Countering terminators with Necrons?

Ignoring your composition for a moment, let's look at tactics.

Starting on turn 2 and beyond, make sure you don't have your units so close together that the termies can assault more than one unit at a time. This will mean once he kills the squad he's attacking, you'll have a full round of shooting to make him wonder why the hell he would deep strike anything into the middle of your army. It may take your whole army to burn them down but if he's putting a ton of points into the termies it'll be worth your time.

Countering terminators with Necrons?

Rather then a single unit, the Necron army should be utilizing their superior mobility (Veil, Monolith, Turboboost) to shift away from the Terminators when they appear and grind them down with sustained long range firepower. You should be able to absorb Terminator shooting, but close combat (especially with power fists) is what will kill you.

If the majority of the opposing army is Deep Striking into your lines, you can deploy with a defensive line of Warriors to deny close drop zones, then collapse the line with a Veil or Monolith teleport once the Terminators appear.

WWWWWWW
WWWWWWW
IIIIIIII LWW
M DDDD WW

This is a fairly standard Necron defensive castle, with Immortals and Destroyers protected on the inside by a line of Warriors. Since Terminators cannot DS into the castle itself, they have to place outside of it.

TTT TTT
WWWWWWW
WWWWWWW
IIIIIIII LWW
M DDDD WW

Assuming a close in drop for close combat next turn (which in itself leaves open the possibility of deep strike mishaps), the Terminators should inflict and suffer minor casualties in shooting.

TTT TTT

IIIIIIII L
M DDDD
WWWW
WWWW

The Monolith sucks in the entire warrior pack (since the Monolith only needs to be next to a single member of the unit) and redeploys them behind itself. The Immortals and Destroyers move straight backwards and continue grinding away at the Terminators.

TTT TTT
IIIIIIII L
M DDDD
WWWW
WWWW

After two turns (or with running if the Marines don't shoot), the Terminators close to next-turn charge range.

TTT TTT
M ---------------------->IIIIIIIL
---------------------->DDDD

WWWW
WWWW

The Lord Veils the Immortals to safety, while the Destroyers turboboost away. The Monolith blocks the most direct route to the Warriors, who continue to fire. Now, the opponent can either collect the Warriors (taking fire from Immortals and Destroyers) or try to catch the Immortals and Destroyers while getting shot by the Warriors.

While Necron shooting is not incredibly effective against Terminators in a single volley, sustained fire over multiple turns will result in the Terminators going down. As long as the Necron player can avoid getting caught in close combat, their durability should win through.

This is a rather simple example, as it only displays a defense against a single-axis attack, but it should give you an idea on how to structure your game plan against Terminators.

Re:Countering terminators with Necrons?

I used to run a Necron army and it also had a great deal of difficulty with Black Templar Terminators.

I changed my army composition and it became not only extremely effective against Terminators, but incredibly powerful against all other armies as well – I added 3 squads of 3 Wraith who I trucked around with a destroyer Lord + resurrection orb + war scythe.

I’d keep my wraiths close to the bulk of my army and waited for the terminators (or any assault unit for that matter) to get close. I’d then smash into them with 27 S 6 I 6 attacks + 4 warscythe attacks from the Lord.

27 attacks vs terminators = 13.5 hits = 11.25 wounds = 1.875 kills
4 warscythe attacks = 2.7 hits = 1.8 wounds = 1.8 kills
For a grand total of 3.675 kills… this doesn’t sound very impressive but most Terminator squads come in squads of 5 so you probably have only 1 or 2 terminators left to deal with which should be EASILY wiped out in your opponents turn of CC. Your I6 and invulnerable save on your Wraiths coupled with your resurrection orb will keep your Wraiths nice and healthy.

I will admit, I have not had the opportunity to try this tactic in 5th ed but I would assume the results would be pretty similar.

I once smashed into a squad of 9 Thousand Sons terminators (that used the OLD chaos codex where they EACH had 2 wounds) – the core of my opponents army – and came away victorious in CC.

Countering terminators with Necrons?

hmm, I havn't played too much with my Necrons in 5th Edition.

Us Necron players don't like Terminators, in fact, we hate them

Make the terminator player go first if you can, this should give you a slight edge when he deep strikes. A tactic I used to use was to make a wall with my 3 monoliths (thus making a physical blockade and cutting out LOS) between my troops and the terminators. You can either stay immobile, or you can kite the terminators if table space allows for it. Your opponent will not like you for this, so prepare for some pretty mean glares etc.

Another tactic would be to swamp the terminators with scarabs, thus making them waste most of the game fighting fearless metallic instecty things you don't care about.

I once had a Necron lord raise himself from the dirt 3 times in a game. If your good at those WBB rolls, a Lord with an Orb and Scythe might be fun to use as a 1 man army.

Countering terminators with Necrons?

Ok, I know exactly what you mean. I learned to play against black templars and black templar terminators always make me lose the game. Just couldnt kill them, and when I did, they moved 18 inches the next turn...but all is not lost, there are a few ways to take out terminators with Necrons. These guys have brought up some good points. Mobility is the key. Stay away from terminators. You can do this using monoliths to summons away (very helpful) Veil of darkness and running if you have to. Also, if you are looking to simply blast the terminators to death, Heavy destroyers are very good anti terminator units and the Nightbringer is great counter charge and he will defeat 10 terminators in CC or get very close. Hope this helps.

Countering terminators with Necrons?

While it can be a dangerous ploy placing a monolith between the terminators and your own squads can essentially eleminate them as a threat. Powerfist strength of 8 can at best glance the monolith, and the extra chainfist dice can't be used against living metal. They can't kill it, they can't go through it, and they can't shoot through it.

Countering terminators with Necrons?

As a BT player that fields a lot of Terminators, I'd say your best bet is to utilize your Jetbike units, Summoning Monoliths, and Veil or Darkness assets in order to deny assault.

When it comes down to it, Terminators (especially BT ones) do their worst work in Assault. In shooting, they're a couple of Tactical Squads at worst -- nothing a Necron army can't handle, what with the MEQ statline and WBB and all. However, with 5th Edition's new Combat Resolution, Warrior/Scarab tarpits fail, and anything other than the Nightbringer folds like a house of cards against multitudinous Fist attacks.

Field Monoliths and Warriors/Immortals for a base, backed up by Scarabs (sheer number of attacks can slow their advance) or by Destroyers. The Lord should be there as Veil backup. Barring that, I'd say getting the Nightbringer or Deceiver as an Assault deterrent is your best bet. Expect them to be shot to pieces, however -- if there's one thing my regular Necron opponent has learned, it's that the C'Tan manage to attract unwanted firepower, essentially making them expensive fire magnets and nothing more.

Good luck. Hope that helps.

CK

Countering terminators with Necrons?

Darth:

What's your strategy (army composition, game play for each mission)? If we know that, then we can suggest a specific tactic to help you take out the Terminators, or suggest a strategic change if your strategy is vulnerable to Terminators.

Incidentally I really like this thread. Usually threads in the Tactics forum bog down in strategy, and usually just list-building at that. Maybe it'll start a trend!
