I'm a film guy, and last year three Spanish speaking directors put out Babel (Innaritu), Pan's Labyrinth (del Toro), and Children of Men (Cuaron). They are also friends and a defacto support group for one another, pushing and pushing and pushing each other to be better. This is unlike the Hollywood system which is heavily stovepiped and business-driven. The three directors argue that bickering back and forth and fighting with each other makes their films better. I, as a fan/spectator, agree. So it's nice to see the American painters decide to use the competition and each other to push the visual artistry of the hobby. Not that every year needs a "theme" to get the big guns involved in the mix, but hopefully this is the start of some good-natured competition between the group, because it's only good for the fans
