Hi all,
After randomly finishing a couple of my stepsons’ Warhammer figures over the Christmas period I bought a couple more figures because I enjoyed painting his up so much! I finished up a dragon and a vampire and then painted this werewolf my partner bought me. I found this one difficult as, unlike the Warhammer figures, there were no colour schemes online to provide guidance for painting but I think I did ok for a beginner in the end!
I understand I am new to the hobby but would really like some thoughts and input from other painters ….
Here he is

I'm in no position to give anyone tips/tricks/information on painting, but I will point out the things you have done well in my eyes.
#1 - It looks like you have a good eye for drybrushing for being new to painting. This one took me a bit to get, but once i did, i use the technique alot on a variety of things, it's well done imho.
#2 - You seem to have a decent eye for color ranges/schemes/match's (i'm unsure of the word for it lol), the base sticks out to me (i haaate painting bases lol), i think it's very well done.
#3 - Your shading works well for my tastes, and i enjoy the shading on fur/skin both.
Keep it up, your heading in the right direction, i just picked up a brush after a year + off, so it's great to see other people picking up a brush as well
Cheers

Hi Urbanevil,
Thankyou for the response, I really appreciate the feedback! I used to build model planes and such when I was in my early teens but haven’t used a brush for anything other than glossing the odd skirting board since those times…haha!
I have really been enjoying doing these little models though and have actually bought a ‘Start Collecting Flesheater Courts’ box… just building all the little ghouls now (super fiddly process)
Anyway, I was just kind of winging it with this werewolf. He started off brown but I just couldn’t get it to work and over a week or so I added more and more greys into the fur until eventually I accepted it was the better look.
By far the most challenging part were the legs! They had no texture at all for drybrushing so I ended up having to paint the fur effect on strand by strand! Man they looked a mess for some time before I got them to a point I think they pass for genuinely hairy.
Anyway, like I said, really appreciate the feedback. Thankyou

That looks cracking - I second the comment about the base being very nicely done. The effort you put into the legs really pays off, too. Great work!

I think if you have the patience to paint individual hairs on fur where there's no pre-existing texture, and get it looking that good, then you're going to do very well on future projects.
Seems you already know to ignore the "that'll do" voice. Well done

Thanks … yeah that voice you mention reared it’s head many times. In fact, as soon as I look at the images I feel like I want to go back and improve a few things lol

One thing that stands out to me is the blood at the point where the weapons have been plunged into it, you've shown restraint in the palette used and coverage. Lots of people go overboard with blood effects and it can look very cartoony, not so here.

Thanks. Yeah I was trying to show restraint but it is a fun part …was fighting the urge to turn it into a splatterfest!!

Great work!
I didnt realise the legs lacked sculpted hair texture until you said you actually painted the effect from scratch -most impressive.
Overall the colour pallet works really well. The light greys give an unconscious feel of the pale moonlight one would expect to shine on a werewolf.
I would ecourage you to keep finding your own painting schemes on future projects instead of google the official GW paintjob.

Wow. Very kind comments and much appreciated! Knowing other people think what I’ve done so far is working it really spurs me on to get on with my current project (Flesheater Courts)
I actually have customised the scheme somewhat for them so far and I am happy with how they are coming along, I’ve yet to try even playing an actual game … but will try that too once my army is done!
Thanks again
