back to white with Gesso?

Has anyone tried using gesso over black primer to bring small areas back to white so light colors are easier to make stand out?
Was thinking of using it on a few power fists so painting hazard stripes would be easier to get a bold yellow color.
would this work or would the gesso/primer combo cause weird effects, like paint flaking or textures?

Gesso is very thick and I use it as my primer. It shrinks as it dries. I use black gesso primarily. I do recommend thinning it down to avoid clogging details. It also takes longer to dry, typically about 24 hours to set. You can speed this up with a suitable application of heat.
