Alternate GW models in a Empire Army

Ok, so here is my issue. I love the Chaos Warrior models, but from everything i read they are not worth the points to field them...and that would be one of the main reasons i would play Chaos. So i think i will start up an empire army, but i hate the state trooper models. My solution, shave off the chaos markings from the warriors and use them for my various state trooper units. Do you think people would have a problem with this?

You would have to ask the group you normally play with. However, the main problems I see are that Chaos Warriors are quite armored for light armor + shield infantry and that Chaos Warriors are on 25mm bases and State Troops use the 20mm bases. If you can get them to work, I'd love to see it, it sounds like an interesting idea.

If you don't intend to play your army at a GW store (because they'll get shirty with you) I would have a look on the wargamesfoundry website. They have some lovely 28mm late medieval and renaissance models that look great and don't cost that much.

Craig

Heck, leave them on if they are a cult group; paint the flagellants as crazed cultists and the war altar as a Chaos shrine

It does look a bit heavy for light armor, but swap out the heads and weapons and it will probably be fine. Heck, you could paint the armor like copper or bronze and explain that while heavy, the metal is much softer.... Make some fine mercenary looking troops that way.

Fitting on 20mm bases might be tough. Perhaps mount them at an angle?

Alternate GW models in a Empire Army

Try them on those 40mm squares - all you have to worry about it that noone is swinging an axe past the front of it and you can mount such models in more dynamic poses than modular 20mm bases.

While Chaos Armour looks way too heavy for State Troopers proper, it would look fine as full plate. (As I recall it's just the Greatswords and Knights who wear this.) There's a pretty nice two-handed sword in the Militia box and that also gives you plenty of scruffy looking mercenary heads. CW in my opinion would look a little weird as Empire crossbowmen or hand gunners, but could make reasonable looking spearmen, pistoliers or swordsmen.

Possibly leave off the shields? Heavy armour is only as good as light armour and shield anyways, except for that parry bonus - just play it as the same thing with a "Practised Swordsman" rule or something that functions as "counts as"/handwaving their gear. (though they lack sheilds these guys are so skilled with their blades they still get the parry bonus etc.)

Personally I think Chaos Warriors took a step down with the new box - I loved the old chainmailed hunchbacks from the 6th edition box with posable limbs. The fur mantles on the new cloaks however could look fairly Ulricky if painted a proper shade of white. And who know what weird substances drip from the walls of the passages honeycombing the natural rocky shell of Middenheim?...
