But in a random pickup game or a tournament match, it’d make me a bit unhappy. It looks like laziness/unwillingness to buy and properly represent the unit, regardless of what your actual motivation is.

If you were building a spider-themed army, with lots of conversions, AND were not fielding the actual spider-rider unit for some reason (thus avoiding confusion about which spider riders were which), I’d swallow it more easily, but even then I’d wonder why you weren’t using the actual proper unit rules.

I play an all Night Goblin Army and use Spiders as Wolf Riders. The trick is that I don't have any Spider Riders in my list so ther eis no confusion. I have the units converted up so that it is Night Goblins riding them. I figure that, living in caves, the Night Goblins are more likely to ride spiders than wolves.

Point of that ramble, if you don't mix the units into a list then I see no issue for it. You are using them as a counts as, and as long as they are modeled differently than, straight out of the box, Spider Riders you should be fine. You could convert them somehow, make them meaner looking, or make your normal spiders based in forest terrain and your wolves on plains terrain.

Even if you replace the top of the Wolf Riders with NGs it looks out of place due to the lack of robes on the bottom half.
