RE: UK matt varnnish spray cans

A similar question was asked over on The Warhammer Forums and the consensus was you can find Testors Dull Coat via Antenociti's Workshop. Dullcoat is good good stuff, though I know it tends to be hard to find in the UK due to restrictions shipping aerosol cans (they must go by ground/sea).

Krylon and Armory are also good, but I don't know their availability in the UK, but whatever you do, avoid the GW Hobby Supply spray as it has been plagued with problems. You can also check your local model shop and they should carry some sort of local or european brand matte varnish spray. Regardless of which brand you pick, be sure to follow the directions carefully. In particular, very thoroughly shake the can, spray only in low humidity and in the recommended temperature range.

As to stripping with dettol, I can't help you there! Good luck & enjoy!

If you're having difficulty buying matte spray varnish, you could always use the much more readily available automotive gloss varnish to seal your minis. Then grab some artists acrylic matt varnish and a big brush and just go all over them. Works very well for me, and much more cost effective as well.

Automotive varnish (Halfords) - GBP 6.99 for 500ml
Windsor & Newton Acrylic matte varnish - GBP 3.00 for quite a lot.

Dettol has been reported to be able to strip paint. Coke as well, in experiments. But they take forever (read: days) to be effective and are not really that great even then. You could always try Cillit oven cleaner (spraycan available in Sainsbury's). I've not tested it on plastics, but it strips acrylics off beautifully.

RE: UK matt varnnish spray cans

Has anyone had experience spraying the dullcoat straigth over finish models? According to the website that Narly posted they say you have to apply dull coat over a gloss varnish? I hate gloss and would be really hesistant to do this. Does it actually work and dull it down to make it matt?

Any adivce or tips?

Cheers

RE: UK matt varnnish spray cans

the reason you gloss varnish the model then dullcoat it is because the dullcoat offers next to 0 protection for the model. I give my models an ample coat of Ardcoat, let it dry completely, then an even covering of dullcoat to take the shine away. Ardcoat is a great protector, and the dullcoat gives a great finish.

RE: UK matt varnnish spray cans

deitpike has the gist of it: matte finishes are not particularly protective. I use a final coat of undiluted Future Floor Finish (essentially liquid acrylic, I think in the UK it's called Klear?), it's essentially liquid acrylic and dries to a glossy finish. Testor's Glosscote is good for applying a protective seal too. Once the gloss coat is dry/cured, the matte finish will indeed actually work and dull it down to make it matte. Happy sealing!
