Deceiver's Grand Illusion-on Reserves?

The Deceiver's Special ability 'Grand Illusion' reads:
"A Necron army commanded by the Deceiver may adjust its deployment after the enemy army has deployed but before the first move. This option is exercised after all Infiltrators, Scouts, etc. have moved. The Necron player nominates a unit and rolls a d6. On a 1-3, the units may be redeployed, subject to the deployment rules for the mission. On a 4-6, the unit may be repeployed subject to the deployment rules for the mission and a further unit can then be nominated" (Necron Codex, p 30).

So here's the question. Can I deploy my monolith in reserves, and then, using Grand Illusion, pull it out of reserves and redeploy it on the board, or vice versa? While I'm interested in how you read the RAW, I'm also curious as to whether or not this would just be too incredibly cheesy to be considered fair. Your thoughts?

Deceiver's Grand Illusion-on Reserves?

Interesting question. My inclination is to say no. The reason behind this is that the grand illusion states that the unit may be redeployed and units that are held in reserves have not been deployed in the first place. Now in order to check up on this line of reasoning, you should probably check the reserve rules. If they say something along the lines of "Instead of being deployed, units may be held in reserves..." then this would be the case. If the reserve rules say something like "Units may be deployed in reserves and brought in on subsequent turns..." then I would be incorrect and you would be able to pull things out of reserves with the grand illusion.

So go take a look at the reserve rules (and the deep strike rules for that matter) and see how they are worded.

Deceiver's Grand Illusion-on Reserves?

Good call. When in doubt, read the rules.

Wording for Reserves says: "Units in reserve are not deployed at the start of the battle, but will become available in later turns of the game." Since they are not deployed, one would assume they cannot be REdeployed. It would then follow that if a unit has been deployed, it cannot be redeployed back into reserves, due to the definition of Reserves.

Another brilliant tactic squashed by logic.

E'dain wrote:Another brilliant tactic squashed by logic.

A sad state of affairs, but it does seem to be the case. Good thinking though to come up with the idea in the first place.
