestion though. Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions. I think those jackals might end up winning for my choice of breachers.

I knew had seen some not-Vespids somewhere, but I couldn't find them earlier. They're from Heresy Lab and a little pricey IMO. Look good though.

My son and I are planning on adding some dragon/lizard types to our tau army to bring some flavor. We're going to be using these for Vespids.

We've also picked up "Starfinder Deep Cuts: Dragonkin (90502)" as possibly being his battlesuit commander.
