Black Primer

Ok dakkaites....I did it. I finally used up the last of my Citadel Black Primer stock...I ran up to my FLGS and they only have the "new" black paint that is NOT a primer...so my shinny new scout bikes are sitting in a vat of Simple Green right now as we speak. Its not that its too thick, well yeah..yeah it is.

So, what primer do you guys use? Available in the US? and Where? I need a GOOD matte black primer that will not hide detail. Help?

Black Primer

I prefer grey primers and use Tamiya's spray primers (amazing smooth and thin, but costly) and have had good luck with standard Krylon or Rustoleum grey Auto Primer applied in thin cotes... IMO the only time I ever found GW Primer very good or useful was the Bleached Bone primer, which also sadly no longer exists.

Sandable auto primer. 3$ a can. Wal-Mart. Made of win and awesome. I've had 2 cans of GW primer clog inside the bottle on me. No more 150% mark up for me. All I use now. Just have something with a humidity gauge on it near by. Has to be pretty dry or it will fuzz. Just make sure it hasn't rained yesterday, today, or is going to tomorrow. Basic rule I've been using. Also no night priming.

Black Primer

K here's the trick BURB.. because I ran into the same problem. I needed primer so I purchased what they had.. WHITE.

.. I always prime black... automotive primers, krylon, rustoleum... they are 90% high build formulas for general purpose. So if you like detail, I wouldnt use them..

what I do is dust the white primer on so paint can grab.. should be able to see through it all. Then coat several times with a 1:1 water/chaos black till uniform.

I have an airbrush and that speeds up the process 300000% when doing 30+ minis.

Hope that helps... and by all means if Duplicolor, Krylon, or any other paints does it for you... to each his own...

But I recommend spraying a test model, or several, so find out which technique works best for YOU.

Reaper has a brush-on white primer in the Reaper Master Series, although you don't get much for what you pay for. I've used it with fair success. Just remember that it goes on fairly thin, but you don't need to lay it on thick for it to work well.
