Hey everyone,

The topic says it all. I painted my RG boys in corvus Black, red Shoulder rim and now... well... i cant decide on a base scheme.

I would go for an urban theme, but i really dont see black wirh grey(ish) bases as a nice thing to look at... any tips on which theme would fir the RG as well? Desert? Grass?

Thanks!

So your base color is black, which goes with everything.

It’s dark, so you probably want something light to offset that.

Red is classically paired with green on the color wheel.

I might try a light grassland.

Alternatively, google pics of how other people have done thier army and see if any of them look really cool (and within your skill set)

It just requires some imagination. If you want to do urban, this is stil do able. Just make the greys lighter, and add some complimentary tonal variation with green mossy slime, streaks or powders.

Instead of grey rubble, maybe a pale sandstone or white marble? Still with the green accents.

The RG could be bringing the fight to a Tau or Eldar city. These are often shown as being brighter, and not just grey concrete. And better then the Imperium for incorporating greenspace.

I've gone for snow on dark earth, grey rocks and dead-ish looking grass tufts, but that's because I'm basing all my armies in the same way in order to create a snow environment for them to fight on (I started that base scheme for my eldar). I do like the contrast between white snow and black armour, though. Plus, I like the idea of hulking black clad troops somehow sneaking unseen across snowy tundra. It's silly, but somehow in-lore.

I've also gone for red rims for my boys in black.

Thanks for the input guys!

Most RG i found online were with grey bases, which didnt really "pop".

While I am still here, quick question...
Would you shade the RG Armor (corvus black) with anything or is that "without effect" anyway cause black?

If not which shade? Dont wanna try and botch to be honest 😂

Thanks!

Take what I say with a grain of salt, I just paint at a basic table-top level

Personally I do black armor as abadon black with grey highlights. I think mechanicus std grey. This is not the best practice.
Spoiler:

Advice from my HS art teacher many years ago: “reserve pure white and pure black for extreme points; once you go there, you can’t go further.” You shouldn’t have your base color be a pure black/white. Go with a very deep, or a pale grey depending on if you want the whole model to read black/white. This way you still have room to shade/highlight.

If I were painting mine with corvus black, I'd definitely want to shade with very thinned down abaddon black (to wash consistency, basically) as corvus is actually quite a step up in terms of lightness. I however prime in chaos black and then base coat in abaddon before doing two or three highlight stages of varying lightness of grey, so shading is pointless for me. I've seen people shade with a dark brown (rhinox, I think) around lower joints (lower legs, ankles, maybe knee pads) as it helps put them in the right setting, with grime, dirt, etc, but this is actually very slightly lightening, rather than it being a traditional shade. I don't know how well that would work over corvus, though, as I've never done it myself.

So basically shade the whole model with watered down abbadon black? (Nuln oil a possiblity as well?)

Or only the recesses / joints etc?

I really dont wanna mess them up now xD

You could possibly give the whole armour a wash of nuln and then recess shade with abaddon black, I've never actually tried that, but I don't see why it wouldn't work over corvus. I'm not sure nuln oil is dark enough on its own to properly shade corvus, though.
