I'm a big fan of squigs.
I really fell in love with them while assembling beast snagga squighog riders. I got myself the goblin squig herd to add to my riders.
After assembling the new ork helicopters, I noticed more squigs on their base decoration:
Bee-like squigs and turtle squigs. This really got me thinking:
What types of squigs exist?
What are their purpose in ork society?

I will keep this in 40k context, any additional info from AoS or WFB is appreciated.
The small regular squigs seem to be used as a quick delivery for explosives, the bomb squig in rule terms.
The Squighogs are used as cavalry, as well as their bigger cousin the Squigosaur. Interestingly, the later has two legs, the former have four.
Even bigger Squigs are used for pulling carts.
The Squigbuggy uses smaller squigs as ammunition.

So, what other creatures have you found? Is their some black library novel with a paragraph about squigs?

Squigs were originally Orks who had been 'modified' by Tyranids, then it was changed so they're part of the Ork Ecosystem - along with Fungus, Snotlings, Gretchin/Grots and Orks themselves.

Lexicanum has a list of Squig Breeds.

Don't forget that orcs are naturally hairless. The only hair they have - hairsquigs!

Types of squigs are probably created by the waaaaagh energy, based on the needs of the war and in their current environment

There is basically a squig for any situation.

Oiler Squigs, face eater Squigs, syringe Squigs, hair Squigs, buzzer Squigs…. You think of a job there’s a squig for it.

Originally Squigs were just weird creatures that existed wherever ORKS did. They were food and tools and anything. None were big enough to ride or like they are now and they looked like anything.

With later additions to the tyranid fluff towards back end of RT they were fluffed into a tyranid construct but that was dropped. They used to be amazing little models that looked crazy like the old familiars that are coming back but did nothing but add character in game.

This is all I could rustle up on Squigs from the three great books of ORK lore.

It's worth noting that 'squig' is short for "squiggly beast", so, in effect, any squirmy critters found around orks will be considered squigs. So 'different types of squigs' is kind of like saying 'different types of animals'--it's a broad category!*

It's unclear if orks only consider 'squiggly beasts' that are part of the orkish gene-structure squigs. I don't know if they settle on a planet and find some native animal and bestow a squig moniker on it, or if they 'know' squigs are part of the orkish ecosystem, or if, being as squigs ARE part of the orkish ecosystem, they tend to get named as squigs because they are always around anyway, to the orkish mind.

Goffs have a bull's head as a totem, and don't seem to refer to it as a 'bull squig' or a 'angry horned squig' or anything. They may have adopted the totem after encountering Terran-derived bulls. Or it may be that in Gothic, whatever the orks call that totem, is translated as 'bull'. Same with Snakebites. Are their 'snakes' long, limbless venomous squigs that Imperial biologians call snakes, or did they take a liking to some Terran-derived snakes? Who knows? I am sure there aren't any ork linguists around to think about it--as they would be clobbered for being unorky!

Though, presumably, orks would not consider completely immobile life forms, like trees, squigs, as they aren't squiggly. Corals and other sessile animals may or may not be 'squiggly' enough to be considered squigs either. This is probably a blindingly obvious distinction to orks and bewildering to Imperial xenolinguists.

Thanks for the replies! I hope to see some more of the squigs shown in the image provided by Andykp realized in models over the next years.

By the way, thank you, this was lovely little thread. I got to read all sorts about Squigs I hadn’t in ages and no one fell out.
