Why do we do things when we know better?

So everyone knows I've been raggin' on the new Empire plastics. I think they suck. And I've got a closet full of older, unpainted Empire. And I bought myself the last box of halberdier/swordsmen in the store and gave it to my wife to wrap for me for Christmas.

So why then, did I, this afternoon, decide to buy the new Empire Army box? Yes, I want the army book- but it's $20 and will be available in a month! Yes, I want the general- but it's $22 and will be available in a month! And I had that much in store credit! Yet I went ahead and paid full $220 for the army box that contains mostly a bunch of stuff that I actively dislike, along with a bunch of stuff that I already have.

I did enjoy opening the big box and looking at all the little boxes, and opening all the little boxes and looking at the bits on the sprue, and handling the sprues, and asking my buddies if they didn't feel a little lighter and more brittle, like maybe GW was using cheaper plastic now?

The bad thing, the bad thing is, I'm not having any buyer's remorse. I like having this new army box, and I'm not taking it back, even though I don't actually like most of the contents. Like an addict who denies he has a problem.

It's that right there. Tough thing to break, but I found that when I started spending money on other things, stuff that I liked, i received the same joy, even if I spent more. Things like buying an inordinate amount of German WW2 Werhmacht in 15mm, enough to field a at least one regiment sized force using FoW's company level rules... Painted I have but a company done up... :s Likewise, I have a battalions's worth of unassembled Fallshirmjager, and two companies of British.

This doesn't even get into the ridiculous amounts of GW stuff I would buy for the sake of buying. This is what irks me the most about their pricing & drop in quality is that I know I'm not the only one that would faithfully buy the latest cool box/blister/whatever regardless if I needed it or not. I haven't spent more than $200 in over two years on GW's stuff because of that. Contrast with at least $4000 spent on historicals, Rackham, Reaper, and other figs and scale models in the same time period, many which still sit in their original boxes.

But, to answer your question: it's really just that happy feeling of getting to open the boxes of cool stuff and playing with them.

I do it too. I invent things to want just so I can buy them. I don't even realy want them. I like the idea of wanting them and when I get 'em I love it but then I want another thing.
I want one of everything.
I need to hit the lotto.

As a financially struggling college student, I'm glad I don't suffer from the same weakness. I'm already 10s of thousands of dollars in debt, so I guess I'm lucky.

Well the collective wisdom of the Miniatures Page is that you cannot die until you paint every model you own. So the more you buy the longer you'll live.

Of course if your mom/wife/kids throw out your unpainted lead then all bets are off.

wait'll you buy a house and get to be 100s of thousands of dollars in debt.

It makes those $17 special characters seem like a bargin.

That's interesting.
I have this feeling when I DON'T buy anything new, it's like an imaginary clap on the shoulder. "Hey dude, not bad, you resisted the urge to buy something you might regret afterwards and now you got 20 bucks "more".

Great feeling and you really appreciate the things you DO buy then...

I haven't been able to afford home improvements, but I can make the regular bills.

Somehow I think I'm going to have to have Patrick over to work on the roof. And I

I really wanted to buy the Eldar box, and now I don't even remember what was in it that I really wanted. Maybe the new wraithlord? It's a good thing I'm broke. I don't follow these crazy impulses when I'm broke. Like last summer, I had money, so I bought the Ogre Kingdoms batallion just for bits. Granted, it was when it just dropped in price $45, but still. I haven't put the actual ogres together yet. Maybe I just wanted to take advantage of the only GW price drop I can remember. I think I had temporary insanity from that shock.

PS- Schlepp, I just used your avatar in War! Tool beat Metallica in their approach to selling out. Basically.
