How do Ork Bigbomms work?

I've done a quick search to see if anyone has asked this before...I'm baffled (as are others)
Does it count as shooting a weapon, is it fired/released in the shooting phase or before, does it matter?

I have 5 deffcoptas (I have 9 but only doing 5 for now) about to be modelled (I’ll spru build crates marked TNT (in an ACME way) for those who get bigbomms.)
Using deffcoptas is it possible that the following situations can arise legally?;

A) A unit of 5 with 4 bigbomms flies over a squad in movement phase, and drops all 4 of its big bomms on that unit.

B) A unit of 5 with 4 flies over 2 units in its movement phase and drops 2 on the first thing it flew over and 2 on the second thing it flew over.

C) (progression of B) a unit with 4 big bomms flies over unit (1) drops bomms, then in shooting phase shoots unit (2) and assaults unit (2) Does it make any difference if the scenario changes to only 3 drop bombs and the remainder shoots (2)?

D)A unit of 5 that has 4, turboboosts and drops its bombs
(2)A unit of 5 that has 4 turboboosts in a scout move and then says it dropped bombs

(p48 of ork codex)I'm up for both RAW and how it "should be" answers.(for those who look outside RAW for answers the cost of 5 deffcoptas with 2 buzzsaws and 4 bigbomms comes in at around 285pts or 8 and a bit Kanz )

My answers as I see em (but I'm a relative noob with orksies)
A) yes,legal
B) yes
C) depends on what a "special attack" means ,it doesn't say it counts as shooting (doesn't say "in lieu of shooting" etc)and it implies (to me) it is released during the movement phase- it can be dropped even if you turbo boost (which stops the ability of shooting normally p76 Big (red?) book )) this is the most likely one to come up in game (as in my current list I'm only using 1 bomm for early on as they sweep in) Love to hear your views and comparisons to other things that may, or may not, happen outside the shooting phase,or just perform additonal attacks too shooting.
D) yes RAW stipulated (2) No scout move isn't movement phase.

So how close did I get?
Thanks for any replies
KMB

Far as I can tell the special attack is per model and not dependent on anything except having moved over the target in your movement phase. It's not shooting or mentioned as disallowing anything else.

I think your close KMB. I too am looking for definitive and 'official' answers. I play up to 15 Koptas and use boms and saws. I am running them as you mention in your 'best guess'. I have not used them without turbo-boosting yet. I assume if you boost no shooting is allowed except the BOMM anyway. Im addicted to the +3 cover save so I always boost on first attack where i use the BOMMz lol.. There is also and interpretation of the rules that say only 1 attach per game - which sound like only one Bomm can be dropped, but i dont play that way..

Lancelot_64 wrote:I think your close KMB. I too am looking for definitive and 'official' answers.

There is no 'official' answer from GW, so you're left to the RAW which are woefully under-written in this particular case.

The question isn't whether or not Big Bomms are a shooting attack (they aren't since they are never described as being one and they occur in the movement phase). The real questions are how are all the ones dealing with a non-shooting 'special attack'. How are casualties caused, like shooting? Do units get cover saves from the Blast and if so, how is it determined if the unit is in cover or not from the attack? How are vehicles affected by the blast (where is armor facing determined from), etc, etc, etc.

In the INAT FAQ we went ahead and made ruling to treat the attack like a barrage weapon for determining armor facings and cover for the target. But this is a 'working' solution based on a need for some sort of answer, rather than anything backed up by the rules.

But as for the questions from the OP:

A) Yes it is legal (why would it not be?).
B) Yes, as they are not shooting attacks the only restriction on dropping them is on a model you moved over.
C) Yes, it does not matter where the bombs are dropped as they are not shooting attacks it does not affect who the unit shoots at or assaults in the subsequent phases.
D) This is the only one you 'got wrong'. A unit which turbo-boosts can take 'no voluntary actions' on the turn it Turbo-boosts and dropping a big bomm is certainly voluntary and therefore you can't do it.

On D, the big-bomms say that you may use them even if you've turbo-boosted. Specific>General.

@OP: No, I don't believe you can use them in the scout "move" because it is not a movement phase.

Also, I believe the "1 attack per game" restriction should be per Bomm (in practical terms, per model with the upgrade). They should be free to drop the bomms over different turns, provided you drop no more throughout the game than 1 per model with the upgrade. They should also be free to drop multiple bomms in a single turn.
