What to shoot at?

To be honest I always don't know what to shoot at or what every unit exactly does or why it is dangerous to what. So lets use this thread to post the common units that are dangerous from each codex, what they are dangerous for, and why they are dangerous. I'll start with the only codex I really know well
CSM:
Demon Prince: Can be very mobile, with game altering powers like Lash of Submission and Warp time. Can assault vehicles to death. Can assault most things to death or just set them up for devastating blows with Lash of Submission.
Sorcerer of Chaos: Lash sorcerers are once again dangerous because of their ability to move your things around with Lash. They are also very good because of their ability to hide in squads to protect them from enemy fire.
Plague Marines: Not seriously dangerous in their own right but they definitely will keep you form claiming some objectives. Some of the best troops in the game.
Berzerkers: Dangerous in assault, will rip apart many other troops on objectives on the charge.
Noise Marines: Incredibly shooty. If they have you in range one shooting phase and you don't move away they will destroy you in the next one using their heavy settings to lay down a lot of fire power.
Oblits: Very dangerous to anything on the table. Very resilient with their 2+ saves as well. Mostly shoot vehicles to death with lascannons and shoot infantry to death with plasma cannons. Usually that happens after a unit has been bunched up by Lash of Submission.

Those are the most prevelant units from CSM. Feel free to add some or do mine over if you feel they aren't correct. Lets get going!

What to shoot at?

Honestly I think its more so based on what army you use. When I am fielding my IG my #1 target is mele squads with a close #2 of blast weapons.

When I field SM with Land Raiders, my #1 target is his/her AT weapons/IC's that can breach my armor.

I think its based off of what your army can do and ITS weekness moreso than what your opponents army can field.

But going along your lines heres my analysis of what would beat my armies.

IG: #1 - Command squads. You kill my Ld boosting squads and you can pretty much say good night. With att the deep striking in 5th I would NEVER stand up to an assault with their base leadership. #2 - My mortars. I generally use as many of them as I can because indirect fire negates cover saves (as they do not need LOS) and I gran a TON of cover saves with a static gun line.

SM: #1 table coverage. I LIKE deep strike...but you can't do this within so many inches of an enemy unit and I am not crazy/gutsy enough to try and drop close to a table edge. #2 You have lots of AT. Land Raiders are uber tough, but you hit them enough they will break. And if your fielding 2 or even 3 than thats ALOT of points wrapped up in them.

Just my 2 cents...Please correct me if I am wrong as I have yet to play my IG in 5th and only a handful of MEQ games....been WAY too busy this year.

I think the question is just too open ended. You did somewhat narrow it down by saying "what's dangerous from each Codex," but even that can vary a great deal based on mission and what you're playing.

The most dangerous unit is the one that can do the most to win the game for your opponent at each turn. It could be a loaded Hive Tyrant smashing into your lines, or it could be a single Fire Warrior sitting alone on the deciding objective.

I don't think a single firewarrior is dangerous but a fire warrior squad inside a Tau transport sitting on an objective might be a common and dangerous thing in tau lists to claim objectives.

What to shoot at?

I see his point though Typeline. As any troop's no matter how small are now scoring this is a VERY dangerous piece as it can cost you the game if you can not contest the objective.

I think what he is saying is that its all relative to what situation you find yourself in.

What to shoot at?

Always keep the mission in mind. Elminate the units most likely to thwart your mission or complete his mission. This often means that you shoot troops before shooting heavy/elite. If the enemy has no troops left in an objective game he will have to table your entire army in order to win.

What to shoot at?

burb paraphrases me accurately.

What I'm saying, is that while some models are a huge threat (say Abbadon), it's ultimately a matter of winning the objectives of the mission.

If it's turn 6, there's one Chaos Marine sitting on a game winning objective, and Abbadon is bearing down on your shooty squad, even though it probably won't sit well with the squad doing the shooting, they need to kill that last Marine and then let Abbadon munch their faces.

Yes, you could be giving up a 200 point squad for a single 14 point Chaos Marine. But if you win, that's not really an issue, is it?
