Modeling with Gaming in Mind and Basing

Hi all,
I'm preparing to begin building a new Blood Angels army from stripped down models, and right now I've got giant gallon-sized bags full or sorted Marine bits, and a bag with scenic basing options. I'm going jump-pack Assault Marine heavy, and was just looking for other people's thoughts on modeling and basing minis with gaming in mind, especially with the new TLOS. I'm not talking about 'that guy' who bases all his models prone to avoid being seen, but more general stuff people could run into... for example, I've got a huge stash of clear flight bases from back when GW sold those separately... and I was considered mounting some jump-marines on them. Now that I've got my 5th Edition rulebook, it seems like any sort of decorative display base like that would only be a disadvantage to me.

I've also got a side question... I've got some old Armorcast metal scenic bases, and they're 30mm, which is a tad bit larger than the GW Small round bases... should I not use these in my army due to the difference in base size with gaming in mind, or would it really not matter?

Stick to 25mm, leave the 30mm for showpiece models later on.

If the army is being built for Gaming, stick to the basics. 25mm bases, leave the flying bases and 30mm at home.

I say, model your guys the way that look the best. You might lose an extra game here or there, but your guys will look better dying.

No one has ever approached me after a game and congratulated me on winning. No one has ever approached one of my opponents and congratulated them for beating me (well, certainly not within earshot). I've both given and and received compliments on how armies look though.

Really, what do you take more pride in, winning all your games, or having an army that looks good and gets compliments?

Thanks for the input guys... the 30mm thing I can see, it's probably just too much of a potential problem... I think when I go to do a Veteran Assault Squad I will use the flight rods on normal 25mm bases or something to that effect to look good and be functional. I do typically go for show and modeling over playing, but I'm hoping to build this new army up with the intent of it getting some use and my finally building up an army for a game and then actually learning to use it properly

Winning is a big part of the game, but then why not play heroclix or whatever else that doesn't require assembly and paint? I think we play this for the modeling. And an assault army that is actually flying would be really cool to see.

Crappy opponents, otherwise.

I'm with you, though... Assemble and paint the models in whatever fashion YOU prefer. Anyone refusing to game with you over small things like 5mm on a base or flyingbases vs. 25mm bases is probably TFG, and better avoided anyway.

A GOOD NATURED ribbing over it, however... that is easily asseptable.
Almost every time I play a game with my buddies, ONE of us picks out (and picks ON) a non-standard based model and "refuses permission" for its' use and demands it removed from the table. the demand is, of course, "rudely' and sternly refused.
If the player with the non-standard model wins, it's (playfully) because of his "Cheating model."
If he loses... it's in SPITE of his cheating.

THAT kind of stuff is okay. Screw anyone else!

Eric

You can get 30mm plastic bases from GF9...really any size, and by the pint!

I'd say go for 30mm. I don't think there's any rule against putting your figs on LARGER bases, only smaller, yes? And if it makes them more scenic or purty, then so much the better. Heck, base 'em on washers. They're your figures, after all.

My AOBR orks are going on Privateer Press/Dark Age style bases (the kind with the beveled edge) 'cause I think they look better. Sometimes it will give me an advantage, sometimes it'll give my opponent an advantage. Whatever. As Redbeard says, it's better to look good than to win good
