Re:Black Templers Army 1750

I don't know... it seems a little too one-dimensional. You're giving your opponent only 4 targets. Something about that doesn't sit well with me.

Thinking about 5th: With some spacing of sacrificial units, I think you could lose all your specialist guys to shooting. So I think you shouldn't drop your grenades and add a grenade-less sqaud. There won't be any higher priority target than those weapons.

Your potential 21" move by your chaplain squad could get cut real short by some small meaningless squads. Hopefully those small squads can get doused in bolter fire before the assault, but with 4+ cover saves-a-plenty it seems a bit too dicey to rely on the shooting solely from your troop squads.

It's close but a quick glance at a 56 pt squad of tau auxiliaries (my speedbumb) behind cover in range of all the bolter shots of one moving squad...odds say you will kill 4 men and I would have to make a Ld 8(-1) moral test. I like my odds of a 56 pt unit giving me another round of shooting on a 457 pt unit.

I just think you'll definitely make your opponent react to you instead of the other way around--which is good. But I think a train stuck on one track can be easy to derail.

60 models of BT is impressive, but I sense many draws in your future.

My suggestions would be to free up some points, get a dread or two that can follow the squads and give supporting fire against small squads, MCs, and tanks. Either that or some Landspeeder tornados with Heavy flamers to weed out those frail units shooting from a 4+ cover save.

Oh. You like drop armies.

That should give you an early tactical edge with the way deployment is going to work. You won't get any downside to deploying first and then getting the first turn, and you can go for the first turn initiative steal thingy with a clear conscience.

They should be fun to play.

Black Templers Army 1750

Ghostmaker, Black Templars are not all that great as a Drop Pod army. The real winners of that style is Cleanse and Purify DIY Marines.

I would recommend the following 1750 Points Army List:

Grimaldus - 195
Master of Sanctity w/ Holy Orb of Antioch, Terminator Honors, 3 Cenobytes, Bolt Pistol, Frag Grenades - 167
Emperor's Champion w/ Accept Any Challenge - 140

Crusader Squad (10 Init, 10 Neo) w/ Power Fist, Meltagun - 285
Crusader Squad (10 Init, 10 Neo) w/ Power Fist, Meltagun - 285
Crusader Squad (10 Init, 10 Neo) w/ Power Fist, Meltagun - 285
Crusader Squad (10 Init) w/ Power Fist, Meltagun, Frag Grenades - 195
Crusader Squad (10 Init) w/ Power Fist, Meltagun, Frag Grenades - 195

* * * * *

1747 Points. 89 Models.

Grimaldus is the ultimate force multiplier. Taking him in an army not only gives you a 6" Fearless bubble with which you may sally forth into the enemy lines, undaunted, but he also comes with a Relic, 3 Cenobytes, and a nice little extra shooty attack in place of the other Master of Sanctity's Holy Hand Grenade. Even against units that will instakill him in close combat, it is extremely (1/12) difficult to keep him from swinging, and from his squad gaining the ability to reroll failed to-hit dice. I'm not sure how that will work in 5th when the army will be re-rolling to hit with Preferred Enemy, but either way, he's well worth taking over another Master of Sanctity with an identical loadout, especially for the measly extra 28 points.

Stick Grimaldus in a 20-man Squad.

The Master of Sanctity functions exactly as Grimaldus would, sans the Fearless Bubble and Relic. He has an HOA instead of a MC Plasma Pistol (they'll both probably get in only one turn of shooting all game, anyway), and has 3 Wounds instead of 2 with an Ld9 Resurrect.

Stick the Master of Sanctity in a 20-man Squad.

The Emperor's Champion is, point for point, one of the toughest models in the game in Assault. Having a W2, A3 model with Str6, WS6 Power Weapon attacks at Initiative 5 that are Preferred Eenmy is downright nasty. He is not a heavyweight like a Demon Prince, by any means, but he does give your entire army Preferred Enemy for 50 extra points. He also had Ld10 and Crusader Seals, which makes him a handy "super-sergeant" for your third and final fatty Crusader Squad.

Stick the Emperor's Champion in a 20-man Squad.

The 20-man Crusader Squads are the bread and butter of this list. They sport a large model count, Righteous Zeal (either Automatically with Fearless Chaplains or Ld10 with the Champion), and a cool 39 Attacks in close combat. The Power Fist (as well as the attached HQ's Power Weapon attacks) lets you deal with big nasties, while the Meltagun keeps unwanted vehicles at bay (for the most part).

Though powerful and fast (especially with 9" Zeal and Run), these are not finesse units. Pick a target (usually the closest) and go straight at it. Kill it, move to the next. These squads are likely going to get mauled throughout the game, so don't count on them as objective takers. View them as living walls of guns and swords. Don't expect them to survive, and you should be fine with them.

Keep in mind though that these units should not, under any circumstances, be used to go tankhunting or MC-killing. Doing so will waste time and models. Let the big stuff come to you. The only situation where it is advantageous to intercept said big-nasties is if they're going after your smaller squads. I'll explain why in the next paragraph.

Your 10-man Crusader Squads will be used as objective grabbers or reinforcement blocks. In games where all you have to do is kill, them run them alongside Grimaldus for the Fearless boost. The extra 20 models will definitely help out.

If you're using them as objective grabbers (their primary purpose, IMHO), keep them out of sight and held back. Let your big squads advance in a blob on the enemy, while your small squads trickle into position. Make sure that they are as non-threatening as possible - the idea being based off of one of Murphy's Laws:

"Try to look unimportant; the enemy may be low on ammo."

This, coupled with the fact that you're rushing your opponent with 69 models, and you are likely to find that they divert very little fire from your main force. If your opponent is objective conscious and goes after the units, then force him to concentrate on your bigger squads by interrupting firing lanes and rushing his shooting units.

Force your opponent to sweat a little. Make him dance around your big squads and he'll soon lose sight of the small units. Keep on the offensive. Attack, attack, and your opponent will likely be too busy reacting to your wall of Assaulty death to notice a few inconspicuous objective grabbers until it is too late to do anything.

If your opponent is Assaulty as well, then all the better. Black Templars are hard-pressed to find an enemy that can outdo them in Close Combat, and with 89 Assault-oriented models in your army, you'll find that the Carapace armor in some of your squads doesn't matter that much, especially since you'll be absolutely raping whatever you fight in H2H.

* * * * *

In sum:

Against shooty, run the three 20-man Squads with attached Characters, grab objectives with the two 10-man Squads. Keep on the offense, draw attention from the small squads to the big squads. Force your opponent to react. He either shoots your big stuff or gets Assaulted to death.

Against assaulty, run everythin at the enemy in one big blob. Draw out the Assaults, use the Relic as a linchpin move. BT win the CC-attrition game. Use that to your advantage.

Hope that helps.

CK
