I must confess that I am having one hell of a time making a choice. There are just too many things that I enjoy about the lore of the Horus Heresy.

I love the characters that are "loyalist" traitors. Marines like Barabas Dantioch, Nathanial Garro, Ehrlen (What a bad ass), Tarvitz and Torgaddon, Loken of course. There are so many, and they have so much in the way of interesting stories and personalities. I would very much like to do a loyalist traitor army, but while I know that competitive play isn't what I want, I also know I need to keep it in mind because losing every game due to having trash rules will get old fast.

I just keep having trouble committing. As I said above, Barabas Dantioch and Ehrlen are two of my favorite characters. In addition, I adore the armor colors for both of those legions. But then I look at their model lines and realize that especially for the WE, they're models are quite old and they don't really look so good. Especially the CC gladiators. They don't have any nice praetor characters either.

How did you all choose your legion?

For me it was mostly about aestethics, as I'm not sure I will play much.
I guess that doesn't apply to you, but I think if you don't like your legions aestethics painting becomes tedious and play is probably not as fun either.
My choice therefore went to Thousand Sons as I liked the metallic red/gold/white scheme the painting video from GW showed.
I also wanted to convert the special units from plastics instead of buying FW models and came up with easy ways to do that using the 40K models as a base.
A second point was background and I like the tragic background of the TS. They basically got screwed over by both sides and since I don't use special characters, I can play both loyalists as well as traitors.

Dark Angels came a close second because I have liked their aestethics since I actually played 40K, back when models usually came in metal.

I just stuck with the same Legion I've been playing for 20 years: Night Lords. They've always fitted me like a glove, and I've never had a desire to play anything else, besides my R&H, which I'm hoping to also bring back out for HH, using the Cults and Militia rules (whenever we get them), or possibly the SA rules (Penal Legion? Feral?).

I chose the 1st Legion. Because the lure of committing frequent and unequaled war crimes is just too powerful.

When I first delved into 30k I often tossed up between doing a Luna Wolves army or Death Guard as I too like loyalist traitors and both the Legions paint schemes. In the end the 1st Legion won out because it meant I could double dip in my Bitz Box as i've been collecting Dark Angels for many years.

I picked mechanicum because I loved the aesthetic of the 30k mechanicum with the darker feel and tone, plus they can be loyalist or traitor.

I picked white scars because noone played them at the time 😂 really enjoyed their books and lore once I looked into it so I ended up with many thousands of points worth now

Sons of Horus because I love all the old school artwork of the more brutal late heresy marines

I went for the Emperor's Children so our group could play out the Isstvan III campaign but only one other player got enough stuff to make it worthwhile.
I moved onto the Iron Warriors because they were my first CSM army and I wanted to recycle some assets. Most of the army is actually recycled models or rescues.

Sorry, it was a pretty involved selection process for me. I tried to make it a brief as possible, but it isn't.

I went through all the legions and created a list of legions I absolutely wasn't going to choose. The list of legions I wasn't going to play were:

Dark Angels (I actually had a small 30k/Fallen I got rid of and didn't want to go back)
Emperor's Children (not a fan of any would be Chaos god legion)
Iron Warriors (I like infantry, not tanks and artillery)
White Scars (I'm not painting white)
Imperial Fists (I'm not painting yellow)
Night Lords (not a draw for me, already spoken for)
Iron Hands (not a dreadnought guy, would prefer not to paint black)
World Eaters (see Emperor's Children)
Death Guard (see Emperor's Children, already spoken for twice)
Thousand Sons (see Emperor's Children, already spoken for)
Word Bearers (already spoken for by host and spearhead to HH being a thing in area)
Salamanders (I have a lot of contempt for the flamer as a weapon)

That left me a pretty short list of legions to whittle down: Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Ultramarines, Sons of Horus, Raven Guard and Alpha Legion. And right there, that made it much simpler. I took the little Horus Heresy quiz on the GW site to see if this would help me any. My result often came down on Space Wolves or Blood Angels. But really thinking about it, I wasn't likely to customize/kit bash my models nearly enough for either. Plus, our group has players that seemed to like both a lot more than myself, and I didn't want to go with something I knew was spoken for if I could. Though, I really did want to paint the red of Blood Angels. Since most of my war gaming armies (not just 40k) are in drab, earthy colors. I wanted to paint something with a vibrant scheme at a big war game level.

The Alpha Legion were knocked off because, even in HH, they sounded like they wanted non-marine stuff in their army. And I am a strictly all marine kind of player. Plus, not much of a fan of their color schemes, any of them.

With the Ultramarines, it was close for me. I think they get a bad rap from way too many people that weren't even around when Matt Ward was with GW. And even the ones that were, should probably let that particular grudge fade, given how long ago it was. I also tend to be more of a generalist type player not favoring any one thing in particular save maybe leaning on infantry and melee a little bit more than the middle, but not overly so. At the same time, I couldn't shake the idea that I was just wanting to pick the Ultramarines for the lulz. A very expensive lulz. What took them off the list was our resident 40k Ultramarines player was also starting a HH army (and then they moved away). So, I actually may have gone Ultramarines if I was starting today.

With Raven Guard it largely came down to deep strike/reserves and not being super thrilled about painting black. Pluse, the fact there isn't 30k plastic Assault Marines. And I am not interested in trying kitbashing something. I don't want to wait for maybe-soon(TM).

Leaving Sons of Horus. Which should have been an automatic pick as I am a dyed-in-the-wool Black Legion player. Certainly, there isn't anything I have read about SoH rules that I didn't like as a play style. I was mostly resistant in that I wanted my HH to be something different from my 40k marines (Black Legion and Primaris) ones. That, and I'm not super keen on the seafoam green of their armor. What pushed it over was the current Codex: Chaos Space Marines. And, despite the dead horse it is, doesn't have rules that feel like the Black Legion I want to play. So, it was really down to the color of SoH (and I wasn't going to paint Luna Wolves--no white), which ultimately I decided wasn't a dealbreaker.

Now, I have about 1500pts painted up and might get my first game in this weekend. I think it was the right call. The seafoam green has grown on me. While I still don't like it. I tolerate it more and more. However, the big issue my HH group has is practically the only players that stuck to it and/or didn't move away are the traitor legions. So we have a huge imbalance of traitor armies now. So if I was just starting now, I would reconsider Blood Angels and Ultramarines. But Sons of Horus is doesn't feel like a wrong pick in any event.

For the reboot, I chose the Sons of Horus, which seems a popular choice. I've been thinking about doing an early days Black Legion army for a while, and so already had started getting bits towards it, so a Siege of Terra SoH army was an easy move to make. I also like the idea of a legion that isn't just an earlier incarnation of an existing chapter or the remnants of one, they no longer exist in the 40k setting and are a part of its history that has gone (I am a firm adherent to the notion that the black legion are not the Sons of Horus painted black, but a mixture of all renegades and outcasts lead by a former SoH.)

Doesn't hurt that the range is fantastic, either.

I wanted to have a brightly coloured army.
That would be IF, TS or BA.
TS would have been my first choice, but somebody else in our gaming group laid claim to them first. Same with BA. That left the IF.
They are bright enough to no being overseen and do quite well in battles so far.

Started 2.0 with a friend. In 40k, he played Khorne, in Sigmar he plays Khorne, in ever game imaginable he plays the bloody barbarian trope. So naturally when 2.0 dropped I was going to pick the opposite of him.

Out of no where he claimed dibs on white scars... I was shocked! My months of research and lore building for the perfect Imperial Fist army was now wasted and I needed to pivot to something else.

First time across all 30k/40k lore that I've dabbled in a Traitor faction, and I've settled on Iron Warriors since they could most easily port some of the tactics I envisioned for the Imperial Fists army I originally planned.

Months later, my parking lot of vehicles and terminators are collecting dust waiting for more Mk 3 marines to come in stock... I need 3 boxes of Mk 3's and they are NEVER in stock, so my legion is destitute...

I chose Dark Angels because they were the first Legion I picked up right when their codex came out, Angels of Death. It was tough for me to choose a Legion but I really liked their lore and their "Fallen" aspects. That was back in 1996ish so 26 years later, I'm still fighting for the Lion. For a while, I used my HH era marines as Fallen. If I was to choose a second Legion, it would be the Space Wolves or the Ultramarines if I went the Loyalist route. The SW look fun because of their hunter and stalker squads and their versatility. The UM have lots of cool Boarding Marines and I like the thought of them (3 different units to choose from). If I had to choose a traitor, I would either go Night Lords or Emperor's Children. I'd probably need to see Despoiler Squads and Assault Marines before I committed though. I like the thought of forcing multiple pin checks, multiple times with modifiers and fighting in the dark. We play a lot of ZM and limit 1 contemptor per army and no leviathans. Just to keep the games fun and small.

At the beginning of 3rd edition 40k I had a lot of CSM not painted, because I couldn't settle for a theme. Then in an In Nomine Imperatoris article in the WD, IW got the option to field a Basilisk. And because I like heavy gun, I started IW and stayed with them all the way to the Heresy. Sadly the Basilisk is a joke now in the newest edition of 30k. :( But I think, I will still field it in a few games.

I jumped into WH30k with the release of the boxed set. I realised that I had never really enjoyed 9th Edition, and wanted to return to the system that I'd spent the most time with. I also really like the look of the HH-era vehicles.

I was initially going to focus on Dark Angels. This was mostly because (1) there are plenty of WH40k kits to pillage for appropriate bits, (2) I like their knightly theme, (3) I thought they would be relatively easy to paint, and (4) they seemed to have decent rules for fielding a vehicle-heavy list. But, having collected quite a few bits (including a pile of pauldrons from ebay), I threw all of that out the window (not literally) and went for Ultramarines. In the end, I just like painting blue. I also felt that a bunch of mostly black vehicles would look kind of dull, and realised that the Dark Angels' rules are overly complex. The Ultramarines' rules are a bit underwhelming, but I'll live with that. I've decided to fully embrace the Roman legion theme, so it it will be crests, leather straps and laurel wreaths all the way.

Before plunging into the Ultras (and while I'm waiting for GW to release some Mk VI Assault Marines), I did a few test models to help get into HH mode. I usually convert Ork models, so it was a bit of an adjustment. I bought a box of Mk III models, and enjoyed building them so much that the supposed test models have ended up as several units of Sons of Horus Marines. Inevitably, this all took on a life of its own, and I am now I also have a Predator and 2 dreadnoughts, and am converting a Shadowsword into a Sons of Horus vehicle.

Go for the feel, lore and aesthetics. Most of us spend ten times more hours modeling and painting than playing so you better enjoy that aspect. It definitely helps to enjoy their play style because excitement for the game is a big motivation to paint. But any legion can play in a variety of styles so there is tons of room to build the type of army you like.

I picked White Scars because they have always been my favorite for over 25 years. (I’ve always loved the Mongols and their mobile warfare.) I like their independence, and their focus on mobility and scouting but they also love to get in and go toe to toe. The colors look great (white and red is so bold) and the mix of Asian aesthetics gives them a TON of design space (from nomad to samurai) compared to most Legions, which have more narrow or similar looks. The only problem is painting pure white but I’m finding techniques to speed it up a bit.

Also i like tanks and being 2" more away sounds like fun. Also i have more than enough units and models to be useable as SA / R&H which also fits AL theme.

Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"

GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"

started with Thousand Sons, because I love the candy red you can get with airbrushes.. and the BoP set was good (got two of them)

more recently local club started playing, airbrush not set up so can't easily expand thus started again, Death Guard as I have them in 40k so why not, plus I like the colour (my 40k ones are a very pale green not the darker green usually seen)

tempted to have them reasonably clean looking with just a bit of weathering too

My choice was Sons of Horus.

My main 40k army is Black Legion. When they first came out, Justaerin Terminators were extremely cool compared to with their 40k descendants. Something about the continuity appeals to me.

Rules wise, SoH has been up and down over the years. At the times I can get games in with other players, they tend to be worth it regardless of the outcome.

I decided on Alpha Legion, mostly because of the memes, but a lot of it due to the fragmented chronicles of the legion from its creation. Also, the colour scheme is absolutely beautiful and offers so much potential for Customisation and making each figure unique - which is keeping in with the manipulation mind games they play...

Also the fact that they essentially told Horus to go feth himself and do their own sneaky stuff was both ballsy and hilarious.

I love the IW and their tactics/ some of the older fluff and Peraturbo to me is a tragic backstory (somewhat ruined by more recent fluff, but he still has a very justifiable gripe against the Imperium his legion helped build and suffered and struggled more than many other legions whilst largely being shoved aside)

Also I adore the Ironfire approach the IW do.

Word Bearers ever since I read Mcragges Honour and also soaked in every part of their lore from the HH books and the such (The First Heretic)

Something appeals to me about a Legion who worshipped the Emperor as a god but got backhanded for their faith so chose new gods who unlike other legions (Who fell accidentally into worship, be it through hardship, greed, etc) fell so willingly into the worship or gods who give back be it in a fickle often malicious way.but the Word Bearers relish so uttely in the violence and misery they cause that it has a certain... je nais ce qua.

Their characters are cool as well Lorgar the quiet yet self assured Primarch who kinda shrugs when things go wrong, Erebus who is the asskissing/trecherous half of the duo with Kor Phaeron who doats on Lorgar as the proud father yet does not know that Lorgar cannot give two gaks about him ... Zardu Layak the turncoat who outed Lorgar's plot to assassinate and replace the warmaster..And then the tragic figure of Argal Tal the first of the annointed ones the dark brethren..

So my project actually started when Betrayal at Calth came out and expanded when the Age of Darkness set dropped... I have a couple of thousand points of Word Bearers painted .. waiting on having enough funds to expand further.
