Hi all.

The newest wacky plan is to get Battletech Alpha Strike and see if I can get some play by e-mail action on with Graphite.

That means new stuffs, and the painting thereof. So Why not make a plog to go with it

The normal Battletech Beginner Box turned up at the end of last week, so banged some paint on the two IS mechs that come with it for test schemes in advance of anticipated birthday bundle.

The choice was between just using normal simple contrast techniques, or if slap-chopping my way through would give materially better results. I did rather jump the gun as I am noticing mould lines that I really should have dealt with. Promise the next tranche will be properly prepared

The slap-chop gives interesting results, and the Battletech universe is nothing if not full of grimy grimness and recycled battered stuff, however I quite like the idea of having a force of well-maintained, or at least freshly painted, mechs. So I think in the end I'll keep with cleaner schemes.

IS mechs will be some mixture of parade ground teal and camo. Clan mechs will get variants on a winter scheme I used on some 10mm scale mechs I printed up for use in Horizon wars (I know the Bushwacker is IS, I was just on a nostalgia trip when I printed it and wasn't expecting to get back to B'tech itself).

play by email?

Trying to leverage the map play aspect. If we both have the same stuff, then we each have a board in the house with it all set out and can message moves and dice results back and forth. it’s too hard to do with free-move games, but with hex maps it’s no different to chess, which has been layer remotely for hundreds of years

Final logistics are not set out yet, so it may be some form of IM or messaging app rather than email, but the principle is the same. Or maybe we run the worlds most boring Dakka thread so people can join us on the journey

Nice looking mechs, particularly the madcat (thunderwolf? I used to know both the IS/clan names for all the onmimechs)

How are the rules these days? I dropped out after they switched to the click system, both from a lore/game PoV, but played a LOT up into the clan invasion.

Timber Wolf, but will always be the Madcat to me

For the base game, the beginner rules are looking very familiar from when I last played about 20 years ago. As I understand it from the main battletech thread, the normal rules are basically unchanged since forever.

The Alpha Strike rules streamline it all down to allow company level engagements, but my rulebook hasn’t turned up yet. The unit cards show a combined set of armour pips, and the same for structure, so a potato person HP system rather than individual location hit points.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The Battlenook(registration pending) is prepared

It was to be my hobby desk, but I’ve colonised part of the playroom for that function, so this think has just been hosting a random pile of gubbinz recently. Should fit 2 map sheets next to each other in either orientation. It can also be left set up for an extended period without interference from child or dog

Just waiting for the next supply drop with the rest of the stuff.

Finally finished the basing on my first two mechs. The Vindicator and Griffin from the new Beginners Box set. Eagerly awaiting Alpha strike amd various Lance packs to do some more.

I was aiming for an autumnal grassland vibe on the base but I think I hit more swamp like. Oh well. Looks good enough for me

I'm just getting back into BT myself, so it's especially interesting to see how others are approaching their 'mechs. I like your teal/red scheme.

Now showing more Samurai Marines, Bad Squiddo Amazons, and an Oldhammer Chaos Thug!

It does indeed. I’ve also signed Graphite up for it, and have started playing the Battletech turn based pc game as well. And this is after not playing g the game for about 20 years

There's an awful lot of mecha goodness going round at the minute! Love the turquoise!

Add a couple of fallen leaves and it'll autumn it right up.

How would that work at the scale? Anything the size of a leaf should just be colored flock on a mech base.

Ignore me if you are just talking about mixed color scatter.

I hadn't even considered that how big is battletech stuff meant to be?

They could just be really big leaves..

I forget the official scale, and it might have changed. There should be a full sized person in a cockpit piloting the thing from the head. Epic scale, more or less.

I think battletech is about 6mm scale.

The leaf litter I have is more for 28mm scale, but after a bit of mortar and pestling, managed to grind something a bit smaller

Yeah, I think the effect works well. If you look closely the bits still look a bit big, but at arms length it just looks like piles of dead leaves.

Probably need to practice a bit in grinding them up as I had to pick a few bits off that were still way too big. Good start though. Looking forward to getting some more mechs at the end of the week to get going properly.

Don't go for individual dead leaves but rather of plant matter. It'll look great that way.

What are you getting next?

I have the command, battle and heavy battle lances. Largely to pick up the warhammer, bushwacker and archer the other mechs in the pack are less important. Oh wait, there is a rifleman in there somewhere as well

Thanks Cap’n

My next supply drop hit today with 3 Lance packs. Unfortunately I forgot about the content of the starter set when ordering lances, so a certain amount of duplication has occurred, especially with the battle Lance pack…

For the IS mechs I think this tallies up to 2 assault, 8 heavies, 7 mediums and 5 lights. Noice!

Starter set:
Archer 70t
Atlas 100t
Blackjack 45t jj
Fire Moth 20t clan
Locust 20t
Nova 50t jj clan
Phoenix Hawk 45t jj
Pouncer 40t jj clan
Timber Wolf 75t clan
Warhammer 70t
Warhawk 85t clan
Wasp 20t jj
Wraith 55t jj

Beginners box:
Vindicator 45t jj
Griffin 55t jj

Command pack:
Marauder 75t
Archer 70t
Valkyrie 30t jj
Stinger 20t jj

Battle pack:
Warhammer 70t
Rifleman 60t
Phoenix hawk 45t jj
Wasp 20t jj

Heavy battle pack:
Axeman 65t jj
Bushwacker 55t
Cataphract 70t jj
Night star 95t

Now to arrange them into notional lances for painting purposes.

That's a lot of 'mechs. What do you think of the Clan models/rules? I got out of BT before the Invasion stuff was released, and I'm not really familiar with later eras.

Neither my rulebook nor my starter set have arrived yet, so I don’t know really. My main involvement with the setting is the Mechwarrior computer games, so to me the clan stuff was always just swishier looking, especially in the old days with the wacky and extremely hit or miss metal minis from RAL Partha.

All I know that I love me a madcat! Vultures are pretty iconic as well. I’m Definately more in it for the aesthetics rather than anything else

Also for this particular exercise, Graphite already has the clan side dibbed, hence the splurging on IS kit. I’ll probably pick up some clan stuff in due course to see if that can entice my son to play as well.

Deadly, half weight missile racks, and 50% extra damage on most weapons turns IS mechs into death traps. Sadly for the Clans vehicle swarms are great equalizers.

Back in the day we were still playing during the initial clan invasion. They were a bit har to balance. I have no clue if there are points/rules to equalize things now.

What we did was use the clan system of bidding for the honor of leading the conquest. Set the tonnage of the IS force. Then both sides would bid down how many tons of clan mechs they would use to fight it. Low bid got to select mechs equal/under that limit and start the fight.

It was one way to balance the asymmetric power levels. You didn’t want to let the other guy get it easy, but not bid away so much of an advantage you just got stuffed.

Canon, battlemechs are between six and sixteen meters tall - call it twenty to fifty feet in American.

Unfortunately the box set Archer is dead on arrival, so I’m not unpacking until I’ve sorted what happens next with the vendor

However the Lance packs are all cleaned up and cycling through the priming bench

Also printed up a Kintaro. Tried printing a pair of catapults, but the torsos failed. So no I have a pair of perfectly serviceable legs, and some scatter terrain
