5th ed Escalation League - 500 pts Eldar

Ok, so we're starting a 500 pt Escalation league this weekend to celebrate 5th ed's launch. Yay!

Being new to all this after about 8 years of being out of the loop, here's what I came up with:

Farseer (55)	HQ - 98 pts
Guide (20), Mind War (20), Singing Spear (3)

Dire Avenger x10	Troop - 152 pts
Exarch w/Avenger Shuri-cat (17), Bladestorm (15)

Guardians x10	Troop - 100 pts
Eldar Missile launcher	(20)

Dark Reapers x3	Hvy Spt - 147 pts
Exarch w/Tempest launcher (32), Crackshot (10)

Total Points- 497
========================
I had given the Farseer Guide, and was left with 23 pts. I figure Guide/Mind War would give me options depending on the situation.

Dark Reapers for the fire support of course, as well as the EML in the Guardian unit. Would that be better off as a Scatter Laser maybe?

I am told that just about every faction will be represented, but that there are usually more Marine/CSM players than anything else, so I would guess that would be my most likely opponent (though not guaranteed).

Any suggestions/thoughts? Anything I'd be better off spending my points on?

Thank you for reading.

Well, unless one of us made a mistake you were slightly wrong about your DA squad (the exarch has the dual cats) for the points listed (doesn't change anything just thought I'd point that out ). I gave the reaper exarch an EML because with fast shot you've got two missile shots so can have fun insta killing ICs, taking out the occasional tank or MC, or for thinning out hordes. Giving the Farseer Doom and Guide gives you a lot more flexibility with your squads and greatly increases their killing capabilities. To answer your question, yes, in general for those small point games, a Scatter Laser is your jack of all trades.

500 Pts - Eldar Roster - Unnamed

HQ: Farseer (1#, 103 Pts)
1 Farseer @ 103 Pts
Psyker; Doom ; Guide ; Fleet; Ghost Helm (GH); Rune Armour (RAmr); Shuriken Pistol (Sp); Singing Spear (SSpr)

Troops: Dire Avengers (10#, 152 Pts)
9 Dire Avengers @ 152 Pts
Fleet; Avenger S-Catapult (ASC)
1 Dire Avenger Exarch @ []Pts
Fleet; Bladestorm (BS); 2 Avenger SC

Troops: Guardian Squad (10#, 95 Pts)
0 Guardian Squad @ 95 Pts
Fleet
10 G Defender Squad @ [] Pts
Shuriken Catapult (SCat) (x10)
1 Weapon Platform @ [] Pts
Scatter Laser (SctL)

Heavy Support: Dark Reapers (3#, 147 Pts)
2 Dark Reapers @ 147 Pts
Reaper Launcher (RL)
1 Dark Reaper Exarch @ [] Pts
Fast Shot (FS); Missile Launcher (ML)

Total Roster Cost: 497

Cadian16th wrote:I gave the reaper exarch an EML because with fast shot you've got two missile shots so can have fun insta killing ICs, taking out the occasional tank or MC, or for thinning out hordes.

I would never give my reaper exarch a missile launcher. You can get 2 templates that ignore cover and reroll wounds by buying a tempest launcher and crack shot instead. In addition, if you are shooting at tanks, you are wasting the very valuable AP3 troop killing power from the rest of the reaper squad. Its just not the reaper's place to go after tanks. Stick with the tempest launcher and crack shot and you'll be better off.

Your farseer, however, could use some work. Where are you planning to have this guy? If he is back with the dark reapers, then mind war is a complete waste since you'll never be in range to use it. If, on the other hand, you are going to be running up front with the dire avegers, then you may want to consider doom rather than guide. Lets look at why:

10 Avengers shooting with blade storm => 30 shots and 20 hits
vs T4, 20 hits => 10 wounds
vs T3, 20 hits => 13.3 wounds
10 Avengers shooting with blade storm and guide => 30 shots and 26.6 hits
vs T4, 26.6 hits => 13.3 wounds
vs T3, 26.6 hits => 17.7 wounds
10 Avengers shooting with blade storm and doom => 30 shots and 20 hits
vs T4, 20 hits => 15 wounds
vs T3, 20 hits => 17.7 wounds

So if you are fighting anything that's toughness 4, you are better off with doom than guide. If you are going up against a T3 army, then its the same either way. However, the side bonus of doom is that it affects the enemy unit, so anything shooting them that turn gets the benifit of the power as opposed to just one unit for guide. Of course, this only works when you farseer is up with your forward units. Doom has yet another benifit to it over guide that you'll want to consider as well...it can be used in hand to hand. Fortune and also be used in that situation, so perhaps a better mix would be doom and fortune rather than guide and mind war.

Once we expand to 750-1000, his role might very well change.

The reason I took Mind War was because of the points bind I found myself in. Looking at my original list, without Mind War, I had 23 points to play with, and Mind War seemed like a decent choice to give the Farseer an option in case something (or somethings) got too close to the Reapers. I could have taken 2 more Guardians instead, with 7 points left over... would you recommend I do that instead of taking the extra power?

Phoenix wrote:
10 Avengers shooting with blade storm => 30 shots and 20 hits
vs T4, 20 hits => 10 wounds
vs T3, 20 hits => 13.3 wounds
10 Avengers shooting with blade storm and guide => 30 shots and 26.6 hits
vs T4, 26.6 hits => 13.3 wounds
vs T3, 26.6 hits => 17.7 wounds
10 Avengers shooting with blade storm and doom => 30 shots and 20 hits
vs T4, 20 hits => 15 wounds
vs T3, 20 hits => 17.7 wounds

So if you are fighting anything that's toughness 4, you are better off with doom than guide.
5th ed Escalation League - 500 pts Eldar

Hummm...actualy, what might be best is to ditch mind war and one dire avenger and pick up another reaper (assuming you have the models to pull that off).

Other than that, if your farseer is going to be back field I would scrap mind war and the singing spear in favor of more front line troops (3 extra guardians perhaps). It's not likely to be a huge deal one way or the other, but the guardians are more likely to see some use than mind war or the singing spear are. In either case, you'll have to play around a bit with the points and with what models you have to work with.

Aye, I do indeed have some more Reapers, and that's an excellent idea.

How does this look to you?

Farseer (55) HQ - 78 pts
Guide (20), Singing Spear (3)

Dire Avenger x9 Troop - 140 pts
Exarch w/Avenger Shuri-cat (17), Bladestorm (15)

Guardians x10 Troop - 100 pts
Eldar Missile launcher (20)

Dark Reapers x4 Hvy Spt - 182 pts
Exarch w/Tempest launcher (32), Crackshot (10)

Total Points- 500 on the nose (unless I screwed up my math somewhere).

How does that look? Or would you suggest adding 4 Guardians instead of the extra Reaper?

Thanks.
