How do!

Got this on Saturday and been making some excellent headway. All the Titans defeated, 4 or 5 Gyms beaten, and just 2 Star Bases to go.

Just hit the point where you need to work at it though, so a few evenings hard graft lie ahead. Thankfully the game is keen to reward random exploration, and I’m finding better and better items just…lying around on the floor. Have also sussed out some areas where they’re much easier to come by.

This is the first Pokémon game I’ve played since Yellow, not counting Pokémon Go, so I’m not coming from fond memories of predecessor games, in turn my opinion of it is probably higher than those more familiar with the series. My only criticisms are having the game crash out twice so far. Not sure if I’m just overplaying and the cart is overheating, or if it’s purely software, and the world map being crap.

The Pokémon battles I’m largely enjoying. I’m starting to get a real handle on Types and strategies, but am not gonna be bothering anything like the Pro Circuit in this lifetime. But as I mentioned above, having hit the “now you need to work for it” stage, it’s gonna get tougher.

I do have some new favourites though. However, listing them might be spoilers for those who haven’t had the chance to pick it up.

Cleared 4 gyms, 2 Stars and 3 titans. Really enjoying it overall.

I played the OG Red when it released and was fairly involved in a lot of the early competitive discussions but kind of burned out in the gen 4 era when it was clear the online community had kind of made their own game of it and Gamefreak had a ways to go in terms of competitive design.

Jumped back on with Gen 6 but while the core game was fun I didn't feel like investing the time to keep up with the remakes of Gen 3 and then got bored with Moon's excessive tutorial. Didn't pick up Sword for a long while until my daughter got super into the Sun & Moon anime.

Sword's competitive scene was actually kind of engaging though, even if the game was pretty meh. Arceus was a huge breath of fresh air though and Scarlet/Violet is a really excellent merging of what that game did well and the far more engaging battle mechanics of the mainline series. The open world itself is also a huge step up from Arceus and is just a lot more interesting than the incredibly linear design of Gen 8. For the first time in maybe ever I'm engaged in the game itself and not seeing it as a tutorial for the multiplayer. Looking forward to wrapping it up and seeing if I can get back in to the competitive play.

I’m really enjoying the Let’s Go! Feature, where you let your Pokémon rampage around, like a Chav letting his dog off the lead in a Deer Park.

Doesn’t net you quite as much XP as a proper stand up fight, but it’s way, way quicker.

No idea if that featured elsewhere though.

There have been variations of your lead Pokemon following behind you and Legends Arcueus had you throw a Pokemon out as part of the animation to pick up crafting resources, but the implementation here is more or less completely new. It's pretty solid but really annoying that you have to walk slower to keep from outpacing your Let's Go Pokemon and having it return to the ball. Keeps me from using it as much as I should.

Definitely a function you need to use in the right place. I’m currently denuding nature in an area close to a town, where Level 40 Ghost Type are spawning. Getting some decent level ups out that!

Casting my mind back to Yellow, this is an improvement. I remember largely walking the Gym battles, until one where you need strong Pokémon of a type which would only have got it’s head kicked in from the previous Gym types. Boy that was a grind!

Cleared the 3 main arcs. Really enjoyed the structure, though there's some oddities in how things are dispersed, and I would have much preferred a system that scaled with your badges. Moving on to the endgame content and just all and all very impressed. Huge huge step up from Gen 8. I'm plotting team builds for multiplayer for the first time since.... 2009?

Beat the game proper last night. They really went all out for the finale. Really one of the most ambitious endings for a Pokemon game with a very challenging final boss (followed by another fight that cheats you the win as is often the case with modern JRPGs).

Still, this is the point where I've put down the last 3 Gens but I'm still hyped to keep playing. Looks like there's a quick postgame wrapup to be had, some cool Pokemon to catch and I think I'm going to actually raise some competitive teams. Looks like almost all the grinding has been removed outside of Tera types.

They've really done a fantastic job removing the grind on raising a team. My one gripe is EVs are still a nightmare to fix if you've done them wrong, but IV and nature are a breeze now. Even egg moves have essentially been fixed pretty cleanly. Very easy to just catch something and raise it "right". Going to start working on a few teams next.

I’m a bit late to the party on this one. Really enjoying this game. I’m 3 titans in, 2 star and 4 gyms. I feel like the most fun is finding the random strong Pokémon in the wild. Like with my team in solid level 30 I found a level 50 Jolteon. It was quite the challenge to catch that one! Havn’t played Pokémon since the days of gameboy color, so that would be gen one. My biggest complain is that many of the Pokémon designs leave a lot to be desired. My biggest praise is just how fun it is to explore and find new Pokémon.

Edit: I’ve never really played Pokémon online before. I’m playing in offline mode mostly. What’s the online community like? Is playing online fun?

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

The coop online feature is pretty vapid. You just kind of both exist in the world together doing your own thing more as ghosts than anything with real interaction. Definitely not a driving feature for most people, but its been perfect to play with my daughter as it doesn't stop either player from doing what they want or progressing through the game.

The online raid battles for the endgame are pretty entertaining. They can get very challengingin the 6 star levels and you won't always get capable teammates, but they're fun and very rewarding.

Online battling is very good this time around. The big downside is the arena isn't nearly as cool as Sword and Shield, but in terms of getting a competitive team, its really never been easier with remarkably easy access to maxed stats and swapping moves and other features. The VGC community and 2v2 battles are a little more competitively healthy than the Smogon crown, IMO but I've had an overall posittive experience with both.
