My friend and I are interested in Open play. We don't yet have the rules, but we noticed in the command roster list builder that there are some pretty absurd restrictions and requirements. Notably, I am interested in playing Deathwatch, there are five vets in the kit, but a requirement of 6 are suggested by the list builder. Is this only for matched play? This seems intentional to force new players to buy more than one box to field 6 veterans. But, since we're only interested in open play, can we skip that requirement?

You can always use any house rules you want
yet, the Kill Teams for the regular forces are meant for players coming from 40k who already have a collection and don't need to buy new stuff
for beginners or those who want to start with KT it is better to use one of the starter boxes that comes with 2 teams and rules

Yeah, we were hoping to just use the models we have. I have a five man DW team already, painted and ready to go. But I didn't want to have to buy another box for just 1 model.

Interesting, the Command Roster is telling me it is six. I wonder what takes precedence.

The latest balance dataslate added an additional warrior to all SM teams except Scouts & Tacticals.

To clarify the situation:
- most Compendium teams (ie. regular 40k dudes not specifically designed for KT) were easy to set up with 1-2 boxes worth of stuff. Basically all power armour teams had five men.
- this made it very hard for them to compete.
- GW released a balance patch that gave most power armour teams a sixth operative, which is apparently included in the app as it should be.

For open play, anything goes as long as all players agree on it. 5 DWs can still cope quite well as long as they have decent wargear, although you might want to give some sort of "advantage" to them, if going against a horde team

The Command Roster is updated past the Compendium.
Look for the Downloads and FAQs from the WarCom site.
