https://variety.com/2023/film/news/victoria-alonso-marvel-studios-exit-1235559674/

Marvel Studios executive Victoria Alonso has exited the studio, Variety has confirmed.

She joined Marvel Studios in 2006 as executive vice president of visual effects and post-production, serving as co-producer on early Marvel Cinematic Universe films like “Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor” and “Captain America: The First Avenger.” Since then, Alonso has worked as an executive producer on every Marvel Studios film and TV show since 2012’s “The Avengers.”

In 2015, Alonso was promoted to executive VP of production, and in 2021 she was upped to president of physical, post production, VFX and animation at Marvel Studios. In her role, she oversaw all of Marvel’s post-production, including its visual effects work, which has come under repeated and vociferous criticism by visual effects professionals.

Most recently, the special effects in last month’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” came under fire, and reviews for the film were notably more negative than previous Marvel movies. The third installment of the “Ant-Man” franchise had its largest opening weekend ever ($105 million), but fell below 2015’s “Ant-Man” and 2018’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp” at the worldwide box office. Last year’s TV series “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” also received some backlash for the look of the titular green hero among the devoted MCU fans.

Not a producer! Nooo... (cue sad walking away music from Incredible Hulk)

Looks like a sop to VFX companies so they can say how much Disney (sorry, 'Marvel Studios') has changed as a company.

She was one of the head producers at Marvel Studios.

And also the one that said "X-Men" was a dated term, so maybe her leaving is for the best.

What's supposed to be wrong with She-Hulk's visual design?

Their first previews had clearly unfinished cgi stuff in them, where she was just too bright a green and really stood out from her surroundings as not real, which drove a lot of the early criticisms of it. It was better by release.

What do you know. Feels like there's a lesson about advertising with unfinished material in there.

Also probably a lesson about running your effects department on constant crunch time where they’re working on that stuff right up until the last minute.

Some people are highly invested in finding proof the MCU is failing. Also just the nature of clickbait headlines.

I'd never heard of her, outside of the big names like Feige and Iger I'm totally unaware of the executives, and even then only because those guys are so prominent.

That said, when someone assumes a role, and the very thing that they're now responsible for begins to attract criticism where before there was largely praise, and then subsequently noises are made about "getting back on track" and that same person leaves that role, there really is only one narrative that strikes me as likely.

I have to imagine after working in the same franchise for nearly 20 years, she's gotta be bored out of her mind and ready to do literally anything else.

We'll almost certainly never know, the executive class don't get fired, they decide to "explore new opportunities," "spend more time with their family," etc, so it's impossible to tell if she jumped or got pushed.

But as I said, when the tenure of the person ostensibly in charge of "Physical, Post Production, VFX and Animation" coincides with that department attracting unprecedented criticism, there's some easily joined dots visible.

I don’t agree.

For all we know, she’s retired entirely.

For all we know, another company has made her an offer she couldn’t refuse.

For all we know, she’s had a spiritual awakening and has taken up the life of an off-grid spoon whittler.

Simply “couple of criticisms ergo she was fired/pushed/honourably departed” seems a bit, and not accusing any Dakkanaut, a bit 4chan. Like how everything Kathleen Kennedy does is always her “last chance saloon” according to certain really quite insistent weird internet man babies. Usually quoting “insider sources”, the source being their arse, the insider being….their arse.

Inside Victoria Alonso’s Shocking Exit From Marvel Studios - Variety

At this year’s Academy Awards, Victoria Alonso was overwhelmed.

The veteran Marvel Studios executive and producer of the nominated film “Argentina, 1985” was stopped on the red carpet, posing for photographers assigned to capture top executives on Hollywood’s big night. But something shocked her.

“Look at this! Two women!” Alonso said of the female photographers hired for the gig (as in most corners of Hollywood, women are outnumbered by men on the photo line). Emotional, Alonso insisted the pair put down their cameras and pose for a photo with her in front of a giant Oscar statuette. As they all smiled, she told them, “We’ve worked so hard to get here and we’re not going anywhere.”

Eight days later, she was fired as Marvel’s president of physical production, post-production, VFX and animation, three individuals familiar with the matter told Variety. The shakeup came as a surprise to many in show business and within the vast Marvel comic book fandom (a community with a prominent online presence and an in-person significance, at the many multiplexes where the studio releases its films).

Is there some connection between that last paragraph and the preceding paragraphs? Something left out?

So not even “industry insiders” but three folk apparently somehow, but not explained how, familiar with the matter, said.

Cool.

Perhaps she was fired. I’m not ruling that out.

But that’s not exactly what I’d call a solid source. Like….at all.

How are they familiar with it? Have they dished out solid info before? Is it just Larry, Curly and Moe off of 4chan who say they’re familiar with it because they totally watched a YouTube video about it? Gonna take more before anyone needs to be getting out their pram about this.

That is the first three paragraphs of a much longer article found at the link. As noted, she was fired and not merely decided to change jobs.

This seems like a really weird hill you've picked.

Executive gets appointed to role - department she's responsible for received unprecedented criticism where there was previously near universal praise - senior management changes - executive leaves role suddenly - scuttlebut has it that she was fired.

Occam's razor suggests the obvious, and you're "na-uh, maybe she left to open a yoga retreat."

No.

My entire point is “so what?”.

If she was fired, she was fired. So what? What’s the interest here?

Hands up if anyone here even heard her name before this thread?

Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? Anyone? No? Dust? Anyone? Dust? Bueller? No? Dust.

That the reports so far seem to have slim evidence is entirely beside my point.

Indeed, I’m wondering what the point of this thread is. Someone no longer has job they had.

OK. So what? Why should you, I or indeed anyone particularly care?

I have.
But that's because I sit there in the theatre & read as much of the credits as I can while they roll. There's a fair # of names (people & companies) that I recognize film-to-film after 30some Marvel entries. Some names I recognize from other non-Marvel stuff. Hers is one of them.

It's just industry/insider gossip, like e.g. 90% of 'society' reporting, or stuff about the various clusters of royals and celebrities. It's not inherently interesting, but a lot of people enjoy it as a pastime. Idle chatter about things in the private life of people that doesn't affect you in the slightest, i'm pretty sure people have been complaining about gossip and blabbermouths in the oldest sumerian clay tablets

Beyond that, there's certainly been a sense that Phase 4 and, as much as we've seen it, Phase 5 is starting to tarnish a little in the fans eyes.

Anyone who's a fan of the movies and wants it to get back to where it has been is going to be interested to know that someone who one can easily point at as having fumbled the ball on a key element of those films has moved on.

Whether she moved on voluntarily or not is important as it speaks to the opinions of those in positions to make those decisions and what their intent may be going forward.

I'd have thought this was pretty self evident, but apparently not.

Of course, who now steps into the role is of far more interest in terms of the health of future MCU projects, but that isn't in the public domain yet afaik.

Is it though?

I watch a lot of films. Working from home kicks ass.

But outside of director and cast? And OK Tom Savini and similar backstage legends? I couldn’t give the steam off my Tinker’s exactly who headed up a given department.

I genuinely mean no disrespect to the wizards that do a lot of the heavy lifting. Indeed a former school friend won a technical Oscar.

But this still boils down to “person had job now no have job”. That’s…..that’s it. It doesn’t impact the whole of the thing, let alone my life or your life, unless you had a decent stake in a super niche odds bet and have as a result made a decent amount of money. In which case, awesome. Go you I applaud your good call!

Yet the stench of 4chan lingers,

Genuine question: what does any of this have to do with 4chan? Or do you just use that as a shorthand for right/anti-left leaning online communities in general?

Just because you've got a tenuous grasp on how the executive elements of a studio can fundamentally, and often terminally, impact the quality of a finished movie or whether or not it reaches its audience unfortunately doesn't make it less important.

You're free to not be interested, just stop trying to equate your lack of interest with a lack of importance.

People have been complaining about MCU cgi. Person in charge of cgi gets fired. I mean, I don’t know how much more plainly it can be put. If the head of GW’s design department was fired tomorrow, you wouldn’t care? You don’t think they would effect their games?
