Here is the information on Issue 321 of good ole WD which just arrived in the post. Enjoy!

------General Mag info------
Freebies A plastic Night Goblin, and a Plastic Dwarf

Editorial And guess what, the White Dwarf is still here! Telling us once again how he recommends buying the latest products from gw ^^

Store List Yup, its still here. So they removed it from issue 319, then put it back for 320 and 321 for some reason....

Letters Page Still none existant Page Count 127 (not including front page)

Pages of Adverts 33

Standard Bearer 2 pages talking about the rules published for games, how they sometimes get it wrong, and a few lines saying about how great everything about gw products are. But its getting better...

Convershun Klinic Also none existant, so they have removed it yet again for some reason (after putting it back last issue)

Games Day We have a survival guide this issue for Games Day (even though you can simply get one from the free booklet at GD, but still...)

 ------Main Gaming Systems------
 Warhammer Fantasy Content
1) 4 Pages of the designer for the new rulebook talking through changes
2) An Interview with Rick Priestley (man who created first FB rulebook)
3) 14 Page Battle Report for Battle of Skull Pass (2.5k points NG vs Dwarfs)
4) 2 Pages of Jervis Johnson liturally telling you that everything about Warhammer is great. His subtitles are even: "Great Miniatures, Great Stories and art, Great rules, Great game!" indivudually with some text underneath each one telling you why.
5) 2 Pages of mini summaries with little text for Dwarfs and Night Goblins, with 2 pages of Paint guides for both as well.
6) 2 Page Scenario - Battle for the Mines (Skull Pass)
7) 4 Page invite for people to go and play Warhammer at their local gw stores (with little text)
8) 6 Page Grand Tournament Army Showcase - Wood Elves

Warhammer 40k Content
1) Preview of new Eldar, with some shots of some of them together in an army pose
2) 6 Pages on the "Kappa Mortis Incident" (Cities of death scenario for Ultramarines vs Tau) basically advertising the new SM and Tau Megaforces released
3) 4 Pages of Ork terrain in Cities of Death (quite a few pics, little text)
4) A 2 page Advert for Dawn of War - Dark Crusade with some nice pics
5) Eavy Metal team - 6 Pages on painting Daemonhunters and Witch Hunters

Lord of the Rings Content
1) 13 Page Battle Report for Siege of Helms Deep
2) 3 Pages of picture's of the Balrog, with its stats, a small "How to Construct, and a extremly small paint guide (plus a "Buy Green Stuff!" mini shout)

Summary Yet another bad issue sadly. It seems that all the postivives (however minor they were) from last issue have mostly been taken away, or changed yet again (even though the battle report maps are still here, whoo). There is quite a bit of content for Fantasy this issue which is understandable because of the rulebook release and Battle of Skull pass, but there are still even some articles which have hardly any text in this for this (even though the font seems to have been made smaller for some of the bigger pictures), and with the lack of 40k and LOTR it doesnt make for a very good issue whatsoever. Overall Rating: 3 ~Dave

The 40K Bat Rep isn't even a real one. It looks like one, it smells like, one, but isn't.

Basically they took the two megaforces, provided a decent enough story for a fight, showed you the army lists then didn't deliver the goods. No actual battle report, just a big set up.

In actuality, now that I think of it, the entire issue this month is mostly "buy this stuff".

Why couldn't they show exactly how they made the Ork stuff, what they used etc... that would have been nice. Instead we get more "ohhh shiny". WD should be used to improve the hobby, i.e. painting, sculpting, bat reps, tactics. Didn't get too much of that this issue.

Although Jervis Johnson actually won a battle report, which is pretty amazing in and of itself. This issue I'm sure will be enshrined for no other purpose.

The article by him in the center however is IMHO a direct response the Mauleed RAW and not RAW argument. JJ basically says you RAW it. I expect for all of the new FAQ's to further reflect that stance.

I bet they would sell a lot more issues of WD if they just licensed the rights to some other company.

Am I being alzheimery again or did that batrep thingy already happen on the US side. If not they must have just done wone recently in a very similar manner.

I received the (UK) WD too yesterday and finished it almost in one go.
I realy, really liked it again.
(although I was home with a concussion which might explain things

I just like the new layout, just the way the WD looks. It's taste so not really explainable.
Bat reps are good but can be better. I like the real photograph style and it had more text explaining what was going on this time
(the medusa battle report last time was crap in that department).

Ok, it is GW's own magazine so they are going to say that everything is great, great great. But look at Battle for skull pass That si a GREAT! boxed set.
And the Tau and Space Marine Force are GOOD deals!.

I like the way GW shows their goods now: painted models and assorted bits liek with the Sniper Scouts, Dwarves etc. So I also do like the way they show off the Tau and Space Marine armie deals with a story and a scenario.

I like that their is a gamer army showed every time Last time it was Nids this time Wood Elves. Abd they show good armies! I wouldn't want to see bad paintjobs in WD no matter how original the army.

I did not miss Dok Butcha as I though the Merwyrm last time was Horrible (you should see the zombiemerwyrm one of my club members made for his zombiepirate force)

I totally agree with prodigalson that they should show more in the way of how they develop stuff

Well I read it, if by reading I mean scanned it for all of about three minutes. I saw the 40K Batrep which was actually a mission-something I had been proposing. Then I read it in detail and realized it wasn't a new mission. Absolutely nothing in the catalog registered below the yeast infection commercial on the TV at the time.

Ok here's the deal. I like the LOTR stuff-even though I don't play LOTR (or WFB for that matter). The minis are good and its overall as interesting as anythign else in the catalog. But what is the deal about constantly replaying old scenarios? Wouldn't that get mind numbingly dull after a while? Haven't we seen the Balrog 8 billion times?

On the positive my dog grabbed it when I wasn't looking and tore it into little little little strips of paper, saving me from the mistake of trying to read through it again. Good dog yes you are!

I'm getting real irked at the last several WD's seeming to be nothing but LOTR advertisments. I've never met a single person who plays the damn game. Get to talking about stuff that people care about.  I've got no problem with a big portion of the magazine going to WFB.  It's a good game, and their trying to push the new edition.  The 40K section was just a huge dissapointment though.  The Batrep was an insult really.  A shameless advertisement for their new wallet killers.  The only thing I can say I liked about the WD was the 2 page Eldar section, that showed off some of the new weapon stats, as well as what the Dire Avengers will be capable of.

So, you're requesting for GW to produce regional editions of the magazine to cover smaller areas? Or perhaps that's not even specific enough.....county editions? Town editions? Street editions?

People are buying LOTR. People are playing LOTR. People care about LOTR. I'm sorry that no one in your area is playing it, but enough people in your country are playing it to warrant the content. If they were not, GW would stop producing it as there would be no profit in it.

I'm not concerned there is major LOTR content. As noted its different and sometimes interesting, just aas WFB is (and I don't play that). But if its not terrain articles (which are decently good on the LOTR front) its usually glorifed advertisements and thats developed for all the game systems noted. its really gotten out of hand. One thing f this were a free advertising rag. Another thing to pay major bucks for.

Well since I've been in stores across several differant states, and even countries, since LOTR came out...

And? So have many of the rest of us.

50% of the time I enter a store that sells GW I haven't seen anyone playing ANYTHING by GW. And I've never seen any game played in a GW owned store, ever. I suppose that means that no one on the US East coast plays any GW games...

Every single time (thats right, 100%) I've been in a game store in Germany I've never seen anyone BUY any GW stuff, much less actually play the games. Shoot, I guess German profits must be way down...

Shoot, I haven't seen a game of Chess played in 10 years either, and everybody sells chess sets. Man, talk about a waste of production dollars there...

Point?

Perception is not necessarily reality.

The LOTR stuff is selling and people like it, even if you don't see it.

On a sad note, for the US White Dwarf crowd. Dirty Steve is no longer doing the mailbag. He's moving on. He wrote a rather nice goodbye and looked forward to still seeing folks at GTs.

What the hell is going on at GW and with the White Dwarf? Does this mean Dirty Steve is leaving GW? Sigh. He must mean the Indy GT's, since the GW GT scene has been all but gutted...

I think that transition was complete a long time ago... All they need to do now is increase the price for it.

It's funny, I heard that GW's customer retention rates, in a best case scenario, have shown them loosing 80% of their customers in 2 years in the UK, while in the US they loose 90% of their customers in 1 year. And let me reiterate, that's the best case scenario. I wonder what customer enticing thing they'll do next? Cut more studio/artistic staff? Fire what remains of the WD team? Raise prices (again)? Retract the already ridiculously thin and insulting FAQ & Errata, saying they're not needed, the rules are fine?

Wow, never heard that before. Where did those figures come from?Actually now you mention it, I see many gaming friends less and less times each year - either because I go less or we both are. Mmmmh, never thought about that before.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

Apparently they came from some poll that GW did in-house, hence the best case scenario bit. Keep in mind that thier target audience is kids, which is partially why, even in the US, so much of their sales volumes come from their own stores (from people who know no better) despite there being so few. I also freely admit that I have no way to verify the veracity of the aforementioned retention rates as they were posted on another board by an (ex/disgruntled?) GW employee that had worked (at least partially) on them. Scary numbers, none the less.

Living by one's own hubris is a sure recipie for failure. While I think such a fall on the face would be just desserts for the idiots running the company in the ground, I still love the Warhammer Fantasy and 40,000 universes and don't want to see them collapse. My only hope is the stockholders and/or other corporate directors will snap out of it and finally see the writting on the wall and make *positive* changes. Otherwise the future aint too bright...

I couldn't tell if he was leaving GW or not.  It was kind of cryptic.  It just said he was moving on.  But the editor threw in a "Steve's a helluva guy" addition.

Anyone else have an opinion on Steve's whereabouts?

I'm with you. I have a great love for collecting White Dwarf even though it always hasn't had fantastic content. But within the last few years, they've ditched absolutely EVERYTHING I can possibly even care about out of the magazine. What's sad is that I have a streak of all WDs back through issue #100 (this is an old picture, I have more since it was taken):

I am planning on sending a letter (not an email) to both the US and UK WD letting them know that I will no longer be purchasing their magazine because they have stopped carrying any useful content whatsoever.

*Battle Reports that don't actually show what happens in the battle are pointless wastes of space IMO.
*The designer notes have gotten less frequent and less informative.
*The new or trial rules have disappeared.
*New scenarios and/or campaigns have pretty much gone the way of the dodo.
*hell, they haven't even had a real tactics article by a tournament player in a long time.

What is left is really just a collection of hobby tips. . .all painting and conversions. While I do like a little of that, I certainly don't want to purchase a magazine just for painting and conversion tips.

It is quite frustrating, and I too really want to save WD.

I truly and honesly wish you both the best of luck in trying to get the powers that be to see the light and fix the 'Dwarf. My collection starts at issue 99 and, minus a couple years in the mid 90's and the most of the past two yeasr, I have just about every issue published in between and then some. Compared to the old school White Dwarfs, it's absolutely terrible these days. My sub ran out over two years ago and aside from the occasional issue that I've picked up mostly at random, they've done nothing to make it enticing much less vaulable enough to re-subscribe.

I hear you Yak!

And even the modeling content is much poorer these days... Where are the showcases of the best hobbyist armies? Where are the masterclass articles for painting that might actually help someone???

Where are writers/WDemployees with even SOME personality!!?

And who wants to see megaforce sets by eavymetal team in battle reports??? We want people's own, unique, passionately created armies fighting it out!

The wish list from readers has always been the same and the editors have made it clear they know these hopes and now all of a sudden the mag has turned into a salescatalogue which is utterly crap and has no soul what so ever.

I just received my WD 321 (US version) in the mail. This is the first issue I've received that did not come in a protective plastic bag. Of course this means that the front and back cover were damaged (thanks GW) as the USPS just crams it in the box.

Is this the GW shipping method now for all countries or just the US?

[rant]I know the USPS are the ones who damaged it, but really GW it's your fault for getting rid of the bag. You set it up to be damaged. Was the bag so expensive that it had to go? Was the cost of 5 cents per bag breaking the bank? Could you not justify the cost of the bag even though you obviously don't pay people to come up with quality content anymore? Could you point out the date you quit caring about customer service? Thanks. Signed...a soon to be "former subscriber to WD".[/rant]
