I'm a big fan of KillTeam21, and have bought/split bought most of the campaign boxes released for the game. However, being a slow modeler and someone who struggles with painting due to eye injury, I have been postponing the actual building and painting of my teams. Until now. Figured I might as well start cracking while I wait for more beakie models to get released by GW for my 40K/30K army project, heck they are even going to release new Indomitus Terminators soon, which means even more waiting..

Ok, so I want to start my KillTeam builds with the Eldar Corsairs! As some of you might know, I'm a diehard Rogue Trader -era enthusiast, so obviously when we talk about Space Pirate Elves, you know what angle I'm trying to go for. I'll attach my inspiration picts below, these will be guiding my decisions along the way. I have two options for the colourscheme, either go all waspy like the army pic (yellow/black minimalism) or the classic RT "Pirate scheme" with the zebra stripes. But a defining feature I want to run with is the og style Eldari helmet with the "buck teeth" that go all the way down on the front and the beady eyes. It's such a cool sectoid-esque thing with strong 2000AD feeling mojo, equal parts of silly and sadistic looking. Alien.

I'm currently researching more Eldari lore to get my grip on the official Corsair stuff. I want to homebrew and make everything mesh with my own headcanon, but I also want to do it in a way which doesn't completely contradict the established GW lore (whatever that means when we talk about toy soldiers from an imaginary future). I want my Corsairs to feel more individualistic and ragtag, the models as they come in the kit feel too uniform for my sensibilities (Pirates don't have a "uniform", they are not military FFS). So the challenge will be, how to mix the bits up but still make the team look like a warband where everyone belongs together..

I completed the first five torso drafts. These Jes Goodwin designs seem to have some sort of global "logic" to them, which more or less applies throughout the entire plastic Eldari lineup. Arm sockets are almost always flush and heads are the ball joint type ones. Upper torsos might well end up being quite interchangable between similar looking leg poses, even across several different kits! I will need to get my hands on some more bitz to confirm this. I've deliberately left the upper torsos unglued on the builds where this is possible to do, on some poses/builds this is impossible because the legs directly connect to the upper torso though.

Using the new Void War bases on the whole team. What else could you possibly base a Space Pirate team with?

Thinking of the loadouts, I know it's not very meta of me, but I want to run a lot of pistols & swords builds for these.. I mean, it's pretty much a Pirate staple innit? Watch any movies or images of Pirates, and they all have a pistol and a sword.. For specialists, I want at least the healer, psyker and the warp spider ninja gal. My heavy has to be a Shuriken Cannon operative, as it's such an iconic Eldar weapon.

Also shopped a quick transform of the RT pirate helmet for lulz. Obvsly the stripes wouldn't fold back like that in the paintscheme - Although this might be a cool painting idea? To paint the helm sides symmetrically, as on the sides of a fish?

Ah yes thats the nostalgic stuff!
I can totally relate to the eye injury deal. nearly tore my left one out a couple of years back and (although it never burst or anything) the swelling and area damage did subside but I struggle to focus it for prolonged periods so its a cowson for fine detail over long hours. hence my recent slowdown as far as number of models released online these years so, yeah, as I say, I can relate.

we simply must know where the heads will be from!
actual RT era stuff or 3rd party would be ideal no?

space pirates are always fun enough, then you go and use the magic words 'Rogue-Trader-era' and I'm like, yup, thats me following!

Oh snap, I didn't realize your situation was that bad! FWIW I think your painting skills are still top notch, so you seem to be coping quite well, all things considering..

Some wonderfully committed Eldari fans on this board steered me in the right direction with the heads. There is an older windriders kit (it was sold by GW until 2015) which comes with 3 RT-style helmets (attached to the upper torso though so will need some cutting & fitting). I have already bought one such kit from ebay, and am sourcing more heads little by little. Old used ones, covered in globs of paint seem affordable enough, just a matter of stripping and snipping em off. Reckon I'll only need around 8-10 altogether, because I want to use a few other heads as well, mainly for the leader, psykers, and the shade runner.. But things are still wildly in flux, early days and all that. I did also buy 10 Howling Banshee mask heads, was thinking I could try modding their grilles and see what that looks like, but not sure I'll be able to do a neat enough job with the mods. Besides, Howling Banshee heads are incomplete without the hairpieces, so might turn out to be a dead end..

Goal is to make enough Corsairs for a decent roster, so will probably make more than 9, unless I decide to magnetize a few models for swapping out my Gunner operative options (Basically, all Corsair Gunners are superb depending on the opponent).

There are quite a lot of Elven bits available in the entire GW range (40K + AOS + Bloodbowl), still figuring out my options.. and haven't even started looking at 3rd party bits offerings hehehe! I don't want to go too crazy, as I do like the more minimalistic RT Eldar style, just a few bits here and there..

thanks man. and yeah, its more about limited timethese days. I can do ok as long as I don't push it too hard for too long... then it all goes blurry and I find I can't paint for smeg...

but I never show that stuff...

no, thats fixed and sorted before the camera comes out LOL

yes the old windrider heads are ideal aren't they...
These ones ont he old biker torsos, I assume:

I plum forgot they still existed, till just recently as you said but I can see what you mean now...

First batch of heads arrived and got cracking!

Here's the first pistolier draft (the head is only blutacd, position subject to change). I think I want to lose the cape, but will need a suitable backplate bit replacement in to cover the back/neck. Bits from the current Guardians kit oughta be more or less suitable..

That's awesome. Really evocative of the older look, while still blending well with the modern kit. If you want a little variety, the shuriken cannon bike kit from the same time comes with a metal torso. It has the same style helmet but with a topknot/plume.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes. I've got my own corsairs faction, which I'm swapping heads with the intermediate corsairs from doom of mymeara. I'd also like to do more obviously 'ship crew' corsairs that look like the original Jes Goodwin sketches. This is more along those lines, so I'm interested to see the outcome.

Oh, where was I? Oh yes

Apologies, progress is stalling, coming by with specific Eldar bitz is difficult! I'm currently looking for a single Howling Banshee mini, single Dire Avengers mini would be required for the Shuriken Cannon op

Still haven't been able to source required bitz to continue my Corsairs builds. I have enough helmets now, but lack a bunch of torsos from the Eldar kit range. I'll try to find a seller on ebay who specializes in selling single miniatures, if you know some sellers like that in the EU, please let me know! Currently hunting for a Howling Banshee, Dire Avenger, and a Ranger, looking for specific single models (or rather, their constituent bitz)..

In the meantime, our new 10th ed 40K Campaign is about to start, and I've been busy creating a rules supplement which enables us to use all our toys in the Campaign, combining games of Killteam (both open and into the dark missions) and Boarding Actions 40K with regular games. It's based on the Planetary Empires tileset and draws inspiration from the forst edition Mighty Empires boardgame, some of you might remember that one? It was a cool boardgame but a bit too detailed for running 40K Campaigns, so I've taken just some rules paradigms from it, such as representing armies as "anonymous" pointed blobs, but also adding in a Crusade force to each player in addition to their anon forces.

So the group is interested in the Campaign, but most of them haven't played KT21, we'll do some into games first and then decide whether we will be adding KT21 aspects to the whole thing or just keep it 40K only.. and for the intro game, since most of the players are starting with a Compendium KT21 team, I might as well do a Compenium team out of my Scions I got in Ashes Of Faith.

The Scions kit hasn't aged all that well, and I already decided to kitbash Palanite Enforcer torsos to get rid of the odd proportions of the old torsos. Started work on these last night, was a bit worried as on how this will work out, but I think these will turn out great as long as I take my time with the cutting and ease the shapes in to make the Scion arms connect with the Enforcer torsos. The shoulderpads were very easy to trim down with clippers, the rest is just a matter of incremental small shavings and cleanup

One thing I'd like to ask from you, should I use the enforcer neckline bit in the head socket or not? I kind of like the way these look with their heads tucked in..

Here's tonights build sketch - added the antenna and the searchlight, those will need a bit more work though..

had to order a coupla more of the head bits without skulls, I tried to neatly carve out the skull on this one but it didnt turn out perfec.. so once again, I am waiting for more parts LOL

Contemplating on splurging on another Scion kit, just to get 5 more backpacks.. bits sellers bundle the backpacks with the hotshot lasguns which makes them obscenely expensive as spare parts.. If I just add like a tenner more, I'll get another full kit already, sheesh!

Thanks!

The neckline thing is divisive isnt? Suppose I shall have to test both configs, and capture ref. picts before we can proceed to finalizing the builds..

For me personally, its all about the rule of cool, if a more anatomically correct build still looks less fun, I'll go with the troglodyte neckline, we always want a hint of fun with the builds when it comes to Killteam

Here is the next sketch, five operatives done now. Leader pistol pose tweaked, feels better.. This would basically qualify as a Compendium fire team, if it werent for the fact that medic can only be included in Inquisition teams.. anyway, I will do more, I want to field 10 of these and the medic will be a spare model for inq team use

Next up, checking out those necklines and comparisons..

I really like the sunk-in look, like they've made an executive decision to sacrifice visibility and maneuverability for protection.

Palanite Scions are on hold, my replacement heads got stuck in customs limbo and might not even arrive..?

But finally got one of the kitbash torsos for my Corsairs, so I'm continuing working on them. Got that Ranger torso I was after for my Shade Runner, but before I start cutting it up, thought I'd just try a few sketches, just to see how she'd look as one of the other operatives. Could also work as any of these too, I suppose.. For the Shade Runner bash, I'll need to cut the left shoulderpad and the hoodie off from the back, add the Warp Field generator, and just switch the arms and the head..

That Fate Dealer build doesn't look too shabby.. Anyways, here's the intended build before any cutting or deeper bashing. I decided today I wont be building my Hand Of The Archon at all, so their entire kit shall serve as optional bitz for my Corsairs. I've got plenty of ideas I want to experiment with!

I need your input on the next one - using Drukhari legs seems OKish enough, but do these Drukhari arms look to thin? I was thinking I might be able to get away with the smaller hands due to this op being female, but is the scale difference too drastic?

EDIT: Seems like GW's scaling of Eldar & Drukhari has remained consistent through the years.. Back in the 2010's, I was kitbashing a gang for Necromunda, using Eldar Guardian torsos for the gangers and Drukhari torsos for the juves, and a similar scale discrepancy seems to exist even now. I could maybe do two of my Corsair warriors as juves? Which, would actually play well into why their oufits look edgier I'll build initial sketches of all of em before deciding..

Preliminary rough cuts for the Shade Runner done.. now, just a matter of tightening up the fits a bit more. I was worried if I was going to be able to cleanly transplant the left shoulderpads from the Corsair torsos, answer seems to be yes!

Next op in line would be the Shuriken Cannon dude, but I still haven't found a bitz seller who sells individual Dire Avenger models.. so I'll see what else I can come up with the HOTA bitz

I still have 5 operatives to build before painting, and will probably make a couple test models while sussing out the paint scheme. I am leaning towards the classic blue with striped, yellow helmets RT look.

Anyways, here's all 5 Corsair sketches so far, my holidays are coming to a close, not sure I'll have more time to work on these for a while, but I'll be hunting more bitz in the meantime (Way Seeker neads her head, need a Banshee torso, Dire Avenger torso etc)

EDIT: Changed pict for a hosted version, should look crisper on the page now?
