There are times when you might feel like fielding triple Dakkafex, but against something with a ton of land-based tanks there's nothing better in the Tyranid list than an angry melee fex (generally of the Ninja variety, since it's so cost-effective).

Fate.Wrathblade wrote:ext carapace on the genestealers, get a broodlord

Extended Carapace is pretty much a total waste of points, since for the same price you can have more bodies and 4+ cover saves are very easy to get. However, for the same price points-wise, you can go Feeder Tendrils with Scuttlers. This combination is very nasty any time you can catch something on the flanks. In the case of the Broodlord and his Retinue, though, it's generally best to give the 'lord Feeder Tendrils and Toxin Sacs, and give each of his retinue members Acid Maw. This lets everyone re-roll hits and your Retinue to re-roll wounds, making this a very nasty thing if you hit combat with it.

However, due to his lack of Fleet, you might find your Broodlord just gets walked away from and shot 'til it's gone. When he and his retinue do get in combat, though, it's beautiful. For you, at least. Your opponent tends to be sad as he picks up models that didn't stand a chance. A single Broodlord is about half the price of a Tyrant to buy, though, assuming you didn't want to run HQ Deathspitter Warriors.

Speaking of Warriors, you might want to magnetize these, as well. 6 Spitter/Talon Warriors are nice overall, but sometimes you might want to run assault variants instead.

Re:Tyanid Assault Brood

One alternative Elite Carnifex that works is a Carnifex with rending claws, Barbed Strangler and Spore Cysts (you'd need a few spare spore mines but they aren't hard to make/buy). It's basically a cheap ass sniper fex that produces anti-infantry spore mines. Because of the warriors you can blow these up at will in synapse range which is amusing.

Your force can likely be turned into as little as a 750pt force with the right build. The gaunts either with spinefists or fleshborers (I prefer the fleshborers myself, higher strength re-roll to wound is fun) as cover for the stealers, maybe scuttlers on the gaunts so you can cover the advancing/flanking stealers. Feeder tendrils on the genestealers or flesh hoks or both are almost an essential these days on the 'stealers. I'd give the warriors Rending Claws, Deathspitters, extended carapaces, flesh hooks and an extra initiative and strength upgarde. Bit expensive for the full unit of 6 but a great all round unit. 3 cheap supporting Fexes either with barbed stranglers or the 2 twin devourers and you're doing solid. 750-1000pts of guys right there depending on the build. Maybe Without Number the gaunts so you get respwaning gaunts but remember to keep the WoN broods smallish so as they are killed to respawn in the late game. Great for recapturing abandoned objectives in your half of the board. You might consider converting one or two of the Warriors into Lictors instead, and with all the genestealers and gaunts scuttling you suddenly have a solid force that can outflank the enemy very reliably thanks to the Lictors special rules, though it leaves the carnifii and the warriors more exposed, so just hug cover and maybe keep a small unit of WoN gaunts shielding the Warriors if you are going down this path.

Auretious Taak.

Alot of people in other threads here have been arguing the virtues of certain biomorphs under 5th and Initiative 2 is not the greatest spend on points due to how many attack backs are likely to be there still, it's debateable. The Carapace isn't really needed, the extra toughness is useful but not as good as another wound in most cases (most heavy weaponry penetrates AP 2, and is at least strength 8), but basically it's usually better to plonk more fexes down for the same cost as one big one - 1 big one with T7, 5 W 2+ sv and regenerate and everything else is still dead more then twice as fast as 3 with basic 2 weapons maybe one cheap biomorph, and still does less damage then 3. It may act as a focal point for your opponents big guns but if it lasts more then a single turn your opponent is either crap and doesn't know how to make a good list, or you are extremely lucky.

Auretious Taak.

aure, your going for quantity over quality
a big fex, with use of propper cover can kill most things, and against armies like marines its designed for termy hunting, since they strike at I1 the fex gets his boost to I2 allowing him to strike 1st, and alot of instant death ensures he get the job done, lets face it, run him up a flank and 60 gaunts up another, which do you shoot? both will take a large ammount of fire to kill, and both can cause serious problems, your opponent is then in a possition to make a very hard decision, either way, something will get stomped.

Re:Tyanid Assault Brood

JD21290,

It all depends on what the opposing army is. If any of the LR heavy lists that more and more MEQ style forces are advocating is anything to go off of then yes, that fex is dead and who cares about all those gaunts that can't actually hurt me inside my shiny tank of awesome. Quality can be done well with 'Nids, but not as well as many other armies out there. Quantity almost always trumps with the 'Nids. 100 termagants backed up by 18 Warriors with Deathspitters will cause a massive dent in anything up one flank. Throw 3-6 carni's up the other and you are really doing well with massed quantity. But 60 Gaunts and 1 fex, we pick the fex off first and then take the gaunts out. The new run rules help much more for closing on the enemy with a Rippy fex but still even 2 Carnifex with a couple extra choice biomorphs work well. Just my opinion and my gamestyle either way.

Auretious Taak.

orchewer wrote:I purposefully left out the Sniperfex....just don't see the Venom Cannon being all that useful compared with another Barbed Strangler.

I'm seeing this alot with players who I don't think realize the nastiness and the intention GW had with the VC and the 5th edition rules. Sure yes the BS can pop a low AV tank. And yes the VC can still only glance. However, the job of the VC IS TO GLANCE, every time. Or close there about. I mean you keep 1 or 2 sniper fex's in the back to allow your running troops the ability to get into CC where they perform their best. GW has done some crazy things with 5th edition but I think their main goal was to make you think and strategize more with the forces that you're using. Sure it can't pop the tank, but it can stop it from moving or shooting your army, which I think we can all agree is almost equally beneficial. Not to mention this also stops the faster Jet Bike armies from kiting our Army to death and allows us the chance to catch up and not get shot to death. This is of course my opinion and experience with my 'Nid's army that's still the process of being org. chart finished and painted. But there's a spot in my Org. Chart for at least 1 Sniperfex to deal with Baneblades, Landraiders, Monoliths, etc and anything else that might cause my other components some issue.
