Can't imagine pulling that off significantly better than it did.

And it gave us Rodney, who was possibly the most impressive bit character uplift in all television.

Pretty much all the characters were pretty solid. Ronin is of course the break out star and has gone to massive things. Not just because he’s a right handsome devil, but he also exudes charisma and screen presence.

Duncan Idaho being Ronin Dex was my favorite part of Dune.

Just start the show at a far away fob, introduce a couple characters and then Dr. McKay appears out of a gate and explains that he destroyed another galaxy... ours.

New show started.

I'd watch anything with Rodney tbh and that sounds on brand for him

That’s another interesting thing about the SGC compared to the Goa’uld.

The God’uld, being literal parasites rarely show much interest in truly understanding the toys and tech. The power they bring? Yes. But not necessarily a proper understanding of how they work and what else you might turn the underlying tech to.

Whereas the SGC kinda has that at the heart of their work. Yes, you could simply pinch a bunch of Jaffa Staff Weapons and replicate them. But if you can understand the principles of what makes them work? You stand to improve them.

Hence Carter was able to weaponise a Gate to knack a sun, and obliterate the forces built up by Apophis. Or using focussed Nukes to lock out the Ori Supergate - and knack an Ori ship and a Wraith Hive Ship alike.

Or to apply Naquadah to Nukes in the first place to drastically increase the yield.

Oh sure, there were some Goa’uld with more enquiring minds (Nerus, Baal). But they seemed very much the minority.

I'm very uncertain how this show will proceed.
If it's a "next generation" kind of show then we have new bad guys and maybe some sg1 cameos. Ok. But if it's bringing along all the collective baggage from SG1 then to me it would seem odd. Because it will devolve into what we already had. The names and faces change but the plot largely remains the same. Which was a problem that SG1 had. One bad guy topples and another more or less the same but more powerful bad guy shows up.
Sure it gave us 10 seasons and some mini movies and that was nice but how will this be different. Not that it should be that different. But I'm a SG1 fans so why should I care ?

More and new for the sake of more and new isn't always a good thing.
Don't get me wrong I do want this to be an enjoyable show that I look forward to watching.

Oddly I didn't really get into Atlantis and didn't really care that much for Universe. Universe being my least favorite and the least memorable.

I think I would like to see the Goa'uld make a big come back because I enjoyed them the most. A Human project to bring back the Asgard would also be fun especially if it went sideways. As in bringing back an extinct people might have consequences that were very much unforeseen, they simply have their own ideas and that could be outside of Americas interests. Granted that falls into the Jurassic movie plots but why not as long as it's interesting.

Time travel would also be a fun idea, they've done it before so why not do it again with the twist of gate travel to find our missing SG1 cameos. The resolution again may not thrill the long time viewers but that a season right there.

My worst case is just that they want modernize the cast more than give us fun adventures to watch. I have very little faith in the sensibilities of the modern world and Hollyweird. I mean I can't see how they can pull in 10 season while being victims of the latest social fashion aside from a big pile of money that they are more than willing to burn for reason other than providing entertainment, unless it's good for their taxes.

Speaking of time travel, why did they never use that to fix the pilot episode. That would have been a very silly episode and probably quite funny. SG1 sneaking around just to leave a device for Apophis to use to get back through the gate with out a DHD. An almost Scooby-Doo kind of episode. We'd still be talking about it to this day.

I guess all we can do is wait and see.

I also just discovered that the guy that did Stargate the movie did Independence day. It came up over this last weekend. I'd never realized that. Honestly Independence day was kind meh. Not really a movie I would pick to watch given other choices.

Sorry, I'm all over the place today.

A good chunk of the appeal of SG-1 for me was the underlying sense of responsibility.

Even in the movie, they did what they believed to be right at the time. And in bumping off Ra, freeing Abydos in the process? At that point they had every reason to believe that was it. Indeed so far as they or anyone knew? Ra was the only Goa’uld.

Then comes SG-1, where we find that the Abydos mission kicked an intergalactic hornet’s nest. As I covered before, the death of Ra greatly upset the balance of power between the System Lords. Eventually Apophis finds Earth, and it transpires that “yeah, Ra wasn’t even close to being the only Goa’uld”.

What follows is essentially the SGC trying to make good the damage they caused. Not only by finding ways to protect Earth, but bringing about the wholesale downfall of the Goa’uld and their Empire. Who knows how many human originating beings were freed as a result?

8 years later, Jackson and Vala do it again by letting the Ori know of our Galaxy.

There is room for a more strenuous critique of typically Western foreign policy, where one can’t simply intervene or meddle without repercussions, which may prove even worse than the status quo you helped dismantle.

What of Earth’s responsibility to formerly Goa’uld worlds? We removed their evil leaders, sure. But the worlds had been enslaved for millennia after all. How do you go about helping those worlds to grow and develop their own system of government, trade and alliances? Because if you just do nothing? You’re likely dooming at least some of those worlds to strife.

We see fractures in the Free Jaffa Nation early on. Sure, those are mostly smoothed over and greater unity restored. But realistically, especially for a warrior culture? How long is that going to last? How quickly might an initial show of force against another planet to secure necessary goods turn into a pattern of essentially bullying and imperialism of their own?

That sounds kind of depressing. At this stage I think I would prefer a full reboot that brings some innocent exploration and adventure.

Depends how you frame it.

Trying to maintain the hard won galactic peace isn’t that far from the events of S1-S10. Or indeed Atlantis.

Whilst the underlying themes could be serious ones, there’s no requirement for Poe faced reflective plots. You can still have fun with the cast and the how, even if the what is serious.

Has it been 30 years yet?

If it has... then we can finally get a live action version of Stargate Infinity!

I don't know how this has not been mentioned yet, but the big opportunity for something new is Furlings. They basically didn't feature in SG-1, which leaves ample room for expansion. You can have adventure and exploration in search of them, skeletons in their closet if you are in need of a new threat, stuff like that.

No need for putting tedious politics and the state of the galaxy in the center of a show that's always been best as lighthearted adventure.

Plus I want to see all the jokes about how they're not cute and fuzzy.

What about anti-SG-1? We encounter a corner of the galaxy where there’s another human planet at a similar tech level that stumbled across their Stargate and started using it to build their own little empire. Maybe they didn’t figure out how to compensate for stellar drift and have only been able to connect to a few gates in their local cluster. That could be a fun antagonist for doing “what if” storylines; not necessarily a “big bad” evil, but a more ruthless/mercenary group who have competing priorities and pop up occasionally and interfere. A bit like the Genii from Atlantis.

Yeaaa this isn't going to be SG-Picard

It's a show for a virgin audience, it's not going to be about old plot hooks, it's about getting the core Stargate vibe to new viewers. We can be happy if they're not actively trying to negate that the Stargate we know even happened.
