Could anyone recommend a generic combat patrol list based on firstborn marines only? I've been searching the net and other sites but everything seems to be geared towards primarius marines.

Sternguard, Devastators and Tacticals are all great right now, largely because they don't pay extra points for wargear at the moment. Sternguard in particular can be extremely efficient because of this, as you can give them all combi-weapons for free, as well as take two heavy weapons (Multimeltas or Grav Cannons are my recommendations).

Dreadnoughts are also good right now, as they're not too many points, and they have a nice ignore-a-point-of-damage mechanic.

By Combat Patrol you mean 500 points? Or just the organization chart? Here's a quick sketch of something I'd gravitate towards.

Captain, Powerfist, Combi-Melta
Tactical Squad (5), Grav Cannon, Sergeant with Combi-Plasma and Powerfist
Tactical Squad (5), Multimelta, Sergeant with Combi-Plasma and Powerfist
Sternguard (5), Grav Cannons (x2)
Sternguard (5), Multimeltas (x2)
Dreadnought, Twin Lascannon, Missile Launcher

Adjust for personal flavor or requirements. I kept the basic gun on the Sternguard because I play UM and I'd get to fire it twice at 24" on the move, and sometimes more bullets at long range is better output than higher powered shots. But also because I'm guessing it's a more casual affair and showing up with maxed out combi-weapons could look a bit rude.

There are as many ways to build a marine list as there are players. Besides combat patrol, what else you have in mind? Points or PL? What rule pack? Chapter? Play style? Favorite unit you want to include?

Insectum7: Thanks for the response! That's a nice frame to work with.

Nevelon: You bring up some good points ! Thinking about it, I'll probably just stick to playing 500pt combat patrol. Now I'll undoubtedly collect more units, etc as time goes but what I really like to do is build a force that will reflect the fluff I have for them which is :
Traitor Raven Guard from the heresy Era (The ash-blind of Euros) transported (lost in the warp etc) into the current 40k setting or....

A lost or renegade (blackshields) Ultramarine destroyers unit transported (lost in the warp etc) into the current 40k setting.

As you can probably tell, I really like the current 30k models. So basically, I'm trying to decide if I should use a vanilla list or possibly go with the RG or UM codexes.

I’m not sure the best way to translate destroyers into 40k. You can get gunslinger vanguard vets with duel pistols, but no real way to get the rad weapons.

If you want to get that 30k warped into 40k feel, look into units that let you splash in some of the old stuff. A squad of relic terminators might make for a core of that flavor. HH era dreads and vehicles also go a long way.

I’m not up on HH RG lore. I know the Ultras got a special destroyer unit for 30k that uses bolters. Sternguard would be a good 40k sub

I’d stick to general units at this point and not lean hard into chapter specific stuff. Not that UM have a huge number of units (OK, Ultras have a couple, but mostly just characters) But with the potential of 10th to drop this summer, you want to keep it flexible to bend with the winds of change.

Nevelon: Thanks for the response! I'll be perusing the codex here shortly to see what will cross over from 30 to 40k.

There's a chance that Deathwatch will have options more analagous to what you're looking for. They get some oddball wargear and can mix and match their squads in interesting ways, from what I recall.

Personally I'd still go generic Marines for the sake of stability, but Deathwatch is an option.

Which Chapter? Chapter Tactics are going to have a pretty large impact on Combat Patrol choices given how few points you have to take advantage of them. A Blood Angels combat patrol is going to look very different from an Imperial Fists combat patrol is going to look slightly different from an Ultramarines is going to look very different from Salamanders is going to look very different from a Dark Angels combat patrol is going to look very different from a Space Wolves.

How competitive? I mean The Sanguinor in a Combat Patrol is so competitive in that small of a game it might not be fair.
