Hi guys, I'm building a 8th/9th edition fantasy army and I have a few questions due to my specific mini choices.

Would you happen to know of any place where I could get one of these square base sizes? 20x40, 20x60, 20x80 or 20x100. I'd like to make some of those old school gravestone rows to bulk up the zombie/skeleton ranks with some easily removable proxies.

Secondly, I got my zombies from Mantic Games, they look awesome, but the way they attach to the base is a bit awkward. The minis come with a circular base that slots into a hole in the base. I would like to make the bases fancy. With some tombstones, still water and stuff, but I'm not sure what order to approach it with. Should I paint the mini itself first and then do the base after that's done, or build the base, glue everything and paint it all together in one go? I'll attach some photos below, so that you can see what I mean.

Finally, I'll be using some Vallejo Mud Textured. Do those need to be primed before I put paint on them?

https://www.renedra.co.uk/product-category/gaming-bases/ has some of the base sizes you want, but they are a bit thinner than the ones from mantic in your picture.

Oh, sorry I forgot to mention it in the original post. I did see these and some MDF ones, but I'm not a fan of MDF for basing and these are indeed quite thin. I would probably go for the Renedra one's if that's the only option, but I would rather find something that is more in line with the rest of the army.

I'm ordinarily not a fan of MDF, but once I added the green stuff to match my basing I had no complaints:

MDF is relatively inexpensive and companies like Litko can make custom bases for as big or as small as you need.
I wouldn't immediately dismiss it as an option.

If you want to get fancy with the Mantic bases, you can flip them over and do your sculpting on the flat side, cut the disks off the minis' feet, and then attach them to the bases.

Now showing more Samurai Marines, Bad Squiddo Amazons, and an Oldhammer Chaos Thug!

As folks have said Renedra makes various bases that are 20mm deep by multiples of 20mm long. You could easily bring them up to height by gluing two together. Rendedra says their bases are 1.5mm thick and I think Mantic are the same as the classic 3mm of GW though you may want to measure to make sure.

I think a line of gravestones is a great idea. I did a line of pavieses to bulk up my archer units, (nice to only have to paint 30 instead of 40) though I individually based each one. Not sure why I did that since it was for Kings of War which doesn't have figure removal, but I digress...

For the figures themselves, I'd go ahead and glue the round base into the 20mm square, then paint the figure and then do ballast and decorative basing afterwards. Will give you more to hold onto while you paint as those round integral bases are extremely small. Also folks usually wait til after painting to add basing materials anyway.

Best of luck with the project!

Thank you guys for all the responses.

I... did not think of gluing 2 Rendra's together.x) That is actually a really good solution! I found a handful of 20x100 at a really good price on Ebay, I'll give that a go. See how it works out.

I will also see how they worked flipped over. I will probably have to experiment with it, and make a few test one. I would like to make a flooded graveyard themed bases. So I would either have to build around the feet or lower them in, as I would like to get the effect of the units trudging through the mud.

Wargame Bases looks good, but I'm in the EU. Exporting this kind of stuff doesn't really make much sense financially.^^'

As for MDF, I would just like to avoid using too many different materials, keep it simple. I would go for it if needed, but I'll see how the other solutions go first.
