Howdy All,

The recent post on the "Page 3 Challenge" got me thinking.  Has anyone ever tried a 40k tourney with fixed lists?

I mean REAL fixed lists, meaning all players field the EXACT same list like:

All players must field the following army:

1 Librarian

2 10 Man Tactical Squads  (Each with flamer and lascannon)

1 Land Speeder

1 Predator Destructor with hvy bolter sponsons

(or something like the above)

If you made the requirements Space Marines (something nearly everyone has) and kept the list sizes small (to items most SM players own) MANY folks could field it.

Just a thought...

I think this would be a great idea for a tournament to find out exactly who the best player is. Forget composition. Forget painting scores. Find out who is the best tactician.

I've never seen a tournament like this before. The key to actually pulling it off is to pick the right army (Space Marines) and the right models (I'd go with Missile Launchers cos that's what comes as standard). You could even allow Chaos Marines to compete but just using the Space Marine codex (a basic army would translate easiliy and you'd probably double the number of players who could compete).

Always outnumbered but never outgunned.

It might even be fun to include a painting contest as part of it (but a separate prize from best general).

Painters would have to get creative to make their armies look different from the rest of the pack, since everyone has same models.

BTW, I like the missle launcher idea.

Bah, with the way 40k works, why not just do it with every codex as it's
released? With nothing to buy people check into all sorts of armies all the
time. And with a format like this you'd see more people getting involved
with specific armies rather than worry about meqs all the time.

Doing this with the Eldar Codex, for example, would be sure to churn up
some interest.

Yeah, it's kinda like a magic 'sealed deck' event. I could see it being lots of fun for new list releases. Although I'm not sure every player would want to build a little army for each new codex.

What an idea!!   I agree that although not everyone would play or want to build a small army, some would buy in.   I think if you made it cost prohibitive you could have problems, but if you went with the small battallion box and one additional unit, whatever GW decides to make it, that could be doable.

Plus, the game store would be able to do really awesome prize support if everything was bought through them.  Alternatively, they could give a small discount to everyone who signs up for the tourney and buys  the battalion box.

Cool idea Russ.

Sounds Fun if the people would be willing to spend the $$$ to build a formatted list Also it would be cool if there was a list for each army that way every player could take part. Could that be done? I have Necrons what would be a comparable list?

I've heard of people doing this as a side bet during tournaments (example, 5 guys will build the same list and take it to the same tourney to see how they do), but not as the format for the tournament itself.

I can't see it working as a method to see who's the better player.

By reducing the options and interactions of units, you've vastly simplified the game. This means that luck will become a much more significant factor than anything else. You've turned chess into checkers if you will.

Now, what might be interesting is a tournament with exactly one legal list for each codex. So you could play necrons, marines, Tau, etc. but you have to use the list for that codex.

Yea. I believe that is what Yak was saying but if not then I agree with that /\

That way you have you list and you KNOW what's coming. Gives you time to set a tactic, fine tune and see if it's better than the other guys!

Can you D.I.G. it?

What if you make it fixed lists based of the contents of the Battleforces? That way it is the most common models availible, and might stir interest in people starting new armies. The only downside would be that some Armies might be more effective than the other.

Current Armies: Blood Angels, Imperial Guard (40k), Skorne, Retribution (Warmachine), Vampire Counts (Fantasy)

I've seen it done in DBA where each table had fixed terrain and 2 preset armies. The players just move from table to table for their matchups. The armies & terrain & mission remain the same so player skill with the tools at hand should play a bigger part..

I really like Ed's idea. Call it "The Generals Tournament."
I'm thinking maybe two fairly simple lists for each army to add a little bit of variety. Maybe one army that leans a bit towards shoots, and one that leans a bit towards assault, but both are mostly in the middle (ie one uses shoota boys, one slugga boys, one marine army with Devestators, one with assault marines). That way you have just a bit of flexibility to add to the variety.

I've seen the Reaper Exarch with both weapon options and both look like things you can buy in sex shops. A weapon should not look like this, not even a Emperor's Children weapon. -Symbio Joe

One way to do it would be to use people's RTT and GT winning lists. Then people couldn't complain too much that their options were garbage.

"So now generals...choose your army!"...epic...i like it...

Maybe the shop owner could set up an army for every race, then poeple could participate by buying it with a discount.
Should be smaller games, though. maybe 1000pts.

I've pitched the idea before but don't know if anyone did it.

Since marines have a hard time hurting one another I would suggest it be IG instead. An IG army where you know there are no marines is a very different animal when it comes to playing.

Just allow players to sub any models they want as long as it is clear.

I love the idea of Iron General America.......
Chairman Russ: "Today's secret army is.........Blood Angels!!!!"
Announcer Yakface: "Ohh, Iron General Ed likes to get up close and personal with his armies, but the challenger Iron Kodiak is no stranger to assault armies."
Announcer Gonads: "This should be interesting to see how Iron Kodiak manages to put his Midwestern gamer flair on the gameplay, while Iron General Ed uses his patented East coast beat down technique."
Announcer Yakface: "This should be an epic matchup."
