Some tournaments never allowed them, but I say Kroot mercenaries are still a valid army list. Nothing in their rules has so significantly been altered by any rules in the Codex: Tau or the core rulebook.

White Dwarf armylists are all in that vague limbo of is it valid or isn't it. Different tournaments have different rules. Most friendly games are open to the unique and interesting armies; after you've played every army in the store a couple of times anything different can be a breath of fresh air.

I say yes to Kroot, yes to Feral orks! Until the official GW nerf batter beats us all outside the head.

Kroot mercinaries still legal?

I would say Kroot are valid until Tau get a codex upgrade (where I bet it gets sucked in). Since Kroot sit on top of the Tou core codex, if the Tau codex is still legit then so should kroot.

Feral Orks are not valid because they sit on top of the 3rd/4th codex for rules. There are too many differences in force org and units.

Now I could Proxy most of the models into existing rules except for the squiggoth models. Also, there are lots of Burnaz that would have to be remodeled as Nobs in Feral ork land could get burnaz. Pretty much all the boyz would end up as regular boyz instead of brute boyz or madboyz.

BTW, I ran Feral orks in a GT once. I could have swore I have seen Kroot in GT too.

Re:Kroot mercinaries still legal?

As a longtime Kroot player, I would have to say that the list is no longer legal. There are just too many inconsistencies between the list as-written and fifth edition. Plus, I have been absolutely destroying opponents using Kroot in fifth edition due to the fact that every standard mission uses infiltrate and out-flank and that Kroot going to ground in woods over an objective get a 2+ cover save. I've tried to tell them to use more flamers, but they insist the list is broken in fifth edition. It really comes down to the fact that I can have the entire list out-flank and come on the board with either jumppacks, fleet, or cavalry before they even get shot at. It's like a droppod list that can assault the turn it comes in.

Mind you, I'm having a blast playing them due to all the arse-kickins I got during third and fourth edition.

I've read various tourneys do not allow the Kroot Merc list. I guess it all depends on what your preference for play is like (casual pick up games or tourneys).

Kroot Mercs aren't the only army that can out-flank/deep strike/reserves. My first tourney came against an all Genestealer army that tried to out-flank.

My Eldar can nearly do the same, except come in on a 2+ on turn 2.

Define legal?

For GTs, Rogue Trader/local tournaments, leagues and campaigns: ask the organizer/store.

For playing with your mates at the FLGS or in your basement: check with your mates.

From a completely abstract perspective, there are a lot of armies running around with 3rd ed. codicies (Necrons, Dark Eldar, Space Wolves, Daemonhunters, IG, Witch Hunters...) and WD lists (Blood Angels). Why shouldn't they be legal as well? Since 5th ed. didn't come with a "Ravening Hordes" style packet of army lists, nor has there been any statement that un-updated codicies are invalid, why would we assume that Kroot are illegal?

However, at the end of the day, I stand by my original statement: who cares if it's legal in Muncie if you play in Kokomo? As long as your group and local scene is okay with it, go for it. And if they don't, look at that: they're orks!
