Tyranids: All-around or specialists

You see a lot of tyranid armies on here that are either close combat heavy or shooting heavy, is there something to be said for a balance of the two?

I'm thinking 3 CC carnifexes up front and 3 long range fexes in the back. Rippers running forward with some guants hiding on objectives in the back. Either 2 fexes moving forward or 1 moving forward and 1 hanging back and shooting.

Let me know what you think about running a more all around list.

Cogito

Re:Tyranids: All-around or specialists

Tyranids, particularly their monstrous creatures, generally don't do very well when they have split roles. Let's look at your Hive Tyrant: Scything Talons, Venom Cannon, triple Guards. Is he standing 36" away to shoot those three VC shots? Or is he right in the thick of things? Three Guards are very excessive if he's a long range shooter, and there are better guns than the Venom Cannon for close-ranged firepower (Devourer comes to mind). Talons only help you when in close combat, totally wasted at all other times when you could have more guns. Back to the Guards, I say they are excessive because at three feet away and only having three shots a round and 10 T6, 3+ armor wounds, it really isn't worth shooting at. Also, all of the melee capabilities of the Guard are totally useless, you're just paying 135 points for 6 wounds. For the same price, you could almost get another Tyrant! Pick a role for your Tyrant: Long Range, Mid Range, or Assault. Then stick to it and get the proper biomorphs and weapons for that role.

You might want to consider Acid Maw for the Retinue Genestealers. The combination of re-roll misses and wounds is amazing for these guys. You also might want to consider +1S for the Broodlord, since S6 is much better for wounding random T5 things (Plague Marines, various HQs, etc.) than S5 is, and wounds count for everything since he's a walking power weapon.

Having three assault fexes will likely scare some opponents, others will just throw a tarpit in your way and move on to more important targets. However, if you're playing any Tank-Heavy armies this is a great way to go since they will either do everything in their power to kill all three, thus leaving the rest of your army to kill them, or they will ignore them and your assault fexes will have a nice metallic lunch. For troop-heavy lists, though, a Dakkafex is the way to go.

Your Genestealers look fine, but you might want to consider Feeder Tendrils, they're too good not to take for only 1 point a model.

A termagaunt is a Gaunt with the Fleshborer, not Spinefist. That's a Spinegaunt.

Your Sniperfexes look fine, just remember to count them as lurking while in cover and away from Synapse. 3+ cover saves are very nice when people start pointing Lascannons their way.
