Question about "Overrun"

I'm a little unclear about how "Overrun" works. I know a unit can only do an "Overrun" move when they wipe a unit that they charged in close combat.

So.. Does this mean that a unit that charged an enemy unit and broke it-pursued it-caught it (effectively wiping it out) is entitled to an "overrun" move after the pursuit is finished?

Question about "Overrun"

No. an Overrun is simply a pursuit move that is done when you have completely destroyed your opponent's unit in close combat. Basically if it comes to the flee and pursuit part of the combat and there is nothing standing in front of you, then you are able to make an Overrun move. This can only be done how ever on the same turn in which the unit charged and can only be done once per turn.

Question about "Overrun"

As in before any roll is made to determine the pursuit distance.

If there are no models in BtB at this time you may overrun otherwise you may only pursue.

If you wipe out a unit due to a pursuit roll you only go the distance that was rolled and in the direction that the unit would have gone in if he had fled (this is very important).

An overrun is a move in the direction of your charge (ie. keep going strait forward with no turns allowed).

That is the difference between the two.

Question about "Overrun"

In 5th Edition, it used to be that if you charged an enemy and wiped them out, you had to stay put as there was no fleeing enemy to pursue.

Overrun was added in 6th edition to prevent Goblin speed bumps.

Overrun is an alternative to pursuit - either you pursue (because you broke the enemy) or you overrun (because you wiped them out).

You cannot do both.

Question about "Overrun"

In case it wasn't specifically stated, your unit does not HAVE to take an overrun if its opponents were all killed. They may elect to just stand there instead, with no need to take a Ld test or anything. For instance, if overruning would possibly move the unit into a position where another enemy unit could flank them, you can just not roll the dice and hold position (but you can't decide to hold after rolling the dice to see how far they'll go).

Troops with Hatred or Frenzy have to overrun though IIRC, no choice to stand there.

- Salvage
