I've been brainstorming new ideas for Warhammer 40,000. One cool idea I came up with is Myopia. Myopia limits what targets an affected unit can interact with. Here are the full rules:

It is kind of like reverse Lone Operative. Instead of only being shot at by enemy units within 12", instead, the debuffed unit can only attack units within say 9" (or whatever the given range is depending on the ability). While a unit is affected by Myopia, essentially every unit it can target has Lone Operative.

Myopia can be a debuff given from stratagems, certain weapons, and unit abilities/powers. Myopia could also be a permanent debuff innate to the unit. Say some type of berserker unit that can only shoot and charge enemy units within 6" of it; some units already are supposed to only target the closest enemy unit.

What do the folks here think? And what units should it go on?

As a unit rule, you can tune it to the unit.
As a debuff you can inflict, it can range from devastating (12” max on an artillery piece) to pointless (12” max on a squad of Khorne Berserkers).

I like it… but I worry it could be too crippling to some units. Maybe make the infliction happen at short range, so they’d have at least ONE target?

It reminds me of the old crazy Chaos Dreadnought that would shoot and Charge the closest target... friend or foe.

I could have sworn we currently had at least one unit that did basically this. I've definitely pitched rules that inflict a, "may not target enemy units outside of X inches with ranged attacks," debuff somewhere along the way.

Which is to say, I like it, and I think it's fine. You'd just want to either be sparing with the max-range of the debuff (18" keeps the myopic unit from shooting across the table without making them unable to shoot nearby foes) or else make it relatively difficult/risky to inflict the debuff in the first place.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.
