Can anybody recommend any online videos that show you how to paint vehicles. I’m looking to do some crisis protocol cars and don’t know where to start really. I like the idea of airbrushing them since it’d give a nice even finish and give me an excuse to finally use the airbrush for something apart from undercoating. But I want to try and get some highlights on the body work and have no idea how to get a good effect when working with such large smooth planes. All the tricks and techniques for painting figures don’t seem so much use. I’d be grateful for any advice or leads

I don’t have any to share as such, but youtube has loads of videos for vehicles, both for wargaming and scale modelling. Just search for airbrushing model cars and you should get plenty. Specific techniques to look for include preshading, post shading, panel lining, black basing.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Scale modelling videos are a great place for this stuff. Most of what scale modellers do is around weathering, chipping, filtering etc - there's very little highlighting. Those techniques really shine on large vehicle panels, and aren't as often shown off in wargaming-focused content..

Night Shift on youtube is an excellent one.

Thanks both. Very useful. Just looked at Night Shift's videos quickly and his dioramas are amazing. And it's incredible the effect that he gets on his figures just by using a zenith highlight to get the shadows followed by some light glazing to give the colours.

There's a lot of variation in how to approach it. A good basic starting point is to create just a small amount of colour/brightness modulation using the airbrush that you build on afterwards with weathering dirt into the crevices, drybrushing or edge highlight the edges, using filters and whatnot.

You can build some colour modulation into the primer and spray over it with your main colour so it becomes more subtle. Either painting gradients with the primer or maybe mottling on large flat areas to create some visual interest.
