Think about the theme of your army and see if you can't come up with a paint scheme based on that. If you're going 'generic', or just want to be able to pull different clan ideas together (lootas and kommandos, for example), try some really military colors: grays, greens, drabs, etc. Or, base it on terrain. Are they going to be cityfighting orks? dessert warriors? fighting in arctic conditions?

Also: try to find the old 2nd ed. book (or Freebooterz!) or a copy of Rogue Trader: lots of good ideas in those.
