LotR models ARE 100% legal for tournament play within the other 2 systems, and vice versa. They are also legal for use in GW stores in any games. My local GW had a converted Balrog with Dragon wings prominently on display in its front window for many months earlier this year.

The only remaining restriction based on the license is that if you win "Best Army" they cannot publish a photograph of converted LotR models in WD! New Line couldn't care less what you do with your models once you have bought them. But they do not want their own IP "co-mingled" with GW's as it could be in a photograph and particularly in a conversion.

It used to be the case originally that GW frowned on mixed conversions, but it was never part of the licence agreement, merely GW's attempt to prevent people using cheaper LotR models in WFB. This latter point has been confirmed by several different former employees I have spoken to.

Apologies. When I last entered a 40K tournament, LOTR models and conversions weren't allowed, but then that was last year. If this has indeed changed, then by all means unleash those Riders of Rohan against Space Marines, Orks, Tau and the like

Using Models from Our Other Ranges
Please note that at this time, due to the nature of our licenses, The Lord of the
Rings Strategy Battle Game armies that feature models or model components
from our Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000 ranges cannot be nominated for
the Best Army Award. If any of the other awards are won using an army
containing models from our Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000 ranges, the
army unfortunately cannot be photographed or featured on the Web or in any
Games Workshop publication.
