Purple Space Marines! Wowzers!

Ok. So, I started playing 40k about a month ago when I bought AOBR. So, in an attempt to be different, I painted my first squad purple.

Sorry about the blurriness. And the spellang.
Should have more pics... soon.

This is my first go at painting, and I could use some help. Feel free to leave any comments about it. I haven't got any ideas about themes or chapter names, so those are welcome as well. Basically anything you have to say about the color scheme/ paint job.

I like the purple and how you are even putting some highlights on your first model but not sure I like the bright red with the purple. I just think a yellow or gold would go better.

White is hard to get a solid look to without slathering on thick layers but yeah multiple slightly watered down layers would look far superior.

Keep up the good work

Is that seriously your second painted model?

If so, that's incredible.

Looks like you're drying out your brush quite a bit. If you want a drybrushed look, that's fine, but (since I assume that you're watering down your paints now. Don't go overboard with the water, by the way) try dabbing your paintbrushes only once on a paper towel. Keep the brush slightly wet, and see how you like it. Also, it looks like you're only using three colors. Try blending a new color between each of them at a 1:1 ratio and paint them in order (should make six different shades). It'll take longer, but look much better, especially with a non-drybrush technique.

I can tell you're well on your way to being a great painter.

On a different note, Purple and Gold = Soul Drinkers. So I'm glad you didn't go there. The purple with one bright red shoulderpad actually looks good anyway. I also like how you're not bothering to use metallics (I've always felt that flake paint looks wrong in most instances). Right on.

As for Chapter Names and such, I'll try and think of something.

Still, very impressive.

I remember my first squad of Black Legion from back in the day. Even your first model mops the floor with them (Hell, I painted the gold details with a friggin toothpick!)

Re:Purple Space Marines! Wowzers!

Hm......I want to help here but I'm not sure where to start since they really don't look bad at all for a beginner.

Red and purple are not the greatest contrast but I like the white with the purple. That is supposed to be reserved for veterans I guess though.

I guess the first thing I'd work on is getting your highlights neater. They look kind of slopped on in certain parts. Your final highlight color should be very thin. When possible, use the side of your brush when doing those rather than the point, it should give you more control.

Here's an easy way to make your armor look a little more worn and old.....paint some sharp little patches of black on certain parts. Inside the black, paint some Boltgun Metal or an equivalent, making the paint look chipped. The black is like an outline. If you do that, try to put these spots where you think paint would most naturally be worn off on something.

Re:Purple Space Marines! Wowzers!

Not bad at all!

I've painted quite a few purple marines in my day, and I've found that the color selection is key to getting them to look nice, as it will give the look that you are trying to get with the contrast in the model itself.

My guys were the Hawk Lords (not those stupid Soul-Drinker copy-cats), so purple and gold were my main colors. However, the base purple was the same as what you are trying to do. I found that you could get a really nice purple pretty simply with a black undercoat, a thin layer of warlock purple (GW paint I think, it's a dark purple, but I might have the liche & warlock switched around), a thin layer of purple ink, and then another thin layer of warlock purple and liche purple (I think). Now you have a great base to start with. Highlight with 25%/75% warlock/liche, and then finish with full liche purple highlights. The dark purple was the first one, of course. I think this could help you because it lets you get the consistant overall coverage that you are looking for, and then work on the detailing for your models.

I would reconsider the red on the arm, though. I've found lighter colors (bleached bone, gold, silver, and even some light greys) work really well with the dark purple. Red, being in the same color family as purple, doesn't work quite as well. It's your models, but I think you could make huge steps by simplifying your base color even more, and then really working on your detailing.

But, you have some nice models for only 10 painted!
