Welcome all to the 99th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month, Mistakes Were Made: Many times people are in a bad situation, often due to their own poor choices. They made a bad call, signed up for the wrong job, read the map wrong and ended up at wrong battlefield. Really Very Regrettable Life Choices. Your entry should be in the wrong place, at the wrong time, or otherwise in over their head in trouble.

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of May and will end at midnight EST on April 31th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

So I bet you are wondering how we got in this situation…

These guys were almost the squad I painted up to go with the lictor earlier, but from a game play POV I wanted the las fusils for including in lists. When your snipers have their pistols out and the sarge is screaming for backup you know something has gone wrong. Also, whenever you are in charge range of a swarmlord.

So I had a really good idea for this, but it's the one I'm planning on doing next month as 'celebration', because to you and me it may look like an abomination but that's exactly what my Slaaneshis were hoping would happen, so... Anyway.

Backup plan: nobody, not even the most depraved worshipper of Slaanesh, wants to wind up a chaos spawn, right?

(Spoiler warning, this one did actually want to wind up a chaos spawn. Look these characters just turn up unannounced in my head, I'm not responsible for them.)

Good one. Not quite what I was envisioning, though.

The beginning of Army of the Dead pretty much nails it, come to think of it.

A peasant from a small and well defended village finds more than he bargained for on his travels.

Perhaps he should have heeded the warnings of his fellow villagers, that some malignant presence had only recently been spotted….amidst piles of corpses contorted into ghastly sculpts… alas, this brave adventurer fell foul of his own steely resolve, and now contemplates his error to the symphony of his own cracking bones!

These guys are the result of so many mistakes. By Richard Cameron, by Kerensky, by Amaris, by the IS noble houses, by Kerensky again, by a bunch of other grumpy guys, by another Kerensky, by Comstar, und so weiter.

Conveniently they also represent the bulk of my remaining unpainted mechs… funny how that works

Mostly, on my phone.

Right. On many levels, Mistakes were Made fits these guys a little too well:

4 from the rest of my first set of Rashaar/ Cult of Dagon. A mistake for me because I REALLY don't need a 3rd faction for Carnevale.
A mistake for anyone who thinks they're just a nice, friendly church and not a cult of a great old one.
Oh, and mistake for them because they're summoning this bad boy:

The Morgraur. It's a big 'un.

All in all, mistakes made.

Alright, it's finally time. I'm entering the first Primarch I will have painted in about 6 years, Lion El'jonson of the Dark Angels. Proof pic:

He fits the theme because he made some mistakes, most notably sending Luther home to Caliban without any oversight or even a quick check-in, resulting in Caliban's destruction and Lion himself ending up in a 10,000 year coma. But now, HE'S BACK BABY!

Another small way he might fit the theme is if you believe that the Emperor made a mistake when he chose Horus over the Lion to be Warmaster. The Imperium's history might have been very different if the Lion took over the Crusade. But I guess we'll never know.

Edit: and if you're wondering why I glued the model together, I didn't. The shield and backpack are held on by friction right now, and he balances well on the base even without glue. I'll pull it all apart for painting, I'm not a total masochist!

Struggling about in Asmos territory.

Hey guys, for my entry I will make a marker unit because I am kindof out of spare bodies other than a few peons from the Garganth boxes.. so I thought of some options and decided to do a bolting horse with a peon, but to stick to the theme there has to be a little story to what the flip is goin on' so here you go;

Phonzo the cursed is a page of sir Tarosso, an atleast five hundred times recast knight of Sigmar who always at the failings of Phonzo ends up dented dead.. but.. because he is too proud he refuses to acknowledge that his page is such a mess-up and just takes the loss again and again.. to hope lessening the times Phonzo causes problems he has allowed his page to wear some of the finest Sigmarite armor, albeit only as much as Phonzo can carry without dieing of exhaustion from the weight begin with.

Phonzo himself for some reason, has yet to fall even once.. (naturally, being fatal to his existence being just a peon.) landing his curse onto Tarosso's fate for evermore.

Now, the scenario depicted in this marker unit may hopefully be Phonzo's kicker..sparing Sigmar hundreds more of the hassle of having to recast Tarosso. WE SHALL SEE!

-

Phonzo was accompanying (obviously) Tarosso who had just polished his entire armor to look the part doing some diplomacy with the revenants of the Sylvaneth, Tarosso sitting on his horse one of the finest breeds, noticed that up ahead the road was overrun with brambles, thicker than usual.. likely a sign of entering Sylvaneth territory..
"hmm! impedimentis obstructionatum preventoranum!!" Tarosso exclaimed, expressing the concern to progress..
Phonzo raised his hand and stated "My sir knight! Let me do awayeth with these brambleses so that for onceth we maketh and completeth our questh..eth.."

Tarosso raised his vizor and declared proudly.. "Which with shall thou do this deed? Page Phonzo!"

Phonzo felt acknowledged and in his enthousiasm grabbed on to Tarosso's crossbow dangling from a strap beside his steed.. prepared to shoot away the brambles with atleast a thousand bolts required. "With your blessings! Sir Taros.." *SWHINGGGK*

The crossbow went off from its single loaded bolt hitting Tarosso's steed in its thigh, the creature rushed straight into the brambles tearing Tarosso clean in half while Phonzo' was entangled into the strap, pulled along after it..

"Phonzoooooo..." Tarosso's disembowled torso whailed as Phonzo disappeared into the distance, attached to his horse..
Tarosso's horse galopped in a panic past numerous suprised revenants until finally bolting at Drycha's clearing.. throwing Phonzo forward screaming..
Where did Phonzo land? Would he ..still ..be alive? (sigh!), did Sigmar break another soul forge in frustration for having to once again reforge Tarosso?
Do Revenants eat horses?

These are the questions one must ask.. or perhaps doesn't care to ask..

Perhaps.. it would be better to forget about Phonzo..

But for those who cannot!.. Phonzo being thrown off Tarosso's horse can function as a marker to games looking to reveal Phonzo's fate.. dead or alive.

Every once in a while, I look into the Closet of Shame, and realize that I will never live long enough to paint everything I have. Twice a year, usually while my wife and son are off visiting her family, I purge some of the backlog. While it is nice to have the closet a little emptier and a lot cleaner, I invariably regret getting rid of things. My worst regret, my biggest mistake if you will, was my box of Chaos Dwarf Renegades. I sold them for a pretty good sum (normally I just give stuff away), but no amount of money can fill the spiky, dwarf-shaped hole in my heart. I eventually caved and started picking them back up off of Ebay, but it's not the same.

For this month's challenge, I will be painting these dudes:

and choose the best of the lot as my entry.

Now showing more Samurai Marines, Bad Squiddo Amazons, and an Oldhammer Chaos Thug!

Painting total as of 3/28/2024: 21 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

I've finally got a bit of time to paint again (at last!). I think I'm going to enter 30k marines this month.

I'm writing a story about a group of pre-heresy-era marines (one from each legion) who were stuck together on a ship (an imperial dauntless light cruiser) and sent off into the cosmos as a publicity stunt. One thing leads to another and suddenly they're drifting, alone, through an extremely hostile galaxy, trying desperately to survive.

It's a project I started a few years ago, using the mkiii and mkiv kits. I've kitbashed each character with forgeworld bits and other modifications to individualise them. I'm also intending to do characters from the crew and army contingent on board the ship (I've got navy breachers, guard, and I'm attempting to kitbash the ship's Commodore, Lieutenant Commander, sub-lieutenant deck crew, and iterators/remembrancers along for the ride, as well as a few other outside characters), but I'll most likely stick to marines for this entry.

The proof photo is below, obviously the ones I've started painting won't be entered. I've ringed the ones that have only been primed, which will be Imperial Fists, Iron Warriors, Alpha Legion, Iron Hands, Space Wolves, Death Guard and Salamanders. I'll select whichever ones I think are best from the ones I manage to get done. The ones in bags aren't built yet (and there are a couple more I'm waiting for the bits for). If I get any of those built and decide to enter them instead, I'll post additional proof pics first.

And yes, that is a Luna Wolves marine on the front row. Unfortunately I've mostly finished him previously, so he won't be entered...

Tricky theme this month. I have this ork pilot model I've been meaning to make diorama with. I figure if an ork pilot has boots on the ground, then something has gone terribly wrong. If I'm lucky and have time, I'll have the full diorama.

For this month I have 4 blade guard from the Indomitus box. I'm counting the guy with the standard because I think he is a bladeguard as well right? I've primed them with gold spray.

How does this fit in with mistakes were made? Well, as you can see, in one of the moves the spikes on the standard suffered some sort of wiggling event. Not sure what happened there. But I'm running with it.
It's also been 3 years since I meant to paint them so that's a mistake too.

Good luck to everyone!

Nice story Leopold Helveine and a great model choice

I'm going to do some sort of Ork Stormboyz Tyranid Gargoyles Conversion as a nod to Inquisitor Kryptman's decision to direct Hive Fleet Leviathan into the Octarius Ork Empire which became such a good fight Ghazghkull joined in .

The obvious answer is to wait until a day before the deadline, slap a quick and dirty paintjob on literally anything and regret it the moment you post the finished picture. Perfectly in theme.

Heheh thanks!!
(on the pic forgot to replace his axe with the story-featured crossbow (now fixed though!))
Still not 100% certain what hue the horse will be, am a bit 50/50 on either white or red.

Anyway, will the mistakes be made on the Ork end that have been assimilated into Tyranid ranks or are the mistakes made by the Tyranids having given angry spores the abillity to fly like a rabid bat?

I hear you. Lining those tanks can be a PITA. I’ve done mine with either a micropen or with a fine brush and ink. But I blackline, so a bit more options. Worth it though.

Did you grab a proof pic? Just a reminder that all entries need to be started in the month. Great work.
