Daemons: "magic" items per army

The Daemon Army book states that the daemon gifts are 'not magic items...' There is a specific ruling that each daemon can only have 1 gift, but there are no other restrictions for gifts or icons. This leads me to: "I have 3 Units of Horrors. Can I have 3x Banners of Change?"

Re:Daemons: "magic" items per army

Notice that it's only "gifts" that are not magic items, and presumably can be treated like vampire bloodline powers (i.e., can be duplicated within an army).

The description of Demonic Icons on p.95 doesn't contain the limitations the Demonic Gifts entry contains on page 92 (no immunities to spells or abilities), but it doesn't explicitly designate demonic icons as magic or mundane items.

Assuming that they are magic items, the relevant rule would be the 4th paragraph in the main rule book on "Magic Items" ("No specific magic item can be carried by more then one model in the army"). Since magic items that are exceptions to this rule are explicitly stated (e.g. gnoblar thiefstones from the Ogre Kingdoms army book, Skaven Warpstone Tokens), in the absence of a rule to the contrary, icons appear subject to the general rule.

No doubt, however, there are those that will point out that demonic icons are not listed as magic items, and thus are no more restricted then other articles from the armory (q.v., Skaven Warp-Blades).

Soo... like Invocation of Nehek, there is what it looks like they meant (that they are magic banners) and what is supported by RAW.

Edit: Note that not everyone agrees with my assessment of what the developers meant; in Dr. Who's excellent review the good doctor seems to believe icons are intended to be non-unique.

Then how does one explain the entries for the basic daemons?

Shouldn't it say only "one unit" can upgrade to the icon/standard if it is limited to one rather than leaving the entry open ended to suggest multiple upgrades?

nikeforever22 wrote:Then how does one explain the entries for the basic daemons?

Shouldn't it say only "one unit" can upgrade to the icon/standard if it is limited to one rather than leaving the entry open ended to suggest multiple upgrades?

Unfortunately, the way the Army book is written supports both interpretations: if demonic icons are magic banners, then there is no need for any additional text, since the general rule of no duplication applies. If demonic icons are not magic banners, then, again, no additional text is needed.

To be clear, under RAW you can take multiples of demonic icons (except the battle standard only ones, of course).

There is absolutely nothing to indicate that Daemonic Icons are Magic Banners. It is pretty clear that multiple units can have the same icon as there is permission withing the unit entries to do so. Nothing written can prove that they are magic banners.

I agree with Negativemoney. Icons are not magic banners and there is no rule indicating they are limited to one per army. So, as much as I don't like it, you could take your 3 Tzeentch icons. Indeed, the example lists on the GW site make use of multiple of the same icon. http://us.games-workshop.com/games/warhammer/daemons/gaming/armylists/2.htm

(Of course, the example is hardly definitive and GW has made blunders before, but it is some evidence.)

They arent magic banners, but check the rules on taking them. Above the their listings, if Im not mistaken, it says that each banner can only be taken once per army or something like that.

That is not present at all.

The only restrictions on one per army are the BSB banners. This is because the army can only have 1 BSB.

So yes you can have as many Siren Standards as you have units of Daemonettes and Seekers of Slaanesh.
