Is set up for character killing and killing multiwound models. 5th edition makes him even better as he is better at killing vehicles in combat. I am considering giving him Warp Blast but in an earlier discussion missing half the time it seemed not worth it that the 2+ save is better.

Walking Tyrant - Venom cannon and devourers good for poping lower av vehicles as well as shooting infantry, I give him the a guard to increase survivability. Sticking with the Venom Cannon for now it provides some range for him.

Elites
Daka Fexes - the standard,

Troops
Gene stealers - always give them extended carapace for the extra save. skuttlers is nice to get a charge in sooner and flesh hooks for striking enemies in cover or going up buildings. pretty expensive but pretty deadly as well. Scuttlers seems even better as you can come in from board edges now in 5th edition. Shock troops for assaulting.

Spinegaunts - my objective holders, they are scoring to the last gaunt so I have without number so they come back if they die. Might be bad for giving up kill points. Should I go 3 units of 8? I was thinking 12 was about the least I want to field.

Heavy Support
Gun fexes - pretty standard, keeping the old config for now. twin linked barb strangler seemed like it was not worth it being str 8 only and the scatter must suck. use them to keep tanks shaken.

Zoanthropes - mainly for warp blast, the str 10 shot although it only has 18 range can actually penetrate so is needed against high av vehicles since the venom canon only can glance especially in 5th edition with glances really sucking at -2 on unified damage table. Also really necessary for synapse now that I fielding Gaunts.

My play style depends on what the opponents army and terrain is largely. tend to spread out hiding in terrain and try to get in assault as fast as I can taking minimal fire. I do sometimes make the monstrous creature wall if there is no template weapons on the opposing side and they bunch up.

Thinking I might cut a Dakka fex for more gaunts for another scoring unit or cut down on upgrades for stealers.

Also considering trying Lictors again but if they have to take a Dangerous terrain test when they deep strike that is not so good. Also hard to drop a dakka fex for a lictor or two.

The larger your spine gaunt squads are, the less likely you will be to get any use out of "without number". If you are going for large squads, ditch "without number" and just add in more gaunts. If you really want them to be ablative, then just have them run as small squads. You can always just have them hang back in kill point missions since there will be no objectives to take anyway.

I actually disagree on the extended carapace on the genestealers...it used to be vitally important but I've found them to be about as equally survivable in 5th without them. If you're clever you can keep them in cover almost always until it's too late. And when they win their combat they'll be out in the open no matter what you do.

It's a really good way to save some points and put them someplace else.

1750 competitive tyranids for 5th edition

Kirika wrote:
Troops
7 x Gene Stealer 168
Extended Carapace, Scuttlers, Flesh hooks

EC why? In Nidzilla, stealers go BEHIND the big guys (COVER SAVE) and only run forward to counter-assault. Nidzilla is a shooting army, not an assault army. Even in 4th they did this, hiding behind and bouncing forward to assault approaching assault troops.

Kirika wrote:
12 Spinegaunts 96
Spinefists, Without Number

The jury is out on without number. Can you use it sneak back onto the table in a weird place and score?

Kirika wrote:
3 x Zoanthrope 195
Warp Blast + Synapse

Zoes are there for Pyschic Scream. Triple or quad scream (it all stacks and tyrant can have it) means -4 to enemy morale + massive casualties from carnifex shooting = broken squads, falling back.

Kirika wrote:
Flying Melee tyrant

Actually I agree on this. You must have implant attack or he isn't scary. Oh you do, that's good. He's the A-Team, he just goes where he's needed to keep the assault troops away from your Carnifexes.

Kirika wrote:
Gene stealers - always give them extended carapace for the extra save. skuttlers is nice to get a charge in sooner

Repeat after me. NIDZILLA IS NOT AN ASSAULT ARMY. STEALERS ARE THERE TO PROTECT THE CARNIFEX GUNLINE FROM POWERFISTS so that the Carnifexes, aided by Psychic Scream, can shoot the enemy off the table. Which they will do, in about 3 turns.

Kirika wrote:
My play style depends on what the opponents army and terrain is largely. tend to spread out hiding in terrain and try to get in assault as fast as I can taking minimal fire. I do sometimes make the monstrous creature wall if there is no template weapons on the opposing side and they bunch up.

Oh god no. With nidzilla you deploy in a huge wedge with gaunts behind the big guys, you march up the centre of the table, and you shoot the living daylights out of anything that comes within 18". (Well that's the basic principle of it). If someone tries to assault YOU (which they will, as that's how you beat Nidzilla without mobile firepower) that's when the Stealers rush forward and bounce them. When I lose, it's because someone whacked the Stealers then covered my carnifexes in powerfist-wielding Marines. If they can't manage that, the Carnifexes gun down their whole army pretty darn quick.

[Although I actually use Raveners and a melee Tyrant since I can't lose a shooting fight except vs a necron with 10 destroyers and 6 heavy destroyers. it only takes 2 raveners to deepstrike and take out an emplaced devastatoe squad at the other end of the table ... you just deepstrike, they can't split their fire, so can only kill 1, then they eat rending claw... then you hide and score (only in 5th you can't score, but you can stop them scoring)]

EC could be a waste of point because of 5th, but it can help you for surviving melee fighting and repaid bolter fire.

Question: Is that an optional for Scuttler Stealers on reserve or not? and how it works on 5th?
1750 competitive tyranids for 5th edition

I must agree with everyone here, though I will attempt to be less flame-y about it.

Stealers need Talons, not EC in 5th, and feeder tendrils. With FT, stealers have almost the same chance to rend as 4th ed ones. With Talons, they have a better chance than 4th ed EC only stealers and are about the same points.

4th ed EC FH 7 stealers 21 attacks, 3-4 rends.

5th ed ST, FT, FH 7 stealers, 28 attacks, 24 hits, 4-5 rends

the 5th ed stealers are one point more, I belive. I may be mistaken as I don't have my nid book on me right now.

why VC? It seems that Glancing as not really useful anymore, and the low AP of the VC makes it not very useful vs MC's either. Id go with another Strangler for the twin, linked effect, or maybe strangler, devourer, rahter than the 4th ed, BS, VC.

I also agree that the zoanthropes have the wrong loadout. Psychic scream is a force multiplier that cannot be ignored. with a -4 or -5 to their leadership, you can make anything that is not fearless run with one round of shooting.
