Upstate, New York

Welcome all to the 98th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month, we are prepping for Doomsday: The end is nigh! Whether a crazed cultist prophesising the end of the world, or a vicious warlock ready to commit such acts themselves, your entry should be themed around an apocalpytic event, either one to come, one that has already happened or one that will occur as soon as your entry opens fire!

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of April and will end at midnight EST on April 30th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Struggling about in Asmos territory.

Here's what I'm going to enter with first proof pic added.

Name: Belok the Ork devil.
Type: kitbash between daemon prince and loads of Ork bits.

Background story: (long read)
Spoiler:

The rise of Belok, being the end of all else.
-
Long long ago, back when Orks still only knew black speech and perhaps enough common tongue to manage threatening the ooms that dared to come attempt and trade with them.. (and therefor trades ending in simply 'gifts', the ooms service included.) There was a rumor even among orks that there was a bad Orky behavior that could only end in all encompassing destruction..

Orks are a jolly lot, that want to build up their treasury of "tributes, grabs and gains, foods, ales and shinies, mojo tingz and not so mojo containing tingz utilized for more straightforward dakka.." ..Not lose everything in a blaze of r'hir.

Alas, in such 'ancient times' the Orkiest priests among the tribes warned with their powder coated finger up in the air.. -"nev'r ta drink da blud of anytingz, datz bahd Orky behaviurz".

Ofcourse there were always heretical Orks that would exactly try out anything warned against.. (heretical? Come on.. thats ORKY AS HECK)
And so whenever they klomp'd or Dakka'd something good, they would have a taste and find out that this practice would pretty much affect them ..positively. (hmm!)

They would soon turn into frenzied Orks, their very skin turning red as they drank more and more.. clans were erected that focussed on the obtaining of buckets of blood, in particular that of ooms.. which were usually most sweet and sugary.. and the elby's which had a bit of mojo carry over, much appreciated by blood clan priests turning into weirdboyz soon after..

Then.. it was one specific clan.. that of the blood rock.. being at that point the rising star among the blood Ork clans.. that suddenly declared war on all other Orks ..

The Ork clans were quite suprised and a council was held to determine what could've been the reason.. so a envoy was sent to the blood rock region.. soon after returning missing both hands and ears..

At the council the Ork boss of one of the early blood clans came forward to inquire.. and learned that the envoy had been witness to cages, boxes and pens full of both living and dead Orks..

The boss of the blood rock region being a huge fat Ork called Flessgraluk'r da choomgoth.. laughed loudly at the pressence of the envoy, emediately hacking off his ears with which he declared "den lat kan lizzen betta tu wat me haz to blah!" (then you can listen better to what I have to say)
Then continued to state that his clan had found the "secretz" of "da blud" and that Orky blud would increase their craze a hundred fold, practically making Orks into berserk brutes that scoffed off incoming fire no matter how overwhelming until nothing of them was left to advance. It had caused their Orks to advance and shoot or cleave apart the enemy while missing half their chest and head, while on fire and electrocuted.. caring nothing about anything but slaughtering everything in their sight.

"lat nub nedz da handz wen lat nub waagh.." (you don't need your hands when you don't fight) Flessgraluk'r' had mocked the envoy before he was allowed to travel back to the council..

The council members (all Ork bosses) were dumbstruck.. and instead of worry they all became exited as the blood clans took initiative and cheered on this news.. ~If such a craze giving effect existed.. that would increase their victories and therefor spoils many times!..

Quickly they argued on which clans were the best candidates to be targetted for a new industry of Ork blood.. ofcourse it had to be clans that were quickly re-generating Orks.. and preferably held a lot of blood.. so big Orks.. most optimally the strong kind..

After a week of ongoing discussion.. it was decided that Goff clans were the best clan to war against.

The Goff council members were ambushed and slain the same day.

-
After many decades of having interwarred and saturated themselves on the Goff blood.. the Blood clans had been outcast, considered no better than monsters.. but they also attained a sort of mythical status among Ork culture .. with stories arising of that when ever the Blood clans would manage to drink more blood than they could contain.. then the Devil Belok would come from hell and drink with them.. ushering in doomsday .. which would require the slaughter of the entire realm.. as the Devil would never be satisfied no matter how much he drank.

Alas..
A great waagh broke out in which the Ork's were so overrun by Eldar. Marines and Tau having brokered a treaty against them.. that after years of ongoing back and forth skirmishes there was no soil left that did not emediatly border marshes.. if not seas! of blood..
It had been especially the Goff orks that had lead the waagh against the alliance, lead by their prophet.. but the alliance had all but erradicated them..
The blood clans naturally got wind of it and infiltrated the battleground, often drinking it all up like cattle around a lake.. and then.. one cursed day.. the stories proved true..

The ground cracked open, and out of it crawled an Immense ghoulish Ork .. its skin alternating between twilight green and freshest blood red pulsing like his enveloping heartbeat, its guise salivating from an unquenshable thirst..

Wherever it walked.. any soil that had not been painted with the drink of champions started to smoke and soon after catch on fire..
It spoke not.. it moaned in anticipation as it swung its hell-forged axe cleaving through numbers of marines, eldar and Tau at once.. grabbing their screaming upper bodies and wringing out of them every drop as he held his victims dieing torsos above his portruding fangs in brief lived enjoyment.
Blood Orks danced in celebration from afar.. never heeding the repercussions that would ultimately also be their own demise.
The realm would certainly be cooked for this god 'Belok'.. this .. Chok'a Trok Belok'. (rock of Belok's thirst)

Tanks, Wraithknights, Custodes, Tau warmachines.. all that attempted to drive Belok back into the underworld.. were either burnt in the seas of eternal flames or cleaved to smoldering shreds by Belok himself..

While the armies of Man retreated to the outskirts of the realm, the Tau were decimated and the Eldar turned to the Webway stunned by their own defeat..
Millions of lightyears away.. still loomed a single eye.. a single mind.. wondering about the power that could be obtained were this Belok to be added to its bioform..

Fin.

So, after discussions in the previous month's thread, I've decided Eldar is okay for this challenge, however I now realise that exodites are even better - they were fleeing the Eldar apocalypse, after all.

My entry this month is going to be a model I started converting four or five years ago, but never got round to finishing because I couldn't work out how to do it. It's Astreia Solbright's dracoline with a kitbashed/converted rider - I love the dracolines in the Stormcast range, and really wanted to add them to my Exodite project, so here she is: Anand Starfall, the Ash Queen of the Exodites, riding Aedh the dracoline.

Anand herself is going to be painted with a dark green coat, white armour and red accents, but I have no idea what colours to paint the dracoline... I'm open to any suggestions if people have any? I have a vague idea that I want him to be forest-y colours (or, at least, he wouldn't seem out of place amongst trees) as he would be a forest dweller in my lore and she would originally be from a forest clan before ascending to queendom... but beyond that I have no idea. Help would be very welcome!

I have a rules question. I was thinking of painting Anakin, but Anakin's basecoat and his base's basecoat aren't the same color. Is this allowed? I did that a year and a half ago when I prepped a batch of models. Never thought at the time that it might get in the way of anything.

Say hello to Sister Verity, keeper of the Domesday Book of Slaanesh, which like the real one is actually a census rather than a foretelling of the end of everything - in this case, the book knows everyone's deepest darkest fantasies, which Verity shouts out at the top of her lungs mid-battle, because there's nothing for making infantrymen question whether they're really ready to lay down their lives for their CO like hearing how he's got a secret stash of Ork porn. Plus Verity's daemonette-lectern-amplifier, so everyone down the back can hear her clearly.

Actually bought that Dialogus last year for the 'helpers' topic, but didn't really develop a solid idea for how to convert her, so the Warpsmith got all the attention back then.

Death to the false emperor!
Glory to the four-armed Emperor!
...

Wait, am I at the wrong riot?
You here you overthrow the corrupt government and welcome our saviors from beyond the stars?
Well, from beyond reality from the warp, but basically the same.
Cool! After we are done burning down the governor’s palace, come on over to the lair, we have grenades and cupcakes.
Sounds like a plan!

You might want to go with tiger stripes, if not tiger colors. They are orange because many animals can’t tell the difference between orange/green. This may or may not hold true on other planets/ecosystems.

But if you go green tiger, you get battlecat, which may or may not be a bad thing.

lol, I don't think I want to make my Exodites into a MotU faction...

Orange is an interesting idea, though. Maybe more towards the brown or yellow end, with a white underbelly and black/dark grey scales/spikes... hmmm...

I don't want to start painting them until the Really Very Regrettable Life Choices painting contest rolls around.

Revised proof pic, because I just undercoated these other two - Verity and her lectern are still the focus this month, but chaos being naturally blessed with doomsdayness anything could really qualify, and I feel like these make a nice group together.

Noted on the idea file.

Might need to be broadened up a bit, “Poor choice” or "Mistakes were made” “Bad Call’. Many times people are in a bad situation, often due to their own poor choices etc etc...

A Protoss colony world

Gonna really go with a blast from the past on multiple levels. Anybody remember the Assassinorum: Execution Force boxed game GW made as a way to sell their new Assassin models? Back in 2015 I think? I realized that I still had some unpainted models from that set, those being the Chaos Sorcerer Lord, his familiar and the three push-fit Chaos Marines. I used to play Chaos Space Marines but don't anymore (no, Dark Angels don't count, they are the most loyal Marines of all), so this will be the first time in a while that I've painted any of those. Here's the proof pic:

This fits the theme very well because in that game, the Sorcerer is performing a ritual that will destroy an entire star system (doomsday indeed). The familiar is the game marker that counts down the time until the ritual completes and it's game over for the billions of Imperial citizens living in that system. And the Chaos Marines are the most formidable enemies trying to prevent those pesky Assassins from stopping their lord doing his wicked work. This will be a fun little side project, I think; just don't tell the Inquisition!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 7 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

Love the "mistakes were made" title. I can just imagine a guardsman lying on the ground as a carnifex towers over them, then the obligatory *record scratch* *freeze frame* "Yup, that's me. I bet you're wondering how I got myself into this situation..."

Hmm, I'm having second thoughts. We all seem to be in agreement that this month's theme of Ascension Day lends itself to particular individuals and I'm kind of getting in the mood. I might just switch to a different entry.

On a positive note, there's always a second chance for Anakin if we get the recently discussed Mistakes Were Made as a topic.

For the time being I have a really good feeling about Kaboom Girl, so I'm going to try and paint her.

And to preemptively address the inevitable rumors, she is definitely not crazy, undoubtedly not a cultist and most assuredly not trying to bring about the end of the world. That's just Imperial propaganda. Her job is to provide fireworks on Ascension Day. Because everybody loves fireworks!
